Hollywood's Sugary Side: The Waffle

Hollywood has never been a favored foodie destination, mostly because it's hard to work up an appetite when all you see is super-skinny people eating tiny bites of sushi and Pinkberry. So last time we were there, we were pretty pleased to notice The Waffle, a hearty, oversized, gut-busting slice of Middle America plopped right into the middle of Sunset Boulevard.
The restaurant calls their crispy, deep-pocketed namesakes "Belgian waffles," but we're betting you'd be hard-pressed to find a brown sugar sticky bun waffle or baked-in smoked bacon waffle in Antwerp. Not that we're complaining. These super-rich treats are a pretty perfect way to soak up a late-night Hollywood bar crawl, considering the Waffle is open 'til 2am on weekdays and 4am on weekends. And if those options aren't intense enough for you, it's hard to go wrong with a giant waffle sundae.
In addition to all those waffles (and waffle fries), the restaurant makes a few nods to non-breakfast obsessives, with comfort food staples like meatloaf, chili mac and chicken pot pie. We'll report back about those if we can see over our mound of waffles next time.

The Five Best Comfort Food Restaurants in New York

If we have one rule about eating in New York, it's never frequent any establishments that promise to specialize in more than one cuisine. If you see a pizza/chicken/subs/Chinese food joint, keep walking. There's no reason to settle for a restaurant that does five things decently when there's a specialty shop for everything.
In that spirit, we're running down the list of our favorite New York one-stop-shops for comfort food classics:

Starbucks Alternatives: Funk 'n Waffles

Sure Funk 'n Waffles offers its own organic version of just about anything you can find on the drinks menu at the 'Bux: coffee, lattes, espresso, blah, blah, blah. But you'll never find funk or waffles at the green monster.
At the end of an alley and down a flight of stairs, Funk 'n Waffles is appropriately close to the campus of Syracuse University. Inside, you'll find purple-and-green-painted walls adorned by local artwork, along with a mix of new and hand-me-down furniture.
You might not notice the Curtis Mayfield playing, though, as the smell of Belgian waffles, maple syrup and coffee is too distracting. The menu includes several sweet and savory options, like a walnut, honey and banana combo or a "falafel waffle" which is basically falafel mix cooked in a waffle iron. The shop also serves panini, breakfast sandwiches and locally made ice cream.
A few nights a week, the place even turns into a music venue. But don't worry. You can still get waffles and coffee when the funk goes live.

Waffle Travel: New York's Belgian Delights

Yesterday we got word that a Belgian waffle truck was parked in SoHo in New York. Now, when we say "Belgian waffle", we don't mean the kind of slop you get at your local greasy spoon. Nope, these are actual waffles made by a Belgian, the kind that tourists and locals alike devour while strolling the streets of Brussels and Bruge.
The wafflemobile in New York doesn't have a set schedule or location but it does have a blog. Your best bet for tracking it down is to check for updates online. (The truck could make its first foray into Brooklyn before December.)
And if you're already in New York--or love waffles enough to get there soon--you'll be able to get some free toppings with the code word "Bierbeek" until November 11. (It's the name of the proprietor's hometown.) We'd recommend the chocolate sauce.

Hick Hop Travel: Kid Rock Busted at Waffle Shop

We've stumbled into plenty of greasy spoons late at night. But we don't ever seem to get into as much trouble as guys like Kid Rock. He was arrested and charged with battery after he and his crew scuffled with a heckler outside an Atlanta Waffle House Sunday. We would've loved to see this one guy take on the Kid and five of his entourage, but on second thought, there are nicer places in Atlanta than a Waffle House at 6 am.
This isn't the first time Kid Rock has duked it out. He jostled with Tommy Lee at The Palms in Vegas during the VMAs. If you want to avoid trouble, steer clear of Phoenix, Vancouver and Universal City--Kid Rock's tour is taking him there next. You'll also have to skip The Fillmore in San Fran, which he'll rock on October 28. Then again, if you enjoy fisticuffs with the famous, track down the Waffle House on our newest map.
