The 2012 Destination of the Year is...

Where: Santiago, Chile
December 31, 2012 at 5:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2012 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics. Needless to say, we're ready for 2013, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2012 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Every year at this time we're forced to look back on our travels to choose one place, just one place, we loved so much that it gets our highest recommendation. Last year, that honor fell to Bangkok, Thailand. For 2012, we're hopping to another continent across the world to declare Santiago, Chile as 2012's Destination of the Year.

Why? Well, there's the usual stats we could list, like how it's been ranked the safest city in South America and how it's a hotspot for creative and tech companies expanding their international offices, but it's really as simple as this: the city is freaking awesome and we enjoyed every little bit so much that we went twice in 2012 on our own, spending some weeks there to get a good feel for the place.

And any country that offers helicopter bungee jumping above a volcano...we want to go to there.

There are plenty of perks to being 007 - the cars, the women, and, of course, the travel. Star Daniel Craig took it all in stride this year as he crisscrossed the globe twice, once to film Skyfall, and then again to promote it.

In January, Craig began filming the latest James Bond flick in London, moving on to the Highlands of Scotland, but not before having a drink with George Clooney.

There were dozens of movies released in 2012 that inspired audiences to travel, but none more or with stronger travel brand tie-ins than The Hobbit.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and The Lord of the Rings movies before it have created a new, booming tourism industry for New Zealand, where they were filmed.

Tourism New Zealand has embraced the movies and now proudly welcomes visitors to "Middle-earth" in airports, hotels, and on their website. They've also created one, two, and three-week excursions where Hobbit fans can visit filming locations across the country, including Hobbiton and the Weta Workshop in Wellington where many of the movie's props and special effects were perfected.

The Best New Airline Route of 2012 is...

There were so many great new airline routes this year that we figured we should pick one of them as our favorite by adding this award to the bunch. However, there’s so many good ones that the decision was a difficult one. Non-stop between New York-JFK and Palm Springs was a recent favorite, plenty of 787 flights to here and there launched, and who could forget the new option between Denver and Grand Forks, North Dakota. Sure we might be kidding about the last one, but when it's about new routes we love ‘em all.

As for the very best, we’re going with the start of the new non-stop option between New York-JFK and Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines. Sure there was (and still is) a non-stop option with United over to HNL from Newark, but a little competition has brought fares down. Not to mention the fact that JFK is just so much more convenient to those who call New York home.

The Best Domestic Airline of 2012 is...

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2012 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics. Needless to say, we're ready for 2013, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2012 with the Jaunted Travel Awards—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

This is a toughie. Or it would be, had not something happened today to help our decision. Virgin America became only the second US airline ever to be awarded 4-star status by Skytrax. So, yeah, by now you've probably guessed that Virgin America is our 2012 Best Domestic Airline.

Past winners have included JetBlue (2010) and Delta (2011), but VA takes this cake while also celebrating their own fifth anniversary.

There's a whole host of reasons Virgin America kicked ass in 2012 and we've bulletpointed them below, but specifically we loved them for continuing route expansion while never compromising service or style, and keeping their chins and wings up although they're not exactly the most profitable airline. Their social media interaction remains tops, they've launched aggressive stabs at stealing business travelers away from other airlines, and they frickin' made an airplane-shaped donut.

The Wackiest TSA Tale of 2012 is...

Before we begin let's take a second to review the criteria we use for awarding the annual "Wackiest TSA Tale" Jaunty. It's not about what TSA story was the most politically salient in any given year, or the most objectively outrageous, or the most gratingly predictable. And it's certainly not about what TSA story was the most talked about on feverish conspiracy theory forums, from whence come emails to us that go "nu-uh TSA isn't letting snow globes on airplanes because I work in the snow globe industry and all real snow globes are still banned and you should do the research on snow globes before you publish lies to make the TSA look good" (true story, by the by).

No. As we explained last year when we handed out the award, this category is the one that tries to get at the essence of the TSA. What makes the agency that agency. What sets up everything else that happens later, from the lack of transparency to the abuse of power to the bumbling media strategies? Answer: borderline-comic incompetence, usually in the context of spending lots of money.

This may have been the year of airline comings-and-goings, but with the goings come the...you get the idea.

This year, the award for the best newcomer goes to Scoot. The long-haul LCC caught our attention from its first announcement and kept that interest with aggressive and fun social media campaigns until they sped down the runway for the first time, from Singapore to Sydney.

Ever flown to Liberia, Costa Rica? If no, you should because now they've finally got an airport capable of handling the flood of tourists and international flights heading to this gateway city to the country's spectacular Pacific coast.

We've seen a good number of innovative ideas revolutionizing travel in 2012. For two years in a row however, this award has revolved around technology and that dang internet. This year, we applaud an airline for thinking outside the box to fill planes with happy passengers.

The Sweetest Airfare Deal of 2012 is...

Cheapy-cheap mistake fares are great and everything but they're rarely reliable, so for our Sweetest Deal we turn to one offered by an airline itself, with guaranteed prices and guaranteed travel. The honor goes to Singapore Airlines and their recurring A380 to Frankfurt or Singapore fares from New York.

The Naughtiest Flight Attendants of 2012 are...

This year, real life flight attendants were on their best behavior but, luckily for us, the fictional ones made up for it!

The stewardesses (as they were known back in the day) on ABC's short-lived soapy drama Pan Am had enough naughty secrets under those crisp blue uniforms and girdles to make us long for the days when flying was glam.

The Most Ridiculous Airline Idea of 2012 is...

December 28, 2012 at 3:16 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2012 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics. Needless to say, we're ready for 2013, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2012 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

You guys, we swear weren't going to do it. We weren't going to give away this award to Spirit Airlines. The deeply hatable LCC—unaffectionately known to Jaunted readers as the Ryanair of North America—was just too predictable a choice. Also it had already won the award in 2010. Also we had spent plenty of time during the year pointing out its absurdity. Why not change things up a bit for the holiday season, we figured?

Then we flipped through Jaunted's bad ideas category. It's not even close. Spirit dominates. And since you can't argue with math, here we all are. The 2012 Jaunty for Most Ridiculous Airline Idea goes to Florida's Spirit Airlines, which this year took an approach to fees that we're pretty sure we've never seen before: openly, petulantly, explicitly telling customers that they were being punished with fees for their own good.
