Three Airlines That'll Fulfill Your Krispy Kreme Donut Kravings

November 9, 2011 at 9:10 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's Wednesday—the middle of the week—and we're traveling. We need something to get through the rest of the week and you know what would do the trick? A sugar rush brought on by some Krispy Kreme donuts. It'd be even better if they were in-flight Krispy Kreme donuts.

Good news for us and everyone! Krispy Kremes aren't just limited to standalone stores and the occasional airport kiosk; some airlines actually do serve up the glazed masterpieces direct to your traytable. For this they get major brownie donut points!

Three airlines serving Krispy Kreme in the skies:

REDjet, WestJet and Alaska Airlines Lead This Week's New Route News

July 22, 2011 at 8:55 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Alaska Airlines:
Even though their name has the world Alaska in it, Alaska Airlines seems to love Hawaii just as much as their own home. This week the airline announced that they’ll be flying nonstop between San Diego and Honolulu beginning on November 17. They’ll be using Boeing 737s on this route, and this goes along pretty well with their nonstop service between San Diego and Maui that they started up last year. Hawaiian Airlines already flies a similar route between these two cities, so maybe a little fare war can get us to paradise with a little money left over for a Mai Tai or two.

· Volaris:
The time to head to Mexico might be right now if you call Las Vegas or Los Angeles home. Volaris is launching new daily nonstop flights between those two spots and Mexico City, so if you’ve always wanted to see a little more of the real Mexico and less Americans lounging on the beach—this might be a good time. The flights run each day of the week through the end of August, and after that we’re not sure if they’ll decide to change things up. We’re still waiting for Volaris to bring some cheap flights to more parts of the country, but for now, we’ll take what we can get.

The New Routes Don't Stop Thanks to American Airlines, JetBlue, and Volaris

May 6, 2011 at 8:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· American Airlines:
Finland, Finland, Finland that’s the country for me! Well at least that’s what American Airlines is singing, as they just started up nonstop service to Helsinki over the weekend. It’s a seasonal thing, so be sure to get all your Scandinavian stuff done before the end of October. The new flights depart from Chicago en route to Helsinki with a little help from Boeing 767-300s. This is the first time American is bringing their planes to Finland, so hopefully things will catch on and the flight will become a permanent option.

· JetBlue:
Alright we knew JetBlue would be jetting back and forth between Boston and beautiful Newark, New Jersey, but this week things became official. The airline that loves in-flight television and plenty of free up-in-the-air snacks started four daily flights between the two cities on May 4. There’s a couple morning flights and a couple afternoon flights, so you should be able to find something that fits your schedule. Expect Embraer 190s on this route, which are a little smaller but just as comfy. We actually just flew this route yesterday, so it's totally open for booking and going.

All Kinds of New Routes This Week from the Likes of Alaska Airlines, American, and Continental

March 25, 2011 at 9:13 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Alaska Airlines:
If you’ve been waiting for Alaska Airlines to start even more flights to paradise, your wait is now over. Starting this Sunday—that’s March 27 for you calendar fans—nonstop service will begin between San Jose and Lihue on the island of Kauai. If you prefer leaving from Oakland, they’ve got you covered there as well, as the same destination is available beginning the following day on March 28. The San Jose flights will operate thrice per week while the Oakland planes go back and fourth four times per week. Just remember your sun block!

· Continental:
The mighty airline power that is the new United will be adding a new option south of the border beginning over the summer. Starting at June 9, Bay Area travelers will be getting a nonstop option to Guadalajara, Mexico from San Francisco. The flight will technically be a Continental branded flight for now, but we all know that their true United colors will shine through sooner than later. Flights will run every day, and will be completed thanks to some help from Boeing 737-800 jets—adios!

New Routes and New Destinations from Volaris, AirTran and More

February 4, 2011 at 10:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· AirTran:
We thought spring was right around the corner, but at this point it looks like winter might just last until July. AirTran is prepared for the worst, as the newest member of the Southwest Airlines family is starting up some new service to warm weather destinations in the Caribbean. The airline will send planes back and forth between Atlanta and the Dominican Republic beginning February 16 each day of the week. There’s also a seasonal route between Atlanta and Bermuda, but this doesn’t start until Memorial Day and ends around Labor Day. We'll meet you there!

· Frontier Airlines:
Not the most exciting destinations this week from Frontier Airlines, but for residents of Michigan and Wisconsin these new routes might just be awesome. The furry-friend airline will be bringing its warm cookies to Ironwood and Manistee, Michigan as well as Rhinelander, Wisconsin. These new flights will be connecting into Milwaukee beginning on February 18, so there’s plenty of opportunities to connect elsewhere. The new flights are available for booking this Sunday—so get those credit cards ready.

JetBlue, Delta, and ANA Celebrate the Season with Some New Routes

December 24, 2010 at 8:46 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· JetBlue:
We’ve been suspicious about JetBlue’s plan to take over New England, and it looks like their dominance over the area will continue into 2011. Starting on Memorial Day and ending after Labor Day, the airline will now send their own planes back and forth from New York-JFK to Martha’s Vineyard off the Massachusetts coast. Expect the same JetBlue service on these routes, as they’ll be utilizing their Embraer 190 planes. Service had previously been available through their buddies at Cape Air, but these new options mean blue planes and blue chips all the way to Edgartown.

