Late last year Winnipeg’s new airport opened (re-named the rather exceptionally long “Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport”) and, with it, came a brand spanking new Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge.
We’ve always liked Air Canada’s lounges, with their streamlined design, plentiful snackies, and generous self-serve bars. And, heading through Winnipeg's lounge on our last trip through the airport, we found that it has all of the same goodies we've come to expect from Maple Leaf Lounges at larger airports: a comfy sitting area, a dining area, a place to park it in front of the TV, and a business center with complimentary WiFi. Winnipeg's Maple Leaf Lounge also has a space with a bar-like atmosphere.
Whiteoutabout a murder in Antarcticanot the old school liquid stuff that covers typos, opens in theaters nationwide today. The movie stars Kate Beckinsale, who has yet to mention whether or not her boogers froze while filming, as a Deputy Marshal sent to investigate the murder. To capture the feeling of the Antarctic, they filmed the movie in various locations across Quebec and Manitoba, including Lake Winnipeg, just outside of Winnipeg, Lake Manitoba and Boucherville.
Winnipeg used to be thought of as the armpit of Canada (see New Jersey, Canada had one too) but recently the city has actually become a cultural hub with world class restaurants, festivals and an arts district in the center of town.
We tell you where to follow White Out around Quebec:
New In Town, starring Renee Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr and former SNL cast member Siobhan Fallon Hogan opens in theaters today. The movie is about a a tough Miami-based executive (Zellweger) who is sent to New Ulm, Minnesota to prep a food manufacturing plant for layoffs and eventual shutdown but instead finds love. It's your typical big city girl is miserable in small town, meets small town guy she can't stands and then suddenly realizes they are meant to be together.
The Miami shots were primarily filmed in Miami but for the Minnesota scenes they went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. If you have seen any interviews with Renee or HCJ you know that the movie was filmed last winter when it was extremely cold, nearly -50, causing something called "nostricals" to form under their noses. If you too want to experience "nostricals" and all the hilarity that ensues from nearly freezing to death, here's the guide for you.
