January 3, 2012 at 12:28 PM | by | Comments (0)

Now that the winter holidays are over, airlines have rolled out massive fare sales for travel that, in some cases, goes all the way through the end of spring.

There's 6 sales we think are worthy today. 5 are from the US, and one is from the UK. GET ON IT:

'From JFK, on the Beach the Same Day': Hawaiian Airlines to Fly Direct from NYC to Hawaii

November 16, 2011 at 3:39 PM | by | Comments (2)

212 and 808. Respectively, they are the area codes for dialing New York City and Hawaii. Today, however, they are also the prices for a one-way economy or first class seat on Hawaiian Airlines' just announced direct flights from New York-JFK to Honolulu starting in June 2012.

That's right. $212. To Hawaii. Non-Stop. With complimentary in-flight meals, pillows and blankets. That's all great and good, but the problem is these sale fares are going fast. Already we're seeing them raise to the $300s as planes fill for—believe it or not—autumn 2012. It just goes to show how needed this route is, since United née Continental is the only other airline making the 10-hour, 5,000-mile trek (and they dumped their free in-flight meal and other niceties almost one year ago).

The details: flights will be on an Airbus A330-200, with 18 first class seats and 276 economy (32" seat pitch in econ). Book 'em, Danno.

For a better perspective on how the new Hawaiian flights will go down, we met with the airline's CEO Mark Dunkerley this morning, mere hours after even airline crew found out they'd soon be flying to NYC.

Leave Today! Business Class to Paris for Under $800 on OpenSkies

October 10, 2011 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you’re looking to get away this month, how about Paris? The only downer is that you’ll have to settle for business class—we know—that does sound like roughing it.

All-business-class carrier OpenSkies is pulling out of the Washington, DC area at the end of October, so that means they’re selling the last available seats for quite a deal. You’ll have to fly this month, and you’ll need to go between Washington-Dulles and Paris-Orly. However, if you can swing the dates and the destinations there might be flights available for as low as $750 roundtrip—and that includes taxes!

Spirit Airlines Celebrates FAA Shutdown, Wants Congress to Eliminate Taxes or Something

July 27, 2011 at 3:31 PM | by | Comment (1)

On Monday we flagged for you the unofficial airfare tax holiday that the United States is currently "enjoying," courtesy of Washington DC being the most insanely dysfunctional place on the planet.

Without getting into too many details: House Republicans told Senate Democrats that they would only fund the FAA if three powerful Senate Democrats gave up on something called the Essential Air Service, which is a program that sends a bunch of money to (ironically) totally inessential rural airports in those Senators' states. Everyone from liberal journalists to travel bloggers agree that the subsidies are totally unjustifiable, so this was partly an attempt to embarrass the Democrats. The Republicans basically said "there's no way you guys are shameless enough to hold up FAA funding just to keep sending obviously wasteful pork to tiny airports in your states," to which the Democrats responded "actually, we're exactly that shameless." And that's why there are no airfare taxes right now, because FAA doesn't have enough money to collect money.

The sad thing is that we don't have the space to dwell on that insanity, because of course Spirit Airlines looked at both sides of the political aisle and said "you want to see shameless... we'll show you shameless."

Save Some Money on Airfares Since Congress Can't Get Its Act Together

July 25, 2011 at 8:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

The government’s general ineptitude might just be your ticket to cheaper airfare, but you’ve got to act quickly. Due to the budget battle over the FAA in Washington, DC it seems that certain airfare and travel taxes are now optional—and that means that you might be able to save a few bucks on your next airfare purchase.

The unofficial “sale” started over the weekend, but it seems a few airlines still might be passing along the savings. Initially there were several airlines where you could save a few bucks—including United and Delta—but at this point it looks like Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and Frontier might be the only ones left. Other carriers—we’re looking at you American and US Airways—bumped their fares to make up the difference right from the beginning, so in reality they’re just charging for the tax as part of their fare and pocketing it.

No JetBlue All-You-Can-Jet Pass for 2011, You Say? Do a DIY AYCJ!

June 21, 2011 at 2:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Jaunted HQ flag flies at half-mast today since yesterday, when JetBlue revealed they'd not be bringing back the popular All-You-Can-Jet Pass for 2011. This shocked some of the country's (and world's) dedicated budget travelers and they collectively cried a single tear, erased penciled-in plans for fall, and commiserated on Twitter. @Andrewhyde's remark on Twitter yesterday even made a Top Tweet: "All You Can Jet was the most innovative thing out of the airline industry since trying to be profitable."

Although we're still holding the hope that the AYCJ Pass will return in some form in the future*, for now there are ways to get your travel on and do a sort-of DIY AYCJ:

· Follow @JetBlueCheeps
All former AYCJ-ers should already know this, but JetBlue's deals twitter churns out awesome last-minute fares nearly every Tuesday. Since we know some flyers used their AYCJ passes to travel each weekend and still work somewhat normally, Cheeps are for you. Best of all, you don't have to plan much ahead. Last week, Cheeps had $29 from Las Vegas to Long Beach or $69 from JFK to West Palm Beach. Not too shabby.

