Hollywood to Hollywood is Just One of This Week's New Routes

May 20, 2011 at 9:02 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· JetBlue:
If you’ve ever wanted to fly from Hollywood to Hollywood now’s the time to do it, as JetBlue has begun flies between the two cities. Well see, technically it’s Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, but both airports are pretty close by to places known as Hollywood. Things started up on May 11 and there were even special guests on hand to welcome the new flights. Lady Gaga and Jane Lynch—or at least their wax museum replicas—were there along with some free tickets to Madame Tussauds is Hollywood (the California one).

· United:
The new United is beefing up its offerings in and out of Houston this week. As the airline starts combining operations and streamlining things with Continental, we can probably expect a few new routes here and there, but also we’re probably going to lose a few that overlap. This week Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Grand Junction, Colorado, and Montreal—you know where that is—all got some new flights to and from Houston. It’s all regional jet service, so don’t expect much—but at least the Montreal route gets some of those kind-of-comfy Embraer E170s.

What's the Deal with Airport Bathroom Attendants?

Where: Charlotte-Douglas International Airport [map], Charlotte, NC, United States
April 11, 2011 at 4:44 PM | by | Comments (2)

Airport washroom attendants. Yes, they do exist. Don't be frightened when you enter the bathroom at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, because there will be an airport employee there to greet you, guide you to an available stall, and even pump the hand towel machine for you. It's weird and potentially off-putting and no other US airport seems to have this, so what's the deal with them?

The issue of the CLT bathroom attendants is pretty common; even skateboarder Tony Hawk has tweeted about them, and it wasn't until a friend ran into them during a US Airways layover this weekend that we realized how unsettling the unexpected interaction can be. Heck—the best restaurants and five-star hotels with happening lobby scenes don't even use attendants any more. So why this airport?

Tweet for Free from 35,000 Feet for a Chance at $10,000

March 21, 2011 at 9:01 AM | by | Comments (0)

Get ready for an influx of college-age kids gumming up the security lines at airports with their forgetting about suntan oil and the 3-1-1 liquids rule, because Spring Break officially gets into gear this week. To celebrate fuller flights to sunnier destinations, Gogo In-Flight internet is allowing free access to Twitter on flights through April 14.

It's already started, so if you've flying select WiFi-equipped routes on AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, United, US Airways or Virgin America then do open up your laptop or turn on your smartphone when you've reached cruising altitude...and tweet about it.

American, Hawaiian, and of Course Virgin America, Lead This Week's New Routes

February 18, 2011 at 2:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Hawaiian Airlines:
It seems that Hawaiian Airlines’ newest focus is to and from Asia. Their latest destination is Osaka, and they’re planning to start things up on July 12. They just need the formal go ahead from the Japanese government, but we’re thinking that the Japanese version of Uncle Sam will probably be cool with flights to Honolulu. The first flights will be aboard Boeing 767s, but eventually Hawaiian Airlines will be dispatching its new Airbus A330 aircraft on the long haul trip across the Pacific.

· US Airways:
Who wants to go to Quebec City? We do, but not until it gets a little warmer. US Airways is thinking the same, as they’re adding a nonstop option between Philadelphia and Quebec City starting on June 2. Don’t expect anything super comfortable though, as the new flights will be operated with less than thrilling CRJ-200 regional jets—thanks to a little help from Air Wisconsin. So start practicing how to complain about your legroom and general discomfort in French.

Pack Light, as US Airways Hikes Some Checked Bag Fees

February 10, 2011 at 8:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

Watch what you pack next time you fly US Airways, as the airline has just raised some of their checked bag fees. Luckily the price hikes only effect overweight baggage—over 50 pounds per case—plus those who bring more than 2 bags, but it does suck considering that the majority of the stories we've had on US Airways in the last year involve their baggage handling incompetency.

This Month is Now Free Facebook on Flights February, Across Seven Airlines

February 1, 2011 at 11:09 AM | by | Comments (0)

February may be better known as the shortest month of the year, but February 2011 is getting a second title: Free Facebook on Flights Month! Until the 28th, passengers on in-flight Gogo WiFi-equipped planes on Virgin America, Delta, AirTran, American Airlines, US Airways, United and Alaska Airlines will be able to access Facebook for free, at 35,000 feet.

Typically with Gogo in-flight internet, you'd be able to check out the airline's homepage for free, but then have to pay for a plan, starting at $4.95, to surf the rest of the internet.

The Incandescent Incompetence of US Airways' Outsourced Baggage Recovery Call Center

January 14, 2011 at 6:08 PM | by | Comment (1)

Catch the first half of this lost luggage drama here!

To recap: Last Sunday, US Airways shuffled us through 16 hours, 4 flights, and 2 different airlines to get from LA to DC. The trip was a comedy of incompetence, capped off by the airline losing our holiday-gift-filled luggage. That was extra obnoxious insofar as we specifically asked for the simplest itinerary when we were getting rerouted up and down the East Coast, explicitly because we couldn't afford to lose that bag. But that's not what this post is about.

Instead this story is about how US Airways has seemingly gone out of its way to design the world's worst baggage recovery customer service system. Some of the post is necessarily speculative, since the airline's press office declined to respond to our questions about the location and scope of US Airways' baggage recovery call center. But given how we've personally spent over 100 hours on the phone now with these tools trying to recover our one lost bag, we're pretty confident we've got the basics down.

