Gogo Goes Next Level With New Logo, Streaming Content and More

It's official! In-Flight WiFi provider (and all around awesome people) Gogo In-Flight have announced their plans to go both international with coverage, and to expand offerings to include streaming content. This shouldn't be news to you at all, especially since we snuck around Gogo's Chicago HQ almost two months ago and put our fingers on the new system ourselves and then told you all about it.

Gone are the days of crossword puzzles, and $5.99 mystery/thriller novels bought in a rush from the airport bookstore. At least these things are over in paper form, as travelers bring more and more new gadgets onboard airplanes and In-Flight WiFi opens up a whole new level of personal entertainment. The current industry leader in that realm is Gogo, whom you may know from giving them your credit card information to access WiFi onboard AirTran, American, Virgin America, Delta, Alaska Airlines, United, US Airways, Frontier, and two planes on Air Canada.

This is the Antenna That Delivers Gogo In-Flight WiFi to Your Airplane

Have you sent your first "I'm typing this from an airplane" tweet yet? The ability to do something that seemingly simple is really the result of millions and millions of dollars, countless hours of technical work, innummerable contracts and even tech spies flying the skies. This is the realm of Gogo In-Flight, a Chicago-based company that travelers interact with by paying for their service on WiFi-equipped flights on AirTran, American, Virgin America, Delta, Alaska Airlines, United, US Airways, Frontier, and two planes on Air Canada.

During a recent visit to Chicago, we had the opportunity to interact with Gogo on a whole new level; we peeked around their HQ near O'Hare Airport, and—gasp—actually saw the doohickey that sits inside an airplane and allows you to update your Facebook profile from 35,000-feet. You Bring the iPad and American Airlines Will Bring the Movies and In-Flight WiFi

Chalk another one up for American Airlines. The carrier is moving quickly in the new in-flight entertainment arena, announcing later yesterday that they're beginning to experiment with a new way from Aircell to stream media from the internet directly to your WiFI-enabled device, in flight.

American really isn't slouching on in-flight tech. They've had an iPhone app—which now tells if your flight is equipped with the WiFI they're installing—and American is totally down with mobile boarding passes, too. So hey, if streaming content is available then why not trial it, right? Right.

Faster Speeds and International Flights are on the Horizon for Aircell and Gogo

It’s no secret that we love us some access to in-flight WiFi, and now it looks like the internet in the sky party is getting even better. After storming into the skies within the last few years, it looks like Aircell and their Gogo service is about to up the ante.

Thanks to some newfangled cellular technology, your in-flight download speeds are about to get a little bit faster, as Aircell is planning to boost its capacity within the next two years. They're hoping that the faster speeds should be available during the first half of 2012, but the only catch is that airlines will need to choose to upgrade their equipment onboard their planes. Let’s just hope that some of those checked baggage fees can be spent towards ridiculous internet speeds, as we just need video streaming when at 35,000 feet.

NetJets Hooks Up Private Planes with High Speed In-Flight WiFi

The crusade for in-flight wifi claims another victory as major private jets provider NetJets announces that they will equip 250 planes in their fleet with high-speed internet from Aircell.

Although this doesn't affect a vast majority of travelers, it does however mean that businessmen, politicians and Kanye West—when he calls up another "BABYMAMAJET"—will be able to tweet, blog, and yea do other online business stuff while at 30,000 feet. We can hear Kanye loading up his blog and hitting the caps lock key already.

Foursquare's in the Air With New 'Mile High' Badge for In-Flight WiFi

Are you on Foursquare yet? The location-based social network that lets you "check in" to places you go from your phone for points and "badges" is growing like wildfire, and we're huge proponents of it. Actually, you can be our friend on Foursquare here to see tips we've left at our favorite places around the globe.

While you're hopping around and checking in, you can now earn what we think may just be the coolest Foursquare badge yet. It was announced today that Gogo, the biggest provider of in-flight internet (used on airlines like Delta, American, AirTran and Virgin America) has teamed up with Foursquare to create the "Mile High Badge."

Gogo Throws a Summer Sale on Their Monthly In-flight WiFi Plan

We’ve had the pleasure of using Gogo in-flight internet on a number of flights across different airlines, and at this point we get a little bummed out when it’s not available. However, we’re a little afraid of commitment and haven’t selected the monthly subscription just yet.

Now's the time to be thinking these thoughts anyway as their monthly subscription price just got a bump in the right direction—down. If you sign up for a monthly plan, in-flight WiFi magic will cost you only $19.95. The only downer is that the $34.95 price kicks back in once the second month rolls around, but the discount might be enough for some to skip the Gogo Flight Passes and think long term. At least the subscription works across all carriers where the service is available.

Frontier Airlines Announces That They Too Will Have In-Flight WiFi

Late-breaking news today, which is very exciting! After last week's announcement that Republic/Midwest Airlines/Frontier would all be transitioned into just the Frontier brand, the new(er) Frontier has today signed up to get in-flight WiFi installed across their fleet of Embraer aircraft.

Frontier now joins Virgin America, Delta and more airlines in using the Gogo in-flight internet, and Frontier plans to have the service installed on 32 E170 and E190 aircraft by the end of 2010.

Already passengers on Frontier get to keep Midwest's famous warm chocolate chip cookie service, and now they're adding in-flight WiFi onto the amenities list. You will have to pay for it however, as plans for in-flight access start as low as $4.95 and creep up until you hit the monthly rate of $39.95 across all available airlines.

Alaska Airlines Is Going Whole Hog With In-Flight WiFi From Gogo

It's been a year since Alaska Airlines began testing their in-flight WiFi and we wondered if they would ever just go whole hog and plug in the whole fleet, already. Well, we're happy to say that they've finally decided to do it, but not with Row 44 as they initially planned, but with the most popular provide of in-flight wifi: Gogo.

If you're not familiar with Gogo, you should know that they already have outfitted Virgin America's fleet, AirTran's fleet, and many planes for the likes of American, Delta and United. Although there's no date yet set for the completion of fleet-wide installation for Alaska Airlines, they are already working to install it on the first 737-800.

Hopefully soon we'll all be able to make bad puns from 35,000 feet: "Juneau where I'm flying now?!"

Continental Hops On The In-Flight WiFi Bandwagon With Gogo

We have a saying here at Jaunted when it comes to In-Flight WiFi: even if you're late to the party, at least you've made it to the party. This absolutely applies to good old Continental Airlines who, after recently going cashless cabin, are now catching up with the other cool carriers by announcing that they're getting in-flight WiFi using Gogo.

Happily, it's coming sooner rather than later; with Continental installing Gogo on their 21 Boeing 757-300 aircraft, starting before summer 2010. Continental is Aircell's ninth airline partner using Gogo, joining Air Canada, AirTran, American, Delta/Northwest, United, US Airways and Virgin America. Of course this will only apply to Continental's domestic routes until the whole long-haul in-flight WiFi thing gets figured out, but that's cool with us so long as we're making strides toward it.

United Finally Debuts Some Airplanes With In-Flight WiFi

They are a little tardy to the party, but when it comes to in-flight WiFi, better late than never. Last week United Airlines began WiFi service on flights between New York and California. If you’re a United regular out of O’Hare you might just have to rely on the WiFi within the terminal for now.

The plane that they’ve equipped is a Boeing 757, and they are hoping to have 13 of them ready to go for in-flight fun by the middle of November. That means you’ll be able to email back-and-forth with your ride home for Thanksgiving to say that you’ve been circling the airport for the last 30 minutes due to runway congestion. If your flight isn’t delayed, you can always get a head start on your online holiday shopping.
