When Paid Airport WiFi Goes Too Far
Did you know that Düsseldorf International Airport is Germany's third largest airport, after Frankfurt and Munich? It even beats Berlin (for now)! Did you maybe also know that the New York area has a direct flight to Düsseldorf, from Newark-Liberty, on Lufthansa? Well, they do and we just hopped off of it less less than 12 hours ago.
This isn't our first time through DUS, but it is the first time we've bothered at all to log into the airport's WiFi, run by Vodafone. Warning: it isn't free. Warning part deux: it's the opposite of freeit's pretty expensive!
Yes, this is Europe and there's extra little charges to be found on everything, but Düsseldorf fancies itself a forward-thinking airport and its key traveling demographic is the on-the-go businessmen who need to be connected whenever/wherever possible. Perhaps this is why Vodafone believe it can squeeze 5.95 EUR ($7.50) out of travelers for just 30 minutes of WiFi use.

DFW Teams Up with AT&T for Free Airport WiFi, Finally
With in-flight WiFi gaining popularity, the importance of WiFi in the terminal isn’t exactly quite the necessity it once was. Nonetheless, that hardly means that we’re going to pass up some free terminal-wide WiFi, especially in a pretty big airport. Thankfully, Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport is the latest airport to flip the WiFi switch from costly to complimentary, and it's going to be accessible to travelers throughout the terminals, concourses, and even the parking garages. We’re just kind of curious if you can pick up a signal up in the airport’s Skylink train.
Airport officials at DFW are teaming up with everyone’s favorite mobile technology carrier—kidding—AT&T to offer up the free WiFi to the masses. It sounds like the behind-the-scenes work is already underway, and that things should be good to go as soon as September. Unfortunately there’s a bit of a catch—of course there is—as you’ll need to watch a 30-second commercial before signing into the service for the first time.

Rome's Fiumicino Airport Is Not The Easiest Place to Spend the Night

There are some good things about Rome's Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. It's has some very pretty diplays, for instance, and there are rotating exhibits showcasing Italy's history that are kind of interesting.
But there are also some unpleasant things about FCO. It's the international HQ of Alitalia for instance, and the service is predictably chaotic. It is not unheard of to see the entire Alitalia customer service desk staffed by a single person during the height of morning rush hour. That's not a problem though, because when Italians complain about customer service they do so quickly and efficiently, without any extravagant hand waving or embellishment (no, not really). Also the security sucks. Also it's a pain to get to. Also it's one of the world's worst airports for spending the night. And we thought Budapest was bad.

A Connected Traveler's Dream: Rows Upon Rows of Shiny Plugs at JFK

If you're on the All-You-Can-Jet JetBlue pass like several of the Jaunted staff (disclosure: who totally all paid in full for their own), you'll undoubtedly end up making a connection through JFK this season. Even if you're not on a pass, but will probably find yourself moving through New York, it behooves you to know about this row of plugs and computers, in the back of the terminal between gates 23 and 24. Thanks to new airline regulations, after all, you might find yourself spending quite a bit of time here if you spend any time at all.
Rows like this one, which are bathed in JetBlue's free and fast WiFi, are actually found in several places throughout JetBlue's T5 terminal. There are two just on this side of the structure, along the row of gates here. This one is placed far enough back, though, that it almost always has empty seats. Plus if you squint your eyes toward the back, and focus on that small Samsung charging station, you can just make out the bar that's directly behind it. By virtue of also being in the back of the terminal, is also often deserted. Useful!
So don't be afraid of moving through the whole terminal before posting up and plugging in. It's not like the pace of flights leaving JFK is exactly overwhelming, so you should have plenty of time to make it back to your gate from just about anywhere in T5.

In Pursuit of Free WiFi, an Outlet, and a Cushioned Bench at Budapest Airport

There are three things we care about in airports, alcohol obviously excepted. They are, in genuinely no particular order: a working electrical outlet, free airport wifi, and a comfortable chair. At any given time in Budapest's terminal 2B¡the half of the international terminal that serves EU countriesyou can get two out of the three. Never all three. Sometimes only one. Usually two out of three. But never all three.
We were actually pretty psyched to roll into the airport recently, where Jaunted's Airport WiFi Map correctly promised we would get free wireless. It turns out that using the wireless can be a challenge because the signal is sometimes uneven inside the terminal and, of course, because computer batteries only last so long. The root of the problem lies in BUD's decor, which is this kind of haphazard and postmodern "maybe we'll put cushions on our uncomfortable metal benches and maybe we won't" arrangement.
Benches are molded four seats at a time, with accompanying green cushions glued in - or not - in seemingly random order. Where there are no cushions the seats are painfully uncomfortable. When there are cushions there are almost never four in a row, which makes using the benches as makeshift overnight beds impossible. Take a look:

Google Gives The Greatest Gift Of All: Free Airport WiFi Over The Holidays
Flying for the holidays and intrigued by the possible availability of free In-Flight WiFI? How about free WiFi in airports as well?
You may be entitled to a Christmas, Hannukah or Kwanzaa gift, compliments of Google. The multi-billion dollar corporation is bucking up and plans to help soften the blow of flight delays this holiday season by offering free wifi at select airports all over the country. This promotion begins November 17 and will run through January 15, 2010 at 47 airports nationwide. Some of the airports that will offer free wifi with your delays include Miami, Las Vegas, Houston, Boston, Seattle, and even little terminals like Toledo and Central Wisconsin.
Unfortunately, this "B-list" of airports excludes "A-list" hubs like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Dallas. Either way, we are thankful for any freebies this holiday season. For the complete list of airports, check out Google's cute little holiday WiFi website here.

Google And Microsoft Battling To See Who Can Provide More Free Holiday WiFi

When the tech world's two major borgs square off for travelers' time and attention, that can only be good news for the rest of us. Google had already arranged for free WiFi on Virgin America flights andas of this morningthey're also giving it away at more than 40 airports across the country. But that's small time compared to the deal Microsoft just struck to promote their search engine Bing.
Bing has worked out an arrangement with WiFi provider JiWire which will allow users to get free Internet in exchange for doing just one search on Bing. This is a campaign that will reach all of JiWire's hotspots which, more or less, amounts to just about everywhere:
