SkyMall Pillow Solves Age-Old 'Breathing While Asleep' Problem

When we first saw this picture we assumed it was a posture-fix for people who get so drunk on the plane they pass out as soon as they get to the hotel (don't judge - we've all been there). But it turns out that the 22-in Relax 'N Nap Traveler is a patented system for ensuring you breathe fresh air while you're asleep. Quote: "Patented 'air portal' ventilation system allows you to rest face down in comfort while breathing fresh clean air."
Getting air while you're sleeping apparently counts as a problem now, and this is apparently the solution.

Would You Wear Pool Floaties On A Plane If It Meant Better Sleep?

Time for another "comfortable inflatable pillow or absurd monstrosity" post, wherein we weigh the marginal benefit of a cozier trip vs. the marginal cost of publicly looking like a tool. Today's subject: child pool floaties as in-flight pillows, the suggestion of MIT blogger Star Simpson. You inflate them at the airport, slip them around your hands, and ostensibly enjoy a snug respite.
Simpson doesn't suggest you carry around regular naked floaties into airports at least. Instead she makes the critical suggestion that you wrap them up in an old t-shirt. Inspired, but it still doesn't solve our central concern, which is that you're walking around an airport wearing pool toys.

Leonardo DiCaprio: King of the Travel Pillows?

Despite what we may think about some of the new-fangled Travel Pillows out there on the market, it seems that the good old-fashioned neck pillow remains the most popular.
Leonard DiCaprio, taking a vacation from filming in Paris, was spotted at the Nice airport in France with him mom and with his travel neck pillow attached to his backpack. We're just happy he wasn't still wearing it after deplaning, like this passenger did. And thank god it's not a Komfort Kollar.
Interested in buying a travel pillow? Brookstone, a store that sells stuff you really don't need but is ever-present at airports and stocked with travel gear, sells a Tempurpedic Transit Pillow for $75. Flight 001 has a cheaper one for $16. Or you can upgrade to a vibrating neck pillow for $34.

Mischa Barton is Tempted Again...By a Travel Pillow

Mischa Barton has had a rough go of it lately. First, there was incessant scrutiny about her cellulite from the press. Then came a very public DUI arrest. Even losing her "extra" poundage didn't seem to help her image or suffering career as her partying habits started to spiral out of control.
Just the other weekend, she pulled "a Britney" and was placed on an "involuntary psychiatric hold" at a Los Angeles medical center. After a few days, she was released and sent back to work on an upcoming CW show called, The Beautiful Life in which she plays a down and out model.
Because that's a lot of drama to endure--heck, we still can't function normally after a wild Friday night out---we'll have to forgive her for contemplating a fellow passenger's travel neck pillow after arriving in JFK on a flight from Los Angeles.
Mischa, we strongly hope you make the smart decision and just say "No" to this silly type of travel pillow but you know, we all make mistakes sometimes. At least it's not a Komfort Kollar. Also, note to self: do not stand next to celebrities getting their picture taken at the airport after a long cross-country flight. You could be photographed by the paps!

Komfort Kollars Support Your Neck On Flights, Make People Point And Laugh At You

On Skymall there's a picture of this monstrosity and then next to it there's a dropdown box labeled "Select Your Style." Everything else aside, do you think they're using "style" facetiously?
The Komfort Kollar was designed by "a leading spinal surgeon" who promises that it will "support your cervical spine from every angle." It's not often that you come across bondage gear endorsed by medically licensed professionals so in a way this is a sweet deal even if you're not a frequent flier.

Aromatherapy Smells Like Travel Comfort
If there's one thing that's hard to forget when you're on the road, it's how bad other people smell. Chinatown fish markets and sulfurous hot springs are one thing, but 43A's apparent allergy to showering is completely different.
Somehow, when you're in a particularly malodorous spot, the plethora of scented products typically sold under the umbrella of "aromatherapy" start to make a little sense.
Which brings us to the Cocoon Aroma-Therapy Travel Pillow. Provided its lavender scent (a typical soporific, or so we've heard) isn't of the cloying-candle variety, it could be quite pleasant to cuddle up next to on a long flight. At 13"x7" it would fit in a typical carry-on, so it wouldn't pick up any detritus from being carried through airports. And best of all, no inflating! But how long would the scent last?
We'll hold off on the travel pillow for now but we're keeping it in mind for later. Maybe it'd be faster just to soak ourselves in the stuff -- how much could a pillow do?

We Don't Love Air New Zealand Enough to Shave Their Names Into Our Heads
With so much travel news raining down on us, we don't always have time to give every story its own forecast. Here's more of the day's news, in brief.
· Cranial Billboards: Actually, we're guessing this has more to do with love of money than love of Air New Zealand. But still shaving your head, wearing a temporary tattoo for a free flight or $777? Crazy. [NY Times]

This Week's Inflatable Travel Pillow Abomination: The TravelRest

Fashion vs. comfort works a little differently on long travel days. T-shirt, sweatpants, and boots in the office: utterly inexcusable. T-shirt, sweatpants, and boots on an airplane: still utterly inexcusable, albeit moderately less worthy of eternal hellfire. Even on travel days, however, there are limits. We went over one last week when we urged you to eschew the Skyrest. This week: the TravelRest. This masterpiece of contemporary comfort is available for only $27 plus tax plus your self-respect.
One of the following two things is true. Either the TravelRest "has literally stretched the concept of an inflatable travel pillow with its patented ergonomic shape and tethered design" or the TravelRest looks like Klingon battlegear covered with faux velvet so that even Comic Con geeks will laugh at you. Maybe there's a slim chance they're both true. But since it's undeniably covered with faux velvet - are you really willing to take that chance?
For what it's worth, Lisa J from Washington State says that it's "much better than any other travel pillow she's used" and that "the flight attendants on her last flight wanted hers!" Admittedly Lisa J is a generic name put under a generic quote on TravelRest's generic-looking site - still. The pillow also got a real life positive review from CrunchGear. They were especially impressed by the cord that it has, which you can use to tether yourself to your airline seat. If you're into that sort of thing.
Which they apparently are.
