Feeling Turin's Aura One Last Time

Where: Turin, Italy
February 27, 2006 at 10:05 AM | by johnrambow | 0 Comments

The Olympics are over, and it's time for all of us to put those lowcut spangled TV-watching outfits away for another four years. But before you do, check out the Washington Post's hilarious awards for Olympic Oddities, which include "Venues That Sound Delicious" (Cesana Pariol, anyone?) as well as some good Johnny Weir quotes:

Gold: "I never felt comfortable in this building. I didn't feel my inner peace, I didn't feel my aura. Inside I was black" (after finishing a disappointing fifth in men's figure skating).
Silver: "I could very likely wake up and feel horrible, like Nick Nolte's mug shot" (before skating his long program).
Bronze: "I dragged myself out of bed, had my Starbucks, put on my self-tanner and went from there" (after winning the national title last month).

Japanese Prefer Their Skaters Nekkid

Where: Japan
February 22, 2006 at 8:50 AM | by johnrambow | 0 Comments

The Winter Olympics have been a complete bust for Japanese broadcasters, presumably because the nation's teams have had such a poor showing -- the worst in decades. What could be a better response than to put a naked Chinese ice-skater on TV? She's very graceful! And probably chilly.

The Unassailable Greatness of Parties, Torino 2006 Edition

February 20, 2006 at 1:10 PM | by AVB | 1 Comment

As we established here a few weeks ago, Super Bowl parties are awesome by dint of their very existence. The presence of scantily-clad ladies doesn't hurt, either. So once-in-four-years Olympic parties are therefore even more awesome, no?

Maybe not. As exhibit A, we have this video of Canadian hockey fans celebrating after their victory against Germany last week. They are enthusiastic. And they have a scantily clad lady. Unfortunately, they also have old people, and hats shaped like maple leafs.

Unless this video is from before Kid Rock's arrival, we're holding onto our tickets for next year's Playboy party.

The Definitive Bode Miller Test

Where: 12 Snowmass Road [map], Crested Butte, CO, United States, 81225
January 30, 2006 at 1:56 PM | by markj | 0 Comments

Earlier this month skiing phenom Bode Miller told 60 Minutes:

There's been times when I've been in really tough shape at the top of the course. If you ever tried to ski when you're wasted, it's not easy.

Now the folks over at Noobsports have taken Bode to task, scientifically speaking.

According to the noobsports site, yesterday, a test subject apparently ski'd three runs  of varying difficulty at Crested Butte Mountain Resort first sober, then wasted (defined as six drinks in two hours). The site promises to post digital photos as well as a detailed answer to their thesis: Is skiing wasted hard?

noob claims there is ample opportunity for a "Sonny Bono moment" if skiing wasted does turn out to be that hard.

We are still waiting for the results to be posted, then we will know once and for all if skiing wasted is a good idea or a bad idea--um, wait, we think we already know the answer to that.

Next question.

Olympic Hotel Rooms, Tickets--All Still Possible

January 25, 2006 at 2:36 PM | by markj | 0 Comments

More last minute Torino accommodation, courtesy of the Olympic elves.

Dream of Italy is offering a constantly updated list of planes, trains, automobiles, and of course hotel rooms in and around the Olympic games.

Yet another sign that it isn't too late to snag tickets and a room to the winter games, even at t-minus 15 days till torch lighting.

But what we really want to know is--Turin or Torino?

Thanks Kathy!
