Chasing 'Lost' Season 5: The Incident
May 14, 2009 at 1:01 AM | 1 Comment

Just where in the world is LOST? Each episode, we're looking at the real and fictional locations of LOST from a travel perspective, and plotting them on our Google map. Be sure to check out all the map points, updated weekly!
This week, it's the big season finale. We have a few spoilers, so don't read any further if you are playing catch-up with your Tivo. Will the Island blow-up? Will Juliet and Sawyer sail off into the sunset in that tin can submarine? Will they ever stop creating more questions? Doubtful. The finale spends a lot of time introducing us to the legendary Jacob -- who looks like any other random guy on the island. The thing is, he keeps showing up in everyone's lives at different points. Everybody has met Jacob at some point in their journey. With all that travel, we sure hope he's banking all those frequent flier miles.

This week, it's the finale of The Amazing Race 14. Eleven teams set out on a race around the world, covering three continents, nine countries and over 40,000 miles in a three week filming period. Eight teams have fallen by the wayside, and only the top three remain in this tight competition. Who has what it takes to cross the finish line and win the million dollar prize?

This week, we get lots of action and less head scratching. We're finally getting some answers, kinda. Last episode, Eloise shot her son, Daniel Faraday, not knowing that he was her son and also from the future. Jack and Kate get dragged into camp, and try to explain their preposterous story -- which Eloise believes. Richard Alpert busies himself at the top of the episode by building a model ship in a bottle. Since we know you've been dying to learn the secrets of building unlikely things inside bottles, you may want to check out eHow's step by step explanation of how to make the magic happen.

With some of the best racing in recent memory, these last few episodes have us amped up for the finish line. Last week, teams ran headlong into a continuation. Jaime and Cara made it first to the checkpoint and were told to keep racing. Margie and Luke were second with Tammy and Victor in third. Kisha and Jen brought up the rear, and instead of being eliminated, were told to keep racing. This week, there's another U- Turn in play, with a spot in the final three at stake. All four remaining teams are strong, competitive and want to win. Who can tough it out long enough to secure a coveted spot racing in the finale?

This week, LOST drops a couple of big bombs, like how Eloise Hawking is Daniel Faraday's mother, and that Charles Widmore is his dad. We can't think of a worse parental combination. So, if it's true, this would mean that Penny Widmore is Faraday's half sister. The episode is titled The Variable, which is a reference to the human beings on the island. The equations remain true, it's the variables that change the outcome.
There are a couple of flashbacks that take us back to Oxford after Faraday has graduated. He and Eloise grab lunch at a local Indian restaurant near campus. If you're in the neighborhood and in the mood for some great Indian food, we found this handy list over at In Oxford Magazine.

We are down to only four teams as we edge nearer to the big finish. After last week's conflict between Luke and Jen, will both teams be able to focus and get beyond it, or with their distrust fuel more ill will? Tammy and Victor have a language advantage, but will their verbal skills be able to help them stay ahead when it comes down to some very physical challenges? It's getting down to the wire and the stakes are getting higher and higher. Which team has what it takes to make it all the way to the finish line to win one million dollars?

Five teams remain after last week's non-elimination. Mark and Michael start off this leg with over three hours of penalty time, and they will have to complete an extra task known as a speed bump. The odds are stacked against them, but on the Race, anything can happen. As we get close to the final three, the competition is heating up, and several teams are reaching their boiling points. Who will be able to manage the stress on the Race to make it into the final two legs?

This week, the focus is all on Miles and his backstory. After a few clips showing him as a boy and then rebellious young adult, we come to find that Dr. Marvin Candle is his father. Although Miles never knew his father in his first life, he has the unique opportunity to get to know him on the island.
Miles also has a gift for seeing dead people -- and by that, we mean he's a ghost whisperer. On an errand for Horace, he and Hurley deliver the body of a Dharma person who had an unfortunate incident with electromagnetism. A metal filling in a tooth came loose and exited his body through the head. Not a nice way to go. It got us wondering what resources there are for emergency dental work abroad. Since medical tourism is all the rage, you might want to check out what Healthbase has to say about dental tourism.

This week, it's all about Ben. Since last week's near-death experience, things just keep getting weirder. We catch a glimpse of life in the Hostiles encampment, which reminds us of rustic camping in the jungle, roughly halfway between M.A.S.H. and Gilligan's Island. Still, if roughing it in the jungle sounds cool, you might want to check out Taman Negara National Park in Malaysia, or Qoyllur Tours, which features ecotourism programs in Peru.

This week, the drama surrounds little Ben and what happens to him after he's shot. It involves Sawyer, a pouty trek through the jungle, and a handoff to Richard Alpert. Also, we see flashes of Kate leaving Aaron with his grandmother before returning to the island. If all of this makes you want more, you might consider heading to Hawaii and checking out a few of the LOST set tours.

Did you hear the one about the busload of Brazilian tourists who plunged into the Amazon and were all instantly eaten alive by piranhas? Or the mythical alligator-catfish hybrid that crawls out of rivers to terrorize Texas teenagers?
If stories like these have ever given you nightmares, or caused you to think twice about that river rafting trip, you might want to check out the new Animal Planet show River Monsters. Host Jeremy Wade, who is billed as "an extreme angler," spends the seven-part series exploring the myths and realities behind the world's most dangerous freshwater fish--swimming with piranhas in Brazil, hunting killer catfish in India, and investigating the case of those alligator-like things in Texas.
