Clooney, Paltrow and Madonna Bring the A-List Kick to the Venice Film Festival
Yesterday the Venice Film Festival wrapped up, but not before dozens of A-Listers passed through town.
The fest kicked off with the premiere of George Clooney's Ides of March at the Hotel Excelsior and, proving he really can do it all, George drove his own boat right up to the red carpet.
But, just as quickly as he arrived, Clooney was catching a flight back to the U.S. just in time for the Telluride Film Festival where he was honored with a Silver Medallion award on Sunday.

Catherine Deneuve Nears Her 50th Year of Attending the Venice Film Fest
Catherine Deneuve spent the weekend in Venice where she presented her latest film "Potiche"' at the 67th Venice Film Festival, and proved she is still on the move.
The French actress first attended the festival in the 1960s with the movie "Belle De Jour." At the time, Deneuve was not only an upcoming actress, but also part of the '60s jet set which also included Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda and George Hamilton.

Venice Film Fest Brings Psycho Ballerinas and Wannabe Rap Stars to Italy
Black Swan will kick off opening night.
After a summer of lackluster movies—The Expendables and Piranha 3D, seriously?—we're eager to see some great fall flicks. The first place we're looking to is the 67th annual Venice Film Festival, which happens September 1 to 11.
Although the Venice event isn't the flashiest or most star-studded of the fests, it's got cred; it's the world's oldest film festival.
The fest will have some famous folks in attendance. Sofia Coppola will be there with her boyfriend's band "Phoenix" to promote her new drama, Somewhere, set in favorite Hollywood hotel Chateau Marmont. Natalie Portman, Helen Mirren, Ben Affleck and Quentin Tarantino are also expected to turn up at the fest.

Hugo Chavez and Paris Hilton Take Venice Film Fest By Storm

The big news at the 66th Annual Venice Film Festival—aside from George Clooney introducing his latest girlfriend to the world—has to do, as always, with movie debuts that tend to get film buffs riled up in their plush, reclining chairs. This year's festival drew names including Oliver Stone, Matt Damon, Michael Moore, and—oh, god—Paris Hilton to the celebration of international film.
Stone had one of the more memorable red carpet moments of the festival when he walked buddy-buddy style with Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez to the premiere of South of the Border, his film about the leader and stereotypes associated with him. As The Telegraph UK reports, the two were surrounded by a swarm of 50 bodyguards. Necessary, sure, but also in keeping with Stone's penchant for controversy.

It's Clooney On A Boat! George Sings For His Superfans in Venice
Often overshadowed by its cousins in Toronto and Cannes, the Venice Film Festival isn't so much forgotten as snuck into most A-listers' schedules in a rush of press trips. But attendees at this year's Venetian outing got a treat yesterday: George Clooney, performing live! One night only!
Also, one song only: After technical problems hit a screening of his new movie "Men Who Stare At Goats," the world's favorite bachelor (despite bringing along his new girlfriend) serenaded the crowd with "O Sole Mio"tune of stereotyped gondoliers everywhere. Who knew he could sing, besides everyone who saw "O Brother Where Art Thou"?

Michael Moore Floods Into Venice For The International Film Fest
Today in Venice, the city is full of prosecco glasses clinking and red carpets rolling out as the Venice International Film Festival beginsthe world's oldest film festivaland this year brings another impressive roster of films battling for the Golden Lion prize.
Actually, come to think of it, SkyEurope had routes to Venice's Treviso airport; we sure hope no one is stranded elsewhere trying to get to Venice for the films, because they'll sure be missing out on some good stuff. For instance, Michael Moore is using the fest to premiere his newest: "Capitalism: A Love Story," about the US economic meltdown.

Film Festival Travel: Hathaway Soldiers On
Anne Hathaway poses for photos before the opening of her new movie, "Rachel Getting Married," at the Venice Film Festival. She stars in the Jonathan Demme-directed indie as a wild child reunited with her family for the wedding of her sister (Rosemarie DeWitt).
Hathaway has been stowed out of sight as more information comes out about her ex-boyfriend Rafael Follieri's cons. The latest revelation is that she, not knowing how much trouble he was in, paid his $37,000 rent for four months. Next time, use HotelChatter to find a hotel!

In the Dark Travel: Five Must-Sees at the 2008 Venice Film Festival
The Venice Film Festival, held August 27 through September 4, just announced its slate of films, and we're so excited. It may not have the cachet of Cannes, but at least there aren't any jellyfish on its shores. Here's what's on our ticket list:
- 5. "The Wrestler" One of only five American films in competition this year, this is Darren Aronofsky's follow-up to the controversial "The Fountain" starring Mickey Rourke and Evan Rachel Wood.
- 4. "The Burning Plain" Now that Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo Arriaga, the director and screenwriter of "21 Grams" and "Babel," have ended their partnership, we're looking forward to seeing what Arriaga might have up his sleeve with this drama about a woman (Charlize Theron) trying to reunite with her estranged mother (Kim Basinger), a casting that could either go really right or super wrong.

Plan Ahead: Lights, Camera, Venice
If a Labor Day barbeque isn't your ideal end-of-summer bash, jaunt over to Venice where, from August 27-September 6, you can experience how Italians celebrate cinema at the 65th Venice International Film Festival.
Sure the city will be swarming with fanny-packin' tourists and parasitical pigeons and you may catch an unpleasant whiff of Venice at low tide but if George, Johnny and Charlize can stand it, I'm sure you can too.

Super World Travelers Still At It, Eh?

While the rest of celebridom convened in Las Vegas last night for the MTV Video Music Awards to watch Britney Spears' "comeback" and other nasty spectacles, our Super World Travelers kept it highbrow at the Toronto Film Festival. Having just picked up a best actor award at the Venice Film Festival for his performance as a famous outlaw in "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," Brad Pitt made like a Maple Leaf and headed to Toronto with Angelina Jolie in tow. (She has no films on the festival circuit right now--she's just around for moral support!)
Maybe they'll take in a concert while they're there?

Keira's Labor Day: A Working Weekend at the Movies

When most of us think of Labor Day weekend, we make tracks toward the beach, the woods or--if you're not going anywhere--the sales at the mall. But why not the balmy shores of Venice? If the Cannes Film Festival is the movie world's Memorial Day, then the Venice International Film Festival, home of the Golden Lion award, is summer's last hurrah. You won't get a tan in all those screenings, but at least you get to see the stars!
Cannes' festival may be better known for its prestige and glamour, but Venice's is actually the oldest in the world, founded way back in 1932. Because they're closer to our traditional Oscar season, they often pick up prestige films that aren't ready in time for Cannes--like Keira Knightley's latest, "Atonement," a tragic romance set between the World Wars in England.
