Happy Birthday, Aviation: Many Airlines Celebrating Major Anniversaries in 2014

Ever heard of the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line? We're guessing probably not, but the Smithsonian sure has; the seaplane carrier is classified as the world's first airline, which inaugurated commercial air service in 1914 when it took off with one paying passenger. It may have been a short journey (only 23 minutes!), but the Airboat Line's impact extends to today as commercial aviation has become a $2.2 trillion dollar industry, employing over 57 million people.

In 2014, the world celebrates 100 years of commercial air travel, but that's not all.

In this last century, airlines and airplanes have evolved into a fact of everyday life for travelers, and some of the pioneering companies will mark milestones this year. Here's who to wish "happy anniversary":

Watch Air Malta Flight Attendants Dance 'Gangnam Style' on a Plane

ANSWER: Because you need to turn off your cell phone for flight.

You know, you don't hear much about Air Malta. Trust us that they're a legit airline based in—you guessed it—Malta and (surprise surprise) we've actually flown 'em! It was a short hop from Rome to Malta, but still.

Anyway, Air Malta spent 2012 rebranding to a fresher, more modern image and are now determined to make a final impression with a PSA for their travelers to turn off their phones in flight.

The video (below) depicts a full (staged) flight where the flight attendants dance down the aisle to Psy's hit "Gangnam Style" and the pilot unfurls the final message.

Two Thumbs Up for Air Malta's New Look and Livery

You might not be that familiar with Air Malta, but the official airline of the tiny Mediterranean island country is looking to change that as they go through a kind of reboot. Apparently airline officials were sick and tired of their old look, so they hired some designers, ordered some paint, and upgraded the look of their planes.

Air Malta now has a snazzy new livery, as they look to let the world know that they exist. The new look was recently debuted at the Malta International Airshow, and we’ve got to say—we like what we see. The bold colors along the fuselage that run into the tail look pretty good to us, and the large font towards the front of the plane makes it pretty darn clear where this plane is going.
