Fly on Southwest for $25 (or The Price of a Second Checked Bag on a Different Airline)

October 27, 2009 at 10:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

Yesterday, we bemoaned that airfares were getting more expensive but if you can hop in on this new sale from Southwest, you can fly short distances starting at $25 each way.

The sale starts today and ends at 11:59PST on October 29th and is good for travel between Dec. 2, 2009 and Dec. 16, 2009, or travel between Jan. 5, 2010, and Feb. 10, 2010. And the prices are easy to remember as everything is increments of 25. Flights up to 375 miles start at $25 one-way. Between 375 and 549 miles, fares are $50 one-way. Between 550 and 999 miles, fares are $75 one-way. Flights longer than a 1,000 miles will be the more expensive of the group, starting at about $100 per ticket.

Air New Zealand Seeks Help From 'The Bachelor' For Its Matchmaking Flight

July 13, 2009 at 12:11 PM | by | Comments (2)

What is going on with Air New Zealand these days? They are releasing one gimmicky promo after the next. First, there was the group of people who wore body advertisements for the Kiwi airline, then came airline employees covered in body paint, followed by the announcement of a matchmaking flight and then some more body paint.

This time, the matchmaking flight from Los Angeles to Auckland has decided to bring onboard a successful love match to inspire hope in the other singletons on the flight—Jason Mesnick and his girlfriend, Molly of the ABC show, "The Bachelor."

The October 13 trip is all about finding love (and filling up Air New Zealand planes), with a plane load of singles heading down to Auckland for a major party. And we're expecting at least a few Kiwi-American marriages to come out of this.

Since everyone else will be single, we're not sure that inviting Jason and Molly along is quite the right thing to do, but there's definitely one good side to it – to celebrate this announcement, Air New Zealand is offering tickets at $200 off. If you book by Wednesday with the LOVE200 code=, you'll get your return Los Angeles to Auckland flight plus all the attached partying for $580, which is a pretty low price to pay for the prospect of some Kiwi love.

Qantas Strikes Back Against Virgin and Delta in Down Under War

Where: Australia
March 17, 2009 at 11:01 AM | by | Comment (1)

The Down Under War has well and truly started. We're talking the war on flights from the United States down to Australia, a market that's got boiling hot since V Australia threw its hat in the ring. And Delta is just a few months away from starting their own cheap flights to Sydney.

Likely-to-lose airline Qantas, which has happily served these routes at jacked-up regular prices for decades, has really thrown down the gauntlet this week.

They're now offering $299 one-way flights between Los Angeles and various Australian and New Zealand destinations, and with taxes that means you can get a return flight for as low as $676 with nearly all departure dates through to October 24 eligible for the special--if you book by March 20.

For these prices, we'd be going back to Qantas--after all, V Australia usually makes you pay for extras like movies, and Qantas offers all those great Aussie wines Actually, VAustralia not only offers free in-flight entertainment, but during the inaugural, movies were free. Yup, we watched Slumdog Millionaire for free. Furthermore, VA is offering a bunch of Australian wines. So who will win us over in the end? We'd be tempted by anyone offering sub-$500 round-trips from the US to Oz.
