Volaris Invites California to their Mexican LCC Fiesta
While this isn't exactly the right time to announce new air routes between Mexico and the United States, actually it is probably the worst time to do so, small Mexican LCC Volaris is charging ahead with plans for summer expansion.
Let's hope that this swine flu is well put to bed by early July, when Volaris begins running daily non-stop flights from Los Angeles and Oakland to two south of the border destinations: Guadalajara and Toluca. Currently the airline flies to over 20 Mexican cities, but this marks its first international jump.
What's in the future for Volaris now that they've made it up into coveted west coast airports? Well, if Southwest has anything to say about it, the little LCC will be their new amigo and passengers will be able to book Volaris flights on Southwest's website and vice versa. One small step for Mexican flights, but one giant leap for international LCCs.

Mexico's LCC Volaris Has Its Eyes Set On The States

Things haven’t been too quiet south of the border, but if there’s one thing that has been quiet it’s Volaris. The low cost carrier has taken Mexico by storm, but there hasn't been too much news up in our neck of the woods.
They've promised to hookup with Southwest, but so far in the states, we've only been able look down and dream of cheap flights to the beach—at least we’ve got Viva Aerobus.

Southwest Starting Mexico Service With Volaris
Southwest Airlines, which already has a deal with WestJet in Canada, has just announced it will start code sharing with Volaris on flights to Mexico by 2010. That means you'll be able to book all the way through to, say, Monterrey on Southwest, with one itinerary and (presumably) fewer hassles than if you booked two separate legs.
Southwest's official blog has more info:
Like our new codeshare partner WestJet, Volaris presently serves some pretty cool destinations... or should I say hot destinations! Places like Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco are certainly great places to vacation. Mexico City (via Toluca), Monterrey and Guadalajara are great business travel destinations and will complement our efforts to attract more business travelers. ...
Unlike WestJet, Volaris is an unknown brand in the US. Although they are relatively small and certainly new (they began flying in 2006), Volaris has proven themselves a successful and viable airline and are developing a new generation of flyers in Mexico.
Doughnut-loving passengers, apparently.

Mexican LCCs: Volaris, the Doughnut Airline
The last time we mentioned Mexican budget airline Volaris it was just to say that their use of iPods for in-flight entertainment was a neat idea. Since then we've been doing our homework and uncovered a few more must-know facts about Mexico's fastest growing airline (pretty easy when most of them are shrinking).
For a start, we bet you don't know how Volaris got its name. While we think it sounds a bit like a medication, the name Volaris was actually picked from 1000 proposals, and is a combination of volar (to fly) and the North Star, Polaris. Because of course, Mexican airlines get right up near those pole stars (not).
Volaris is based out of Toluca and flies to 19 Mexican destinations, and has permission to fly into Los Angeles as well. And they let Krispy Kreme paint the outside of one of their planes with their advertising. Knowing all that, we'll let you make your own decision about flying Volaris.

Adventures of Link: Sorry, Mexico
The age of the low cost carrier may be over--at least in Mexico. The Atlanta Journal Constitution says prices are already up 25 percent this year, and increases show no sign of stopping.
Along with rising fares, international and Mexican carriers are grounding planes and trimming capacity. Meanwhile bus companies are putting their fares on sale--a move they can afford thanks to government gasoline subsidies.
Today, we offer you some links to airlines across the border. Don't forget to book with a credit card just in case!
