Alaska Airlines Flight Attendants are Sick of (and Sick by) Their New Uniforms
When flight attendants score some new uniforms—or some new shoes—we are usually all excited about it. However, this is unfortunately not the case with Alaska Airlines and the new shirts, pants, and skirts they’ve been passing out to those who work the aisles high in the sky.
The new uniforms have been kicking around since 2011, but ever since their release there have ben some interesting comments regarding the level of comfort they provide. Apparently flight attendants have been a little itchy, scratchy, and generally rash-y after receiving these new company issued clothes. The Association of Flight Attendants, which represents plenty of the airline’s crewmembers, is now speaking out as well, as they’re thinking that these new threads are responsible for hair loss and other not too great allergic reactions.

Asiana Airlines Flight Attendants Fight for the Right to Wear Pants
Let them wear pants! Asiana Airlines female cabin crew have spoken out against employer regulations mandating them to wear skirts while working. The flight attendants, with help from their union, have proposed to executives to offer more uniform options beyond just knee length skirts.
Asiana has fought back by saying the uniform was based on traditional Korean dress called a hanbok and women didn't wear pants with this dress. For those that don't know what a hanbok looks like, it is a high-waisted dress, so it makes sense that women wouldn't wear pants. Asiana has no plans to change the uniforms rules in the future. Alas, the desire for a change doesn't stop at just the skirts.

Red Shoe Diaries: Five Pairs of Pumps that Steal the Virgin Atlantic Sex Appeal
It was this time last year that Virgin Atlantic announced that they'd be re-shoeing their girls in the skies with patent red heels.
Flying Virgin to London last summer, we still spied the black shoes boarding flights. Entering the new JFK Clubhouse last week however, we chatted with a few flight attendants who showed a little leg, angled their heels to catch the light, and said that, yes, they'd finally gotten the scarlet kicks. Are they being hit on more? "Yes, absolutely! The compliments come from everyone and the shoes are an easy target, plus they are hot," says one FA.
Agreed, but since the Virgin Atlantic pumps aren't available for purchase, we set out to find Five Shoes to Steal that Virgin Sex Appeal:

Airline Uniforms are Keeping the Faith
For airlines that fly internationally, cultural sensitivity is occasionally part of employee training. We have already talked about Alaska Airlines eliminating prayer cards from their first class meal trays. While the Alaskan carrier abandoned the in-flight faith, other airlines have gone the next step to ensure a religious vacuum while flying on their birds.
The Polish flag-carrier, LOT, may be added to the list of airlines that walk the fine line of being politically correct while upholding consistent uniform guidelines. The airline has been involved in quite a firestorm recently by banning cabin crew from wearing religious symbols that are visible to passengers. After much debate in the deeply religious nation, the carrier decided to renege on their decision and maintain original policy.

Scoot Unveils Cabin Crew Uniform, One Step Closer to Flying
One of the most exciting low-cost carriers to come out of Singapore has taken one step closer to hitting the skies. Last week our friends over at Scoot announced the frocks their cabin crew will be sporting on their inaugural flight. As expected, the companies signature golden yellow is a feature color to make the livery part of the cabin.
Black and yellow color blocking, females get a smart shift dress with a v-neck. Properly fitting and casual is the name of the game for the ladies walking the aisles. The dress is accented with the Scoot logo on the front left side. The ladies will turn heads, à la Pan Am, when walking through the airport for their Sydney launch in June.

Cathay Pacific's New Star Trek-Like Uniforms Start Flying Today
We know, we know. We're geeks about many things airline-related, but we really truly have a soft spot for Flight Attendant fashion. The latest new styles to hit both sorts of runways are those from Hong Kong's airline Cathay Pacific, which we were fortunate enough to inspect firsthand at Cathay's awesome world headquarters back in December.
At the time, Cathay's fresh-faced crews were just seeing the new designs for the first times themselves, and being fitted for their own duds. Well, todays is the day; today the new Cathay crew uniforms take to the skies.
To an infrequent Cathay flyer, the changes may not be so noticeable, trust us that these are so much more chic, in addition to slightly resembling something someone could wear in an episode of Star Trek.

Virgin Atlantic Flight Attendants to Strut the Aisles in New Red Shoes
When you think of flight attendant shoes, you don't exactly think sexy, do you? FAs are on their feet more than we can even imagine, trucking their luggage through airport after airport, on moving walkway after moving walkways and up and down airplane aisles for hours on end. Somehow, through most of this, the women manage to wear their heels.
Virgin Atlantic, whose flight attendants are easily spotted in airport thanks to their sharp red uniforms, are switching it up. The uniform by John Rocha, first introduced almost 10 years ago, is swapping the black shoes for a sexier red patent. The reason? Apparently their new ad campaign and commercial, which features red shoes on the FAs, has been so successful that now the public expects the higher level of glam.
Of course this will freshen up the uniform until they can get new ones, a change expected to occur in three years. Mark it on your calendars.

