Brits Interested in Germany's Bottom Line
Showing that they're still classy after all these years, the British tabloids have published photos of German Chancellor Angela Merkel changing into her bathing suit during an Italian vacation. Rwoar!
On Monday the Sun first showed what Spiegel calls the "partly exposed buttocks" of the chancellor. What was the caption? "I'm Big in the Bumdestag," a pun on the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament. Britain's Daily Sport followed up with some photos of their own.
The German press and public seem to be united in finding this all tacky in the extreme: a columnist for the Bild, called the Sun "rotten to the core" and claimed that "We will sweep you away at the World Cup ... revenge is sweet, you will weep yet." Some Brits, however, see the extra, er, coverage as a slight positive, a sign that Merkel matters. Roger Boyes, a correspondent for the London Times, went so far as to call it a "perverse compliment."