· Volaris:
Now that Mexican carriers are free to start up new routes once again, it looks like Volaris is eager to get in on the action. The south of the border low cost carrier wants to link Fresno, California with Guadalajara beginning next summer. The airline has yet to announce the flight schedule and pricing, but you can expect that the fares will be quite the deal. Things should become official sometime in January, so we’ll let you know when the Fresno airport get its only international route back. It lost its former link with Mexico when Mexicana shut things down earlier this year.

Free Corona Beer on Southwest Airlines Flights, Today Only!

December 15, 2010 at 8:17 AM | by | Comments (3)

Are you flying on Southwest Airlines today? If yes, you get free Corona beers on your flight. If no, you obviously don't get free Corona beer, but you can still take advantage of the reason for the pleasing.

Today is the first official day of Southwest's complete partnership with Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris. From today, you can book Volaris flights on Southwest.com and Southwest flights on Volaris, if you so desire. But most importantly, the airlines are now codesharing; you'll be able to hop a Southwest plane to Chicago and from there, a Volaris jet to Guadalajara, for example, and have it all land on one itinerary.

To celebrate this, Southwest is handing out free Corona on all their normal flights around the USA, but only today, December 15.

Mexico's Air Safety Rating is Once Again Top Notch

Where: Mexico
December 6, 2010 at 12:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

Not too long ago the Federal Aviation Administration wasn’t totally cool with Mexico’s less than stringent stance on the country’s air travel safety. Spring Break was in jeopardy, as nervous parents might warn against flights aboard Mexicana or AeroMexico, but it appears that college kids are now ready to hit the beach without a care in the world...like usual.

US Aviation officials last week gave the all-clear to raise Mexico’s aviation safety rating back up to the top level, as things have improved south of the border. It sounds like whatever they weren’t doing before they’re doing now as the FAA feels Mexico is following all of the international air safety rules.

Volaris Invites California to their Mexican LCC Fiesta

May 5, 2009 at 12:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

While this isn't exactly the right time to announce new air routes between Mexico and the United States, actually it is probably the worst time to do so, small Mexican LCC Volaris is charging ahead with plans for summer expansion.

Let's hope that this swine flu is well put to bed by early July, when Volaris begins running daily non-stop flights from Los Angeles and Oakland to two south of the border destinations: Guadalajara and Toluca. Currently the airline flies to over 20 Mexican cities, but this marks its first international jump.

What's in the future for Volaris now that they've made it up into coveted west coast airports? Well, if Southwest has anything to say about it, the little LCC will be their new amigo and passengers will be able to book Volaris flights on Southwest's website and vice versa. One small step for Mexican flights, but one giant leap for international LCCs.

Mexico's LCC Volaris Has Its Eyes Set On The States

Where: Mexico
March 26, 2009 at 9:17 AM | by | Comments (0)

Things haven’t been too quiet south of the border, but if there’s one thing that has been quiet it’s Volaris. The low cost carrier has taken Mexico by storm, but there hasn't been too much news up in our neck of the woods.

They've promised to hookup with Southwest, but so far in the states, we've only been able look down and dream of cheap flights to the beach—at least we’ve got Viva Aerobus.

Southwest Starting Mexico Service With Volaris

Where: Mexico
November 10, 2008 at 2:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Southwest Airlines, which already has a deal with WestJet in Canada, has just announced it will start code sharing with Volaris on flights to Mexico by 2010. That means you'll be able to book all the way through to, say, Monterrey on Southwest, with one itinerary and (presumably) fewer hassles than if you booked two separate legs.

Southwest's official blog has more info:

Like our new codeshare partner WestJet, Volaris presently serves some pretty cool destinations... or should I say hot destinations! Places like Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco are certainly great places to vacation. Mexico City (via Toluca), Monterrey and Guadalajara are great business travel destinations and will complement our efforts to attract more business travelers. ...

Unlike WestJet, Volaris is an unknown brand in the US. Although they are relatively small and certainly new (they began flying in 2006), Volaris has proven themselves a successful and viable airline and are developing a new generation of flyers in Mexico.

Doughnut-loving passengers, apparently.

Mexican LCCs: Volaris, the Doughnut Airline

Where: Mexico
August 7, 2008 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

The last time we mentioned Mexican budget airline Volaris it was just to say that their use of iPods for in-flight entertainment was a neat idea. Since then we've been doing our homework and uncovered a few more must-know facts about Mexico's fastest growing airline (pretty easy when most of them are shrinking).

For a start, we bet you don't know how Volaris got its name. While we think it sounds a bit like a medication, the name Volaris was actually picked from 1000 proposals, and is a combination of volar (to fly) and the North Star, Polaris. Because of course, Mexican airlines get right up near those pole stars (not).

Volaris is based out of Toluca and flies to 19 Mexican destinations, and has permission to fly into Los Angeles as well. And they let Krispy Kreme paint the outside of one of their planes with their advertising. Knowing all that, we'll let you make your own decision about flying Volaris.
