Table Crashing :: Fit for Genghis Khan (Or Your Parents)

Our latest restaurant review comes live from Annabel Ross in London...
I come from a meat and potatoes kind of family. Don't get me wrong, Mum's been known to make the odd lasagna--and a damn good one at that--but that's about as exotic as it gets at my house. So you can imagine the look on my parents' faces when I took them to the Mongolian Barbeque.
Situated in the heart of Covent Garden in London's thrumming West End, the Mongolian Barbeque is a delightful addition to the plethora of ethic cuisines already available in the area. The sprawling space is decorated with lanterns, masks and wall hangings, and the huge metal hot plate where all the action happens is said to be based on the upturned shields used for cooking by Mongolian warriors in the days of Marco Polo.
Somehow we missed out on the "grill chef's witty repartee," as vaunted on the website, but the staff were nonetheless friendly and attentive. Meals are cheap as chips, with a self-styled approach. You choose your protein, vegetables, spices and sauces and the chefs sauté it into a stir-fried sensation, with rice and noodles on the side. At just £15 ($30) for an unlimited buffet, including starters, it's quite reasonable for London. Even my unadventurous parents were pleasantly surprised--even though meat and potatoes weren't on the menu.

Table Crashing :: Where Tom and Katie Eat

Last Friday, we hit up another one of LA's hot restaurants, Cut by Wolfgang Puck at the The Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. The restaurant opened in June 2006 and was quickly made a favorite amongst Hollywood A-listers like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and whichever celeb couple they're courting for Scientology.
Much like Craft Los Angeles, getting a reservation here takes a lot of work. So we settled for a 9pm time which on a Friday night wasn't that bad. At least we got in.

Table Crashing :: Craft Los Angeles

Last week we bravely decided to walk into Craft Los Angeles without a reservation--gasp! We had tried twice before to set up reservations for dinner--once by calling the day before, second by calling the day of--and we were told both times that the place was completely booked solid. Full. Packed. Totally hopeless.
The last time we called, a nice woman on the other end said that there's always the possibility of walking in and getting a seat at one of the bar tables which serves the full menu. So we heeded her advice and showed up at Tom Colicchio's Craft on a Wednesday night at 7pm--prime dinner time.
