WestJet is Now Boarding the Nonstop to Warm Fuzzies

December 4, 2014 at 9:41 AM | by | Comments (0)

We don’t easily get choked up watching airline videos on YouTube, but once again WestJet has us reaching for a tissue to wipe away the tears this holiday season. The carrier from Canada is at it again, as this year they brought their own version of a Christmas miracle down to one community in the Dominican Republic.

The airline setup a little kiosk within the Puerto Plata community of Nuevo Renacer, and residents lined up one by one to share their wishes with a Santa on the screen. Well, sure enough Santa was able to grant each and every wish—from a washing machine to a horse.

American Airlines, JetBlue, and Virgin America Lead the New Routes News

October 10, 2014 at 12:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· JetBlue:
The free snacks and blue chips are on the move once again, as JetBlue is adding a couple new options to their route network. The carrier plans to do the nonstop thing between Las Vegas and San Francisco beginning on January 5. Things will head back and forth two times each and every day, and it’ll be some of the carrier’s Airbus A320s doing the flying. JetBlue isn’t done there either, as they have one more flight to add. October 29 will bring nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Fort Lauderdale too.

· American Airlines:
Here’s a new option for those that enjoy the up in the air experience offered up by American Airlines. The carrier will be heading in and out of Delta’s home in Atlanta, as they’re planning to start new nonstop flights between Los Angeles and Atlanta. The plan is to start taking to the skies beginning on March 5. American Airlines plans to send planes and people between the two cities three times each day, and they’ll be doing it all with some help from their Boeing 737-800s.

WestJet Looks to Bigger Planes for Better Budget, Long-Haul Flights

Where: Canada
July 14, 2014 at 8:52 AM | by | Comments (0)

The people over at WestJet have been offering budget flights around Canada and beyond since 1996, but now it sounds like they’re thinking about switching up their fleet to include more airplanes for more passengers, for more routes. Right now they are pretty much only utilizing different versions and flavors of the Boeing 737, but the future may bring wide-bodies.

It sounds like they’re thinking about scooping up as many as four larger planes, as they look to boost capacity—and profit—with more seats. Right now the focus seems to be Hawaii, as the carrier plans to utilize these new planes as soon as the fall of 2015.

Where: Canada
February 17, 2014 at 10:17 AM | by | Comments (0)

Good news for those flying the friendly skies in and around Canada, as it’s time for one of the country’s carriers to add a little in-flight connectivity to its menu of amenities. WestJet is now ready to flip the switch on in-flight WiFi, so be sure your tray table is in the locked position and that your gadgets are fully charged.

Panasonic must have put together a good PowerPoint presentation, as they’re the ones that will bring the wires and transmitters to the WestJet fleet. They will bring the new in-flight entertainment, and their new system will actually also replace the existing seatback screens on plenty of the planes.

For those looking to visit Walt Disney World this year the best ride there might just be aboard WestJet. The carrier from Canada recently revealed its latest livery, and this thing is all magic and Mickey Mouse.

The custom paintjob on the Boeing 737-800 features Mickey in his Sorcerer Mickey role, along with plenty of other magic sprinkled over the outside and inside of the airplane. They’re calling it the Magic Plane, and we’ve got to say—we’d call it that too.

The Most Viral Travel Video of 2013 is...

Where: Canada
December 30, 2013 at 11:51 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2013 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics. Needless to say, we're ready to get going into 2014, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2013 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

We’ve wasted time savored the moment, watching all kinds of "viral" travel videos throughout 2013. We’ve seen hardcore parkour at an airplane graveyard, lots of airline safety videos, and even a supermodel dancing through TWA's Terminal 5.

However, the most popular of all 2013 travel videos arrived just in time for the holidays, and it’s all thanks to the folks over at WestJet. In less than one month, the video has racked up over 34 million views.

December 12, 2013 at 10:05 AM | by | Comments (0)

Flying during the holiday season is frustrating at best, and you can better believe that the airlines and airports know travelers aren't exactly happy to be paying top dollar for packed flights, likely during winter weather. Thus, airlines attempt to create smiles for the season by introducing little festive touches to their inflight service.

