Virgin America's New Summer Sale

4/21/2008 at 10:00 AM
Tags: , , , (all tags)

So, Virgin America is trying to price its way into the hearts of consumers as the legacy airlines are reeling from ever-higher jet fuel prices. Sounds like the perfect time to launch an early summer sale!

Our quick search of some dates in May shows that VA does indeed have the lowest prices between SFO and JFK. (The carrier's about 10 percent cheaper than the best seats on American.) On the new LAX to SEA route, fares on Virgin just edge out Alaska Airlines' prices.

Other routes are on offer, too. The current sale ends this Friday, but as Airfare Watchdog notes, VA has a tendency to extend discounts when people are buying tickets. Like we've said, the first one's always (close to) free.

Hotels Offering Discounts for Stranded Travelers

4/14/2008 at 4:35 PM

We're living in some crazy travel times these days. LCCs are going bankrupt left and right, and bigger airlines are getting grounded for FAA-implemented safety checks. And don't forget about other airline nightmares, like waiting on a tarmac for 8 hours. Just because you book a flight, there's a real chance that you won't get to your final destination in one shot.

Which is why some thoughtful hotels are helping to ease the travel pain (and, you know, send some cash their way as well.) These deals aren't the greatest in terms of flexibility and most of them are at Marriotts, but you may want to make note of these before you head out to catch your next plane.

One last tip: If you see something you like, we suggest calling the hotel and talking to a live human being to get the most out of these offerings.

Thinking about a trip to London? Don't want to fly British Airways and deal with the Terminal 5 baggage nightmare or Naomi Campbell going batshit for no good reason?

Virgin Atlantic has some spring deals on their Premium Economy class from a bunch of American cities to London.

For instance: Los Angeles to London is $464 one-way from Apr 24-May 25. Over the summer (until Sept. 3), the price jumps to $634 one-way. From Newark, the deal is much cheaper at $314 one-way from April 24-May 25. ($464 one-way over the summer.)

Sydney's Animal Life Gets Cheaper

We feel like Sydney's tourist attractions have been getting more and more expensive in recent years, so we're quite pleased to see a decent discount deal coming out for the Sydney Wildlife World and the Sydney Aquarium. They've just joined forces to create a "Discovery Pass" which gives you a discount of around 20 percent if you head to both of them, as long as your visits are within three months of one another.

After considering shark sightings at the Aquarium, we're keen to get back there soon; the koalas at Sydney Wildlife World have such a massive cute factor they're pretty much irresistible.

The new deal means an adult pass for both places is now A$46.50 ($43), more than a $10 discount. That more than makes up for the unfavorable exchange rate for those traveling on US dollars. Come on, those Sydney sharks are waiting to smile at you.

Iceland Express Hates Robbie Williams

Another birthday today, this time for Iceland Express, our favorite Icelandic airline. It's just turned five, and the carrier's got a special offer to entice people to Iceland to celebrate.

If you live in or are traveling through London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Barcelona or Alicante, you can get tickets to Reykjavik for just £53 (around $100). At Iceland Express, you can even book the kind of seat you want--window or aisle, for example--at the same time as you book your ticket.

We've been big fans of this airline ever since the How Do You Like Iceland? blog started giving tips on getting an Icelandic boyfriend. Right now they have a post about being an official Friend of Iceland, an honor so far bestowed upon Harrison Ford, Ryan Philippe and Damon Albarn.

What caught our attention is the fact that Robbie Williams is an Enemy of Iceland, after a scandalous visit when his bodyguards shoved Icelandic journalists and Robbie himself walked out of his own show after twenty minutes because a water bottle had landed on stage. So if you make it to Iceland on the cheap, don't expect to see Robbie there.

Adventures of Link: Saving You Some Cash

We see more than our share of airfare deals every day, but this week might set some kind of record. There are heaps of super-cheap fares out there right now. Most of these bad boys need to be booked in the next few days, so if anything looks good, don't wait.

Delta is serving up some low fares from Atlanta and New York. Think round trip from LGA to New Orleans for $224 all-in.

And Southwest has some one-way fares as low as $29, with lots more tickets going for $49 one-way. (You can even book 'em if you're a cutie.)

Virgin America Fires Up Yet Another Fare Sale

1/08/2008 at 9:48 AM
Tags: , , , (all tags)

It sorta seems like Virgin America is always having a fare sale, which would get a little tired if it weren't for the ridiculously low prices the airline consistently offers. The latest deals on round trips will get you, for example, from JFK to SFO for $277 all-in, from IAD to LAX for $257 or from LAX to SFO for $109.

VA is offering the best prices on January flights out of JFK, according to Kayak, and nobody has lower fares on the LAX-SFO route. Some airlines are offering lower prices out of Washington, DC, but when VA's not the cheapest, we're only talking about a tiny difference in fare. If you've been wanting to try the new airline, tickets will only cost you about $15 more than the competition's.

You'll have to buy your sale tickets by this Friday, but the sale fares are good until March 12. The Virgin America website, of course, has all the fine print.

Adventures of Link: It's $&@^?#% Cold Outside

So, we've basically slogged through the day with cracking fingers, steaming mugs of hot chocolate and a wool knit cap on. Our heater broke in the middle of the night and we might as well fly to Reykjavik--it's actually warmer there than it is in New York.

While we consider that intimate getaway, we've also been looking around the web for some vicarious relief. You might guess that the airlines would charge outrageous prices for tickets out of frozen wastelands, but it turns out there are some good deals floating around. God knows we wanna take advantage of them--though we'd have to brave the cold to get to the airport.
