Drinking in Utah: It Can Be Done

January 26, 2009 at 11:10 AM | by | Comments (0)

Did you know you can drink in Utah? The Beehive State has a puritanical reputation due to its majority of Mormons, who don't smoke, drink or Starbucks it up, but that doesn't stop you from drinking. And as this weekend's New York Times travel section points out, a little resistance can mean better beer from the state microbreweries.

Writer Vanessa Chang visited several brew pubs, defined by Utah law as a place where beers produced on site are served, and discovered that yes, Utahns do drink beer. Other options for drinking include taverns, which can sell any beer under 4 percent alcohol by volume, restaurants, where beer drinkers must also buy food, or "private clubs" which charge a membership fee to enter their full bars.

The Times recommends Uinta Brewery (1722 S. Fremont Dr. in Salt Lake City) and Wasatch Brew Pub (250 Main Street in tony Park City) for their delicious eats and local brews. So where's your favorite place to drink in Utah?

Marketing Utah, Polygamy Jokes Sold Separately

October 10, 2006 at 10:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

Utah's tourism board recently shelled out $1.86 million to various tourism entities around the state. It's no big shock that Park City, home to the Sundance Film Festival, received the largest chunk of bread so far--about $465,000. But what else does Utah want to sell you on?

Ogden and St. George are both on the list, the former as an adventure destination and the latter as a golfing destination. Salt Lake County also wants skiers and snowboarders from New York and New Jersey. Not on the list: anything having to do with cruising SLC for a second wife, though we knew it was on your mind.

In related news, the board has pledged $250,000 in separate funds for promotion of a potential SLC-CDG (that's Salt Lake City to Paris' Charles de Gaulle) air route on Delta. A Delta spokesperson called Utah's efforts for the route a "good start," but there is no official word on it yet. Should it work out, there's got to be some sort of amazing "butte" joke waiting to happen.