The littlest things can go a long way to get passengers in a positive mood. Here is the list of those airlines going the extra mile, getting into the spirit, and giving back to their passengers with something special:

Delta, WestJet, and Qatar Airways Lead This Week's New Routes News

November 22, 2013 at 8:49 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Qatar Airways:
More planes and people will be taking to the skies in 2014, as Qatar Airways is getting ready to start some new nonstop service. The plan is to connect their base in Doha all the way over to Edinburgh Airport in Scotland. Things will operate five times each and every week, and best of all it will be some Boeing 787s doing all of the back and forth flying. Flights are scheduled to start up on May 28, and there will be continuing service to spots in Australia like Perth and Melbourne. IF you’re looking to hop aboard one of these new options, they take to the skies on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

· United:
If you need to get out of town for the weekend and hit the slots and the tables then look to see what United is now offering, as the carrier is getting ready to start up some new nonstop service to Atlantic City, New Jersey. As of now it sounds like April 1 will be the big day for the new flights, as the nonstop options will depart from both Houston Bush Intercontinental and Chicago O'Hare en route all the way over to Atlantic City. Stretch your legs before hopping aboard, as the always comfortable Embraer ERJ145 regional jets will be the planes heading into the skies.

Hey, Who's Up for the Inevitable April Fools' Day Travel Gags?

April 1, 2013 at 4:17 PM | by | Comments (0)

Someday, someone will explain to us the mirth to be found in having the Internet become useless every year on April 1st. It's not that we harbor any hostility toward people who write things that are false but plausible, and who then giggle when people belie—actually, no. Those people are ridiculous and they make the world a worse place to live.

There was maybe a marginal justification for their existence when the Internet was younger. Back then April Fools' Day pranks were the web advertising equivalent of Superbowl commercials. But now that the White House is posting pranks the whole thing is just grating.

This Week's New Routes News: WestJet, easyJet, and Virgin America

February 15, 2013 at 9:19 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· WestJet:
We haven’t heard too much from the folks over at WestJet lately, but apparently that’s just because they have been busy planning some new options. This week it sounds like they’re coming to visit us here in the United States, as they’re getting ready for some new flights to spots like Myrtle Beach and Dallas. Starting on May 2 there will be nonstop flights between Toronto and Myrtle Beach a couple times per week, as it looks like Thursdays and Sundays will be the days for flying. If you want to head to Dallas instead—they’ve got you covered—as WestJet will be linking Calgary with Big D beginning on April 29 each and every day of the week. These are destinations number 19 and 20 for WestJet to the United States, and we say keep ‘em coming!

· Virgin America:
It’s a double-dose of new route news out of Virgin America this week, so we thought we’d mention it one more time. Up first are their plans to link San Francisco with Austin beginning on May 21. Tickets are already up for sale, so if you’re looking to head between SFO and AUS they’ve got you covered. The next planned route for the carrier is some seasonal service up to Alaska, as they’re thinking about connecting San Francisco with Anchorage. Those flights will head back and forth like six times per week, and things will run all summer long between June 6 and September 9. Tickets are already up for sale—one-way fares between SFO and AUS will set you back as little as $89, but it’s going to be $199 between SFO and ANC.

WestJet Pulls Off the First Travel Flashmob for This Holiday Season

Where: Calgary, Canada
December 11, 2012 at 12:55 PM | by | Comments (0)

Airlines and airport love flashmobs. Why? Well, it could have something to do with the fact there's always a large enough captive audience to view, record and social media share the spectacle, but there's also the fact that travelers during the holiday season aren't exactly the happiest bunch and maybe need a little positive boost before boarding that plane. Whatever the reason, travel flashmobs go hand-in-hand with holidays now, and WestJet is first out of the gate for 2012.

On December 4, WestJet organized one of their aircraft to "arrive" from the North Pole to Calgary International and, at 11:30pm before a packed red-eye flight to Toronto, gift those passengers with stockings full of goodies (including Apple iPod Shuffles).

We'll keep other spoilers to ourselves, but do watch the video below and be on the look-out over the next couple weeks as more airports and airlines are, without a doubt, entering final rehearsal for their own flashmobs.