The Video That Pissed Off Qantas Flight Crew, Starring John Travolta
SCROLL DOWN in above window FOR VIDEO (automatically starts)
What do you call a whole bunch of lions? A pride. What about a group of barracuda fish? A battery, which sounds like it has awesome band name potential ("The Barracuda Battery!"). So then what is the proper term for a plane-ful of flight attendants and other airline staff? A crew, if you know what's good for ya.
According to the Telegraph, some in-flight crew over at Australia's Qantas are pissed at John Travolta for calling them a "team" in a new in-flight safety video. Travolta, who owns a vintage Qantas Boeing 707 and is an official (though special flights-only) pilot with the airline, appeared in the video (shown above) to get passengers' attention for the safety demo. !

Sharp, Subtly Sexy, and Red All Over: Cathay Pacific's New Flight Attendant Uniforms
How many airlines can you name whose flight attendants wear red uniforms? Probably more than you can count on one hand, right? Redwhich stands for desire, luck, happiness, health and extroversionis more than a popular, strong color choice, so it shouldn't be a surprise then that Cathay Pacific stuck with it for their new collection of uniforms, unveiled last night, along with the redesigned biz class seats, in Hong Kong.
We were there of course, because we're not about to turn down a chance to check out in-flight fashion from the moment it debuts. The new uniformswhich are for both male and female crew, from flight attendants on up to managers (but not pilots)are designed by Hong Kong-born and bred Eddie Lau. His specialties lie more in the couture department, but he's been doing the Cathay uniforms since 1999, so hopefully he's got the whole fire retardant, high performance thing down as well.

Flight Attendant Fashion: Pink Uniforms Through History
Big things are happening over at Air New Zealand, because along with the introduction of a new fleet of 777-300s coming in 2011, they'll be freshening up the flight attendant fashion with new looks from Kiwi designer Trelise Cooper.
Those are the proposed designs aboveflight attendant, manager, ground staffand even though we think them quite chic and flattering, others are taking special offense at the pink dress, calling it a "Barbie uniform." Although pink isn't exactly an ideal color for everyone's complexions (nor for spending 8+ hours a day in), it could be a lot worse, as demonstrated by the history of flight attendant fashion.
Also: we'd like to call your attention to the fact that the pink color in the picture is totally photoshopped in! They did a quick job of photoshopping the color, and you can tell that the original design was the green of the blouse in the ground staff outfit. But we digress.
After the jump, we take a look at pink airline uniforms throughout history...

With Korean Air, Flight Attendants Fly Fashionably
Looks like a few of you must have noticed how pretty the flight attendant uniforms were for Korean Air because all of you guessed correctly which airline these stylish flight attendants worked for.
The uniforms were introduced in 2005 and let's just say they were badly needed. Korean Air keeps an entire Uniform Fashion History on their website and the ones worn from 1991-2004 were well, so very early 90s with a few leftovers from the late 80s.
But today's uniforms, envisioned by Italian designer Gianfranco Ferre, feature a choice of either skirt or pants in consideration with the FA's "active cabin duties." Here's how Korean Air describes their stylistic goal:
During the development of this attire, the largest emphasis was placed on attaining harmony between modern global fashion appeal with a foundation of Korea's traditional and inherent beauty. While elegant and refined, the uniform is also comfortable, distinguished by its ergonomic design and the use of practical and supple fabrics.
We mostly just love the pretty blue color that they use, which was actually incorporated into the uniforms of 1973. Now, where can we buy these outfits for ourselves?

United Will Hit The Runway In 2011 With Cynthia Rowley-Designed Uniforms
It's amazing what you can learn on Twitter on a Friday afternoon, namely that United Airlines is all in a tizzy today over the announcement that a new look is coming for their flight attendants: uniforms by fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. Already, the Chicago Tribune is on the case, discovering that the redesign is the "first time in recent history that United has tapped a well-known designer for the job."
We're not so surprised however; Cynthia Rowley is a Chicago native, and United is not only based in Chicago, but calls the Willis (née Sears) Tower home. The new uniforms won't come until Rowley completes her trip to visit United employees in Chicago, LA, New York and London to ask them for their opinions. And although Rowley is known for her ready-to-wear designs for women, the United designs will cover all bases, literally: "The uniforms will be designed for flight attendants, pilots, customer service representatives and maintenance employees."
