Pick Your Poison Via Touch Screen At Clo Wine Bar In NYC

Where: 10 Columbus Circle [map], New York, NY, United States, 10019
September 17, 2009 at 5:23 PM | by amandak | 0 Comments

Lovers of interactive restaurant menus (a geeky group we do admit belonging to) need to know about a wine bar in New York that's got the geek thing going: Clo, on the fourth floor of the Time Warner Center.

Whether you know heaps about wine or only care whether it's red or white on a given night, you will probably have a lot of fun choosing your wine using Clo's "motion-activated" touch screen list. Not only that, you can pay by credit card and then—the ultimate geek touch—the wine is automatically dispensed into your glass, in 2oz or 4oz measures. No waiters required. And they have some special preservation system in place so all those open bottles of wine don't go bad.

New York Museum Adds Pop-Up Wine Bar With Central Park Views

Where: 2 Columbus Circle [map], New York, NY, United States, 10019

Manhattan’s Museum of Arts and Design most likely doesn't make your list of must-stops for an NYC cultural crawl, despite the allure of their spiffy new Columbus Circle digs.

So the contemporary art spot is following in the lead of MoMa, the Guggenheim and other stuffy art institutions that have realized you can’t attract nearly as many patrons with actual art as you can with a nightclub atmosphere and booze. There's just something about drinking in a museum that feels so wrong but so right.

Dropping Into S.N.O.B. Wine Bar in San Francisco

Where: 1327 Polk Street [map], San Francisco, CA, United States, 94109
May 20, 2009 at 3:26 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

This is S.N.O.B wine bar in San Francisco which, as you can see, stands for Sonoma, Napa or Beyond.

Despite the name, S.N.O.B. is a totally chill place to grab a glass of wine and some small bites. Wines by the bottle, glass and flights (starting at $14) are offered as well as four different types of beer (Stella Artois is on tap) and non-alcoholic drinks.

Guests can sit at the long bar or in some funky wine barrel chairs near the front. Warning: These are not comfortable. We hit up the soft couch instead which was fine and dandy until a homeless woman sat down next to us and her blew her nose on her shirt. A Snob bar? Not at all.

S.N.O.B is open Sunday-Wednesday from 4pm until 11pm and Thursday-Saturday from 4pm to midnight.

Where to Try Hip Wine Vintages in San Francisco

Where: 45 Rose St. [map], San Francisco, CA, United States, 94102
March 23, 2009 at 4:16 PM | by EricRosen | 0 Comments

Of course you would expect San Francisco to be a wine lover's city, thanks to its proximity to Napa and Sonoma. But the question is, "Where is the best place to drink wine in the city?" We say there’s nowhere better than the hole-in-the-wall wine bar, Hotel Biron.

Hotel Biron (not an actual hotel) clings to the edge of Hayes Valley, an alley-like Rose Street, with only a brightly illuminated orange “B” sign to guide you, like an errant metro station beacon. Inside the narrow space, the walls are adorned with the works of local artists, and the few minuscule tables are always packed with a mixed crowd of oenophiles.

Three Wine Bars To Try in Vienna

Where: Vienna, Austria
March 19, 2009 at 2:21 PM | by carolynb | 1 Comment

All this week, Carolyn Banfalvi will be taking us on a eat-and-drink tour of Vienna, Austria. If you have any questions or suggestions for Vienna Travel, let us know and we'll have Carolyn get back to you. Enjoy.

Everyone knows the Viennese have a thing for coffee. But Vienna is also one of Austria’s big wine-making regions. The world’s only capital city which encompasses a significant amount of wine growing areas within its limits, Vienna also offers loads of places to drink wine.

On the weekends, the Viennese head to the vineyards in the wine district on the edge of town to sample wine, have meals at the traditional wine taverns, and hike in the vineyards.

New NYC Restaurant: Terroir Wine Bar

Where: 413 East 12 Street [map], New York, ny, United States, 10009
March 12, 2008 at 3:00 PM | by sedona | 0 Comments

The busy stretch of First Ave between 12th and 13th just got a bit mellower, with the opening of Terroir Wine Bar, from owners Paul Grieco and Marco Canora. (That's Paul introducing the place in the video.)

We hear it's a cozy spot with inviting exposed brick and beat-up floor tiles that are original to the bike shop that used to be in the space. Whip out your wallet for some of the pricier wines by the glass ($15-$20) or come for the happy hour deal: five wines for $5. Snack on cremini or fried sage wrapped around lamb sausage or bring friends and dig into the charcuterie plate ($21) of nine featured meats.

If you're not into crowds, wait a few weeks until the opening fuss dies down. By April, we're sure you'll be able to sidle up to the bar to unwind any night of the week.

New NYC Restaurant: Bar Boulud

Where: 1900 Broadway [map], New York, ny, United States, 10023
January 2, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by sedona | 0 Comments

Famed chef Daniel Boulud strikes again this week in NYC, with the opening of Bar Boulud on the Upper West Side, right off Lincoln Center. Daniel's newest spot promises a casual wine bar and bistro atmosphere, but we hear it's a lot less casual than originally planned with three private dining rooms, a huge kitchen and even a separate charcuterie kitchen.

What to expect menu-wise? Rustic bistro dishes like a saffron scented poisson soup or pork, lamb and rabbit terrines. The charcuterie is rumored to be out-of-this-world, rare and delicious and the extensive wine list (overseen by Daniel Johnnes) is devoted to just two regions: Burgundy and the Rhone Valley, but it's full of plenty of options. Bar Boulud is a great spot for a little New Year's splurging in our book.

Update: NY restoblog Eater says that Bar Boulud has hit an opening snag. Expect reservations around the middle of January at the earliest.

New NYC Restaurant: Felice Wine Bar

Where: 1166 First Avenue [map], New York , ny, United States, 10065
December 19, 2007 at 9:00 AM | by sedona | 0 Comments

The Upper East Side needs one of these: a laid-back, Florentine-style wine bar, complete with a chandelier made of glass jugs and rope. Luckily, Felice Wine Bar fits the bill.

Opening up officially next week, Felice occupies the former space of Focaccia Fiorentina and offers an interesting menu with items like bamboo-steamed halibut and crostini of eggplant, as well as some great standards including burrata, foccacia, pasta and risotto.

Chef Simone Parisotto is at the helm, with partner Jacopo Giustiniani, whose family vineyard supplies the house wine. And for those of you scared of the UES, don't worry. Felice is just north of Midtown near 64th Street.

New NYC Restaurant: Gottino

Where: 52 Greenwich Avenue [map], New York, ny, United States, 10014
December 5, 2007 at 9:05 AM | by sedona | 0 Comments

If there's one thing that's a perennial favorite on the restaurant scene in New York, it's a well-done wine bar. Enter Gottino, a new enoteca in the far West Village.

Michael Bull and Chef Jody Williams (of nearby Morandi) have just opened Gottino, which offers a seemingly mile-long bar, candlelight, exposed brick and wine options scratched on chalkboards. It's all very rustic and dim, with a cool crowd.

Dig into the platters of meats and cheeses or the menu, with its small plates like grass-fed beef carpaccio with black truffles, broccoli rabe crostini and shaved Brussel sprout salad. The place is open till 2 am and ready to serve the late crowd, but don't expect any mixed drinks: Gottino serves wine and beer only.
