Obsess Over The Beatles 'Eight Days a Week' on The Tribute Cruise

February 3, 2010 at 1:29 PM | by | Comments (0)

Were you curious about Oxford University's mini-program this summer featuring an entire class on The Beatles? but want something less academic and stuffy? The Beatles Tribute Cruise has come to your rescue.

The cruise will set sail on March 28 for one week, departing from Fort Lauderdale and making stops in Belize and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico. And it's bound to be populated by the middle-aged versions of fanboys and girls.

The cruise will feature some of the most important people on the fringes of the Beatles stardom like May Pang, Yoko Ono's assistant who famously hooked up with John Lennon on his "Lost Weekend" in LA. Additionally, Paul Saltzman, the photographer who captured the Beatles during their retreat to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in India will be cruising as well as Shannon, the Beatles artist who did all the artwork at the Hard Day's Night Hotel in Liverpool.

And of course, a tribute band called BritBeat that hails not Liverpool, but from Chicago:

Sometimes you just have to get away to nurture your artist's soul and allow yourself to refill that well of inspiration from which you draw daily. Follow in the footsteps of these famous artists by visiting the places they loved and were stirred by in life.

· The Roman Ruins in Arles, France -- Vincent van Gogh was Dutch by birth but completed some of his best work in this southern city, where his paintings gained the brilliant color he was famous for. The amphitheater in Arles is far more accessible than the Colosseum for budding painters.

California's Amoeba Records Stores Partying With The Beatles Tonight

September 9, 2009 at 1:23 PM | by | Comments (0)

Its 9-9-09 and it might as well be the universe's Official Beatles Day. The entire catalog of The Beatles songs have been released on remastered CDs (the set is a hefty $260) and The Beatles Rockband is now in stores ($59 for the game, $249 for the game and Beatles-inspired instruments).

Brooklyn Nomad has put together a great list of places in the world that were important to The Beatles But if you're stuck in California and can't just hop on a plane to India, Liverpool, Montreal, Hamburg or London, then consider popping into one of the Amoeba Records stores in either Hollywood, San Francisco or Berkeley.

Amoeba is an old-school, independent record store that (we hope) will never go out of business. In Hollywood, it's located next to the ArcLight Theater on Sunset Boulevard. It's a two-storey building packed with new CDs, used CDs, some new vinyl, a lot of old vinyl and really, anything music-related. And don't think its just for hippies and rockers. They totally sell Mariah Carey CDs too. (Shhhh....)

And today, the stores are having an all-day long Beatles party!

Commencement Travel: That's Doctor Silver Hammer to You

May 28, 2008 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Former Beatle and recent divorcé Paul McCartney just got an honorary degree from Yale University. Those robes just make everyone look better!

And there's no rest for the other weary stars working the commencement circuit. Harvard has invited Harry Potter author JK Rowling. After last year's backlash about "Lost" actor and alum Matthew Fox, Columbia University went the straight-and-narrow and picked New York City school superintendent Joel Klein--only to see sister school Barnard College nab Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

President Bush is doing double duty this weekend at the US Air Force Academy and Furman University in Georgia, and tiny Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois continued its tradition of getting high-wattage speakers by snagging Madeline Albright. (Both Bill Clinton and Stephen Colbert have spoken there in recent years.)

If you want to chase down your favorite star, USA Today has a great list. Stay tuned for our report from Planet Oprah in June!
