In-Flight WiFi Meets SkyMall With New 'SkyTown Center' Service
It was only a matter of time before in-flight WiFi was used for evil. Well, not exactly, but we aren’t totally thrilled that we might be subjected to some hardcore in-flight advertising while we are trying to get some work done. There’s a new service called SkyTown Center and it’s sort of like an online version of the SkyMall catalog. Sure it will bring free WiFi to many passengers, but it will also bring loads of advertisements and access to websites only related to buying stuff.
Thankfully entertainment will also be built into the online shopping service so that passengers will be able to watch some TV, play some games, and read about where they are going. All this will be free, and probably filled with ads, but navigating away to check your email will cost you a little bit. Anything to keep people entertained—and hopefully quiet—in the cabin is a good idea.

United Finally Debuts Some Airplanes With In-Flight WiFi
They are a little tardy to the party, but when it comes to in-flight WiFi, better late than never. Last week United Airlines began WiFi service on flights between New York and California. If you’re a United regular out of O’Hare you might just have to rely on the WiFi within the terminal for now.
The plane that they’ve equipped is a Boeing 757, and they are hoping to have 13 of them ready to go for in-flight fun by the middle of November. That means you’ll be able to email back-and-forth with your ride home for Thanksgiving to say that you’ve been circling the airport for the last 30 minutes due to runway congestion. If your flight isn’t delayed, you can always get a head start on your online holiday shopping.

Today is a proud day for advocates of almighty in-flight WiFi, as a surprise dropped in our inbox this morning announcing that US Airways has signed up to equip its planes with Aircell's Gogo WiFi.

Take That Southwest: AirTran To Offer Free WiFi From Boston in August
For those who haven’t been taking notes, Southwest Airlines is set to take off from Logan Airport in Boston starting halfway through August. Hopefully their low cost model will help lower flight prices out of Beantown; it has already brought some freebies to flyers thanks to a little friendly competition.
AirTran knows the stakes are high, so they are offering free WiFi aboard all their flights that travel between BOS and BWI—one of Southwest’s main routes. The free in-flight WiFi will be available for the whole month of August, in hopes that travelers will choose their WiFi planes over the other guys.

This Week In In-Flight WiFi: Twitter's Role and American's Free Deal
Compared to the ice age of in-flight Wifiwhich was like, last yearthis week has yielded a slew of positive updates on airlines' progression with outfitting their fleets and more. Before we hit the weekend and you jet away on your (hopefully) WiFi-equipped flight, let's round up the news on connectivity:
· AirTran kept their promise to outfit all of their planes with WiFi before the end of the summer, even if Virgin America beat them to it mid-way through May. To kick off fleet-wide service, they launched a series of "netiquette" videos, instructing you to not do such things as eBay auction off your seatmate's clothing or conduct business meetings with bagels in the lavatory (maybe without bagels?).

The Scoop On WiFi In The Sky; Now With Canada
Our neighbors across the border are on their way to enjoying sweet, sweet in-flight WiFi. SkySurf Canada has been awarded a license to provide Internet access up there, as the Gogo of the north, if you will. Aircell is already looking to become friendly with them, but for now it appears as though things will be slow to start, although Air Canada does plan to offer WiFi connectivity later this year on flights from Toronto to Los Angeles.
Back at home, Delta is plugging along in equipping their planes with in-flight WiFi. They’ve made some good progress in recent weeks and have almost completed WiFi installation on 60% of their pre-merger domestic fleet. Installation on the airline’s first wide-body jet is set to take place on July 9, and the Boeing 767-300 will be testing things out on July 13. You’ll be happy to know they are hard at work on Northwest’s pre-merger fleet as final designs will be determined this month.

Gogo Goes With A Monthly In-Flight WiFi Plan, But Is It Worth It?
We love in-flight WiFi and you know we don’t try to hide it. That’s why we were stoked—if people use that word anymore—to hear that Gogo Inflight Internet is now offering a monthly pass. This is a great option for frequent fliers that are tired of shelling out $10 bucks or so every time they want to catch up on email, and it means that Gogo is going strong.
The Gogo 30-Day Pass will set you back $49.95 and is available now on Virgin America and Delta. However, your pass is only good for a single carrier, so you can’t use your monthly pass on both of the airlines. With Delta only having some of their planes equipped and no way to know if you're on one until boarding, we think Virgin America is the safer choice.
On the flip side of this move, this is just another bill we’ll have each month for Internet access. With access at home, on our phones, and now in the sky, we're doling out a lot of cash to stay connected. What do you think? Deal or no deal when it comes to Gogo’s new monthly connection plan? Let us know in the comments below.

Summer Is Only Days Away, Is AirTran's WiFi Ready?
About a month ago, AirTran totally threw down a serious challenge to all other domestic carriers when they announced that all their planes were getting equipped with WiFi by this summer. Virgin America finished off their in-flight WiFi project soon after and stole AirTran’s thunder, but the ATL-based airline is still working hard to reach their goal.
If you’re familiar with a calendar, you’d know that the first day of summer is this upcoming Sunday. We haven’t heard that much from AirTran, so let’s just hope they’re almost done and are just waiting to surprise us when they are finished. They didn’t specify when this summer, so we’ll cut them some slack.
There doesn’t be to be too much of a buzz surrounding their service online. You’ll find much more information and first-hand reviews from flyers on Delta and Virgin America. However, buried in a press release about that guy who’s living on one of their planes, as of June 15 all of the airline’s 737 planes, about 50 of them, have been equipped with WiFi. That is pretty good, but they have a lot more Boeing 717s that need the WiFi love too. We'll keep an eye on them for you, and let you know when they're totally tech-friendly.

Delta's Fleetwide In-Flight WiFi Keeps On Keeping On
Delta just made tech fiends like us very happy this month, when they announced that all 115 of their MD88 birds have been fully equipped with precious in-flight WiFi capabilities.
Delta had been starting off WiFi integration slowly, but once they got the hang of it, the airline started moving quickly with the installations; perhaps they actually read comment cards? Just look for the WiFi decal when you board the plane, and you can rest assured that life links like Twitter, Gmail, and Facebook will be just a touchpad click away, as soon as you reach cruising altitude..

Queensland Trains Will Soon Get Some WiFi Love
If you are lucky enough to live in southeast Queensland, you might be able to email your boss right from the commuter train—just make sure you don’t tell her how you really feel about your annual review. New wireless equipment is being installed to allow security footage to be streamed to the train’s headquarters in Brisbane, and commuters are going to get the WiFi runoff. Hopefully, American politicians have an idea like this in mind when they start to finalize those new high-speed trains.

Delta Doing Its Best To Meet Summer WiFi Deadline
We've certainly not forgotten that Delta has promised us, well everyone, domestic fleetwide WiFi by the summer. So we have to ask, how are these plans coming along?
The Delta Blog is doing a great job of revealing which planes are enabled each week, as well as providing the tail numbers for the birds. Unlike Virgin America that has their own summer pledge, you really can’t determine if your plane will have WiFi or not before you get to the gate. Although, it’s definitely better than nothing.
If you just must have WiFi, your best bet it to book trips aboard one of their MD-88s, as 91 of these guys are packing Internet power.