You Can't Be Serious with This Charlie Sheen Stuff, Spirit Airlines

March 4, 2011 at 1:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

Well here's a surprise! Spirit Air is having one of their "sales," and they've borrowed a few of Charlie Sheen's recent catchphrases to boost the sale's meme cache. That's right—"Tiger Blood,""Adonis DNA" and "Winning" all appear in a flash ad on Spirit's website, advertising fares as low as $27*

It's the "Living the Dream" sale, and we're starting the countdown egg timer until Sheen has his people drafting the papers to sue Spirit's people. Sure, the catchphrases Charlie has been slinging on Twitter are now copied over and over for a variety of uses, but this one seems particularly egregious. Exploiting a celeb's mental health in order to convince budget-seekers to hope onboard your flights? Not cool—especially considering this isn't a real sale.

The $27 price is each way, based on roundtrip purchase, and does not include taxes, fees and the mandatory checked and carry-on baggage fees levied by Spirit. Remember they are currently the only US airline to charge for both types of luggage! Sheen only travels by private jet lately, so at he's smart enough to avoid Spirit.

Virgin America's Groupon Deal Did So Well, They've Brought It to Dallas

March 2, 2011 at 10:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

About two weeks ago, Virgin America managed to do an outstanding thing. They announced that service between Chicago-O'Hare and LAX, SFO would begin in late May, but more to the point, they sold out a crazy Groupon deal in a matter of a couple hours. The bargain was pay $7 and get $77 in airfare towards a roundtrip purchase on Virgin America’s new ORD routes, and the deal was good on Groupon's Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco sites...all of whom ate it up.

Well, the deal is back. Except this time it's a bit modified, and it's for Virgin America's Dallas-Fort Worth routes. DFW is still a new destination for VX, seeing as how they only kicked their spurs into the place back in December. Here's the details behind the airfare discount they've offering today (and keep in mind it's a limited thing!):

Make Lemons Into Lemonade: This is the Time to Visit Flood-Free Areas of Queensland, Australia

January 24, 2011 at 9:06 AM | by | Comments (0)

Flooding has really hampered tourism in Queensland, Australia. But not the actual floods. Although it was one of the continent's worst natural disasters, none of the main tourism spots—including Cairns, Port Douglas, the Whitsundays, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast—were affected by the floods, which occurred more than 620 miles away.

And while tourism officials tried to let travelers know they were open for business, tourists canceled trips Down Under en masse. That means now's the time to book that trip to Australia you've been meaning to take.

And Airbus' 10,000 Airplane Order Goes to...Virgin America

January 17, 2011 at 10:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

One of our favorite games to play here at Jaunted is guess the next Virgin America destination. Just don't say Chicago because that's always just around the corner...

Anyway, Virgin America's route map is about to get all sorts of scribbled on with new flights in the next 5-8 years as the airline has just placed the necessary airplane orders to increase their fleet from 34 planes to 111. That's a whole lot of in-flight WiFi, mood lighting and airplane-sized bottles of absinthe. Virgin even scored the historical 10,000 order from Airbus, flying in a ski-injuried Richard Branson for the occasion.

All of this is of course great news for the airline, but excellent news for anyone who's been wanting to fly Virgin America as they've launched a celebratory fare sale with flights from January 31 to May 11 for as low as $60. You've got two days to book your flights—DO IT HERE—as the sale ends on Wednesday, January 19.

Now is the Time to Spontaneously Book Some Trips

January 10, 2011 at 5:22 PM | by | Comments (4)

Something's going on. There have been far too many cheap cheap airfares lately from the USA to Europe for travel through May on Iberia and it's starting to make us think twice. Here's a perfect example: the $250 Milan flights and $290 Paris flights, which—yes, we booked—but still haven't really gone away. Is Iberia crazy or just awesome?

To be fair, we're flying American Airlines direct flights with their deals via the Iberia website, but you won't find the ridiculously low rates on American's site, nosireebob. Still, it is the low season in Europe and airfares are supposed to get cheap this time of the year, but then these popped up: $689 to South Africa and $478 to Istanbul. What does Iberia know that we don't?

We suppose we'll find out when we fly our $250 Europe roundtrip later this month. Until then, score yourself some equally impressive deals by searching Iberia.com directly, and keeping your dates flexible.

The Sweetest Travel Deal Of 2010 Is...

December 30, 2010 at 1:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2010 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2011, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2010 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Had you been willing to part with a cool $499 or $699 at the start of this last fall, you would have had the chance to join hundreds of other travelers in scoring the Sweetest Travel Deal of 2010: JetBlue's All You Can Jet Pass for one month of (mostly) unlimited travel on JetBlue's and lo. 2010 was AYCJ's second year of filling fall's empty seats with intrepid little traveler butts for the small three-digit sum, at a price most other airlines woudld't even charge for one flight in regular business class
