Inside the Virgin Holidays V-Room Lounge at London's Gatwick Airport

Where: Gatwick Airport, London, United Kingdom
September 8, 2011 at 2:49 PM | by | ()

Itís not often that we fly business class these days so itís not often that we get the chance to hit up an airport lounge. But when we flew to Vegas last week, we were on a package with Virgin Holidays Ė the UK package company thatís part of the Virgin group. And Virgin Holidays is all about the little people Ė so it has its own lounge for economy passengers at Gatwick airport, the v-room.

Any Virgin Holidays customer can purchase a pass to the lounge for £20 (£12 for kids). For that price, you get free food, WiFi, seating, newspapers, a games room and telescopes to gawk at the runway (the floor to ceiling windows help with that too). Or, if youíve booked a package staying in one of their Platinum (premium) hotels, your access is free.

We toured the v-room when it opened a couple of years ago, and were very impressed Ė so we were looking forward to seeing how itís withstood the test of time. The answer? Extremely well.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Actually Opens May 28...to the British!

Where: Universal Studios [map], Orlando, FL, United States
March 26, 2010 at 12:54 PM | by | ()

Stop the presses and hold off on booking you tickets to Orlando! The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios is not opening on June 18th; it's opening earlier, on May 28! But only if you're arriving from Britain!

The news comes from Virgin Holidays, who announced this morning that they've inked an exclusive deal to be the official vacation package dealer for the Harry Potter theme park. Yesterday, Universal Studios said that their newest park would open to the public on June 18, but today Virgin says May 28th.

So how do you get in more than two weeks early? You've got to book a vacation package that leaves from London with Virgin Holidays. You must fly to Orlando on Virgin Atlantic and include in your trip a two-park or three-park bonus ticket or an Orlando Flex Ticket or Flex Ticket Plus. The good news is that people with existing Virgin vacations to Orlando can just add the tickets to take advantage. The bad news? You've got to leave from London-Gatwick Airport! Way to play favorites.

The cheapest package rings in at 679 GBP ($1,010) for two adults sharing a room for 7 nights at a Quality Inn in Orlando (egads!), but we'd call because that price is only good for departures after June 18. And if you dilly-dally and wait until June or later in the summer, Virgin Holidays will still give you extra-special treatment and early access...
