Sydney Duststorm Gives Preview Of Armageddon
With the September equinox upon us, yesterday began talk about the end of the world, and when people in Sydney woke up this morning, a lot of them thought it was true. Massive red dust storms hit the city and made it look like something out of an apocalyptic movie.
Basically, super-strong winds from the west of the country picked up a pile of red dirt from the dry outback in South Australia and western New South Wales and then stormy weather dumped it all on Sydney and surrounding areas; when the sun shone on the dust, everything turned red. Visibility problems stopped the ferries and caused traffic chaos, and many flights were diverted to Brisbane and Melbourne.

Biblical Weather Over The Weekend In Asia, With Two Typhoons And An Earthquake
After a punishing weekend of pummeling rain, landslides, flooding, and collapsing houses, Taiwan and The Philippines are licking their wounds and counting the dead resulting from being hit by Typhoon Morakot.
The collapsed six-story Taiwan hotel in the picture above, whose 300 guests were all successfully evacuated, ended up collapsing into the floor waters, and it's no wonder with some southern cities getting dumped on by over 80 inches of rain. Before Morakotwhich means "Emerald" in Thai made landfall on Taiwan, it first killed 21 people in The Philippines. Among the dead were two Belgian tourists and a French tourist.

Snow On The Bluegrass
With so much travel news raining down on us, we don't always have time to give every story its own forecast. Here's more of the day's news, in brief.
Gross, East Coast!: Winter storms today disrupted travel plans in Boston, New York City and... Lexington, Kentucky? Some 473,000 citizens are powerless today from last night's ice storm, surpassing the number affected by 2003 ice storms in The Horse Capital of the World. Blue Grass Airport is open but currently run by generators. [Kentucky.com]
Jets On Sale?: Boeing announced it will cut 10,000 jobs after posting a fourth-quarter loss of over $56 billion. The airline cited a 2-month worker strike in its announcement along with, of course, the recession. [Bloomberg]
Time for a spirited debate: Should flight attendants be made to wear ads? New uniforms for Spirit Airlines' flight crew have been criticized for including an apron with a Bud Light logo slapped on the bib. The company countered the charges that such ads were "demeaning" by saying the ad sales are necessary to keep fares low. [South Florida Sun Sentinel]
Gateway to the West: Angel Island Immigration Station, San Francisco's answer to Ellis Island, will reopen in February after a four-year, $60 million renovation project. Originally built in response to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 -- that is, to detain or turn away Chinese immigrants -- the station became a national park in 1954 but visitors were largely restrained to the grounds.