Here we go...

It's the Two-Year Anniversary of the 'Miracle on the Hudson'

January 14, 2011 at 3:28 PM | by | Comments (0)

Technically tomorrow is the exact anniversary, but tonight's a Friday night and we're looking for an excuse to toast a shot of Grey Goose.

Do you remember where you were when US Airways Flight 1549 from New York-LaGuardia to Charlotte only made it as far as the Hudson River, ditching into the water after bird strikes took out both engines? We do—we were working, but then threw on our boots and walked about a mile in the 10-degree air and slush to get as close to it as possible, just to see the Airbus A320 still floating and being slowly tugged over to the side of the river.

All 155 passengers and crew survived, with only 5 bad injuries despite the fact that they glided on no power, then freaking landed in a freezing river. Last year on the anniversary, they all came back to the city and took a boat out to the spot where they faced one of the most harrowing moments of their lives. There they enjoyed a little party, celebrating the fact that they were alive, thanks to the actions of their calm and quick-thinking pilot Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger. Since there's no such shindig this year, let's look back on what's happened since that historic day:

Travel Rant: US Airways' Incandescent Incompetence with a Single Checked Luggage

January 12, 2011 at 3:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

Some old school US Airways planes

Who doesn't love a good travel rant? Well we're here to make you day with a sweet little rant from Jaunted writer Omri, who had the pleasure of checking a bag and having it lost in transit. It sucks, sure, but then it became a nightmare. Now let's get to the ranting...

Welcome to Part I of our two-part series on the borderline comedic but mindblowingly frustrating experience we're having with US Airways. Last Sunday they were supposed to get us from Washington DC to Los Angeles on a couple of morning flights, with everything being wrapped up by about 10am. Fast forward to 7:30pm Sunday night and we've gone through four flights at three airports on two airlines, all over 14 hours...and the airline lost our luggage. The emphasis is on lost because—had they merely delayed our luggage—we wouldn't need two different posts to peel back the many layers of airline incompetence on display.

But we do need two posts, because this has been such a learning experience and—if we here at Jaunted are about anything—we're all about learning. So today we'll go over what happened and the things we learned about the airports we "visited." And on Friday we'll dive into our in-depth investigation of their baggage recovery policy, complete with stonewalling by US Airway's press people. Preview: outsourcing baggage recovery services to India is fun for everyone, except anyone who loses baggage.

US Airways, Cape Air, and a Double Dose of Delta are This Week's New Routes

January 7, 2011 at 11:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Delta:
If you’re looking to get outside Providence—ha, we’re so funny—Delta is the airline that can help you out. Rhode Islanders looking to depart from TF Green will now have more options in 2011. There’s three new daily flights to Washington National Airport, but that’s not where the new routes end. Connect anywhere in Delta’s network thanks to additional service to both Detroit and Minneapolis. It’s not as exciting as a new transatlantic option from the airport, but with a connection in Detroit, all of Asia is only one-stop away.

· Cape Air:
We have to admit we thought that Cape Air was all about flying to warm weather New England destinations like Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, but they’ve got plenty of other places to visit. Last month the airline increased its number of destinations by adding new flights to Missouri, Maine, and even Anguilla. Unfortunately the British West Indies flights are only available from Puerto Rico, so we hope we didn’t excite those from Maine looking for a winter escape. Augusta, Maine and Boston are now connected as well as Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and St. Louis—sure beats driving!

Sully Sullenberger's 'Miracle on the Hudson' Plane to Finally Rest In Peace?

January 4, 2011 at 10:41 AM | by | Comments (0)

Believe it or not, January 15th marks the two-year anniversary since US Airways pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger successfully water-landed his Airbus A320 on New York's Hudson River after a bird strike took down both of the plane's engines. All 155 crew and passengers onboard survived and thus Flight 1549 became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson." Sully retired almost a year ago, but the battered fuselage hasn't yet reached such a peaceful conclusion; it's been up for auction (mainly for parts) since last January, and it may finally have found a buyer.

According to Gothamist, this piece of aviation history could end up in a place where all are welcome to come and see it:

'The Miracle on the Hudson' is Now a Highlight of NYC Harbor Tours

November 10, 2010 at 11:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

This upcoming January 2011, it'll be a whole two years since US Airways Flight 1549 suffered a bird strike just after leaving LaGuardia Airport, which shut down all its engines and forced the plane to land in the Hudson River, with no fatalities. Now better known as "The Miracle on the Hudson," Flight 1549 got the attention of the world, a book deal for its pilot "Sully" Sullenberger, and a vodka party for all the passengers on its first anniversary. But that's not all!

While walking down 6th Avenue in Manhattan the other day, we did a double-take when a NY Waterways bus drove by, and we spotted an advertisement on its side for the "Miracle on the Hudson." What are they selling? Are they actually trying to make some money off this accident? You see, the NY Waterways ferries were the first responders on the scene when the plane dropped in the drink, as they were making their usual rounds Hudson River trips between New Jersey and Manhattan. So now, apparently, the ferry company is trying to take their hero role to the bank.
