Finally! JetBlue Releases Its First iPhone App: The Full Review

February 3, 2012 at 11:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

Alright. What's the one thing you've been waiting forever for from JetBlue? Duh, in-flight WiFi...besides that. Yes, a freaking iPhone app!

Well, late last night while thoughts of Terra Blue Chips and direct flights to Santo Domingo danced through your heads, the airline's very first iPhone app quietly snuck out into the iTunes app store. It's free of course, and blue and orange, but is it any good?

To keep our opinions short and sweet, yes—it's sooooo good. Like, spread-the-word good. Even if you've never flown JetBlue and don't have any upcoming flights booked, we'd say get the thing for its well-designed flight search and booking (wanderlust fodder right there) and cute little extras, like the ability to use your iPhone photos to create funky postcards, shared straight from the app.

It's Okay to Shop for Holiday Gifts in Airport Vending Machines

December 22, 2011 at 12:07 PM | by | Comments (0)

This may seems like the jankiest holiday gift shopping suggestion ever, but trust us for a moment; airport vending machines are a viable option for Christmas and Chanukah presents. We know because we've seen quite a variety of vending machines in our travels, and felt the pressure to buy last-minute hostess gifts just before jumping on planes.

No terminal has a better variety of random vending machines than JetBlue's Terminal 5 at JFK, but SFO's T2 and Tokyo-Narita are up there as well. What you want to look for are variety machines like the "U*Tique" machine pictured above. It's got everything from Jonathan Adler ceramic salt & pepper shakers to kits from The Art of Shaving, to those sparkly Lady Gaga bud headphones. Some super easy stocking stuffers in there.

A step up is obviously the Best Buy machine, with its iPods, Bluetooth headsets, GPS and gadget cases.

From Central Park to Jurassic Park: JetBlue Flies from NYC to Liberia, Costa Rica

November 21, 2011 at 10:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

On the ground at LIR. Yep, that's actually the name of the plane.

So you want to go to somewhere warm this winter but you're not sure where? Get out a map right now and put your finger on the city of Liberia, Costa Rica because it just happens to be JetBlue's newest route and also is on special at $119 each way if you book before December 1 and travel before February 16, 2012. Not bad...not bad at all.

To understand why this town near the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is so hot, we tagged along on the inaugural flight last week. As usual, JetBlue likes to make a big deal out of their new routes, and so the whole flight was one big party; passengers heading down for birthdays, bachelorette parties or just for a relaxing weekend were treated to breakfast and cupcakes at the gate at JFK, complimentary Costa Rican Imperial beer onboard, in-flight trivia with entire vacation packages as prizes, and—perhaps the best perk of flying on an inaugural—plenty of space to stretch out.

Live from T5: JetBlue Launches Direct Flights to Liberia, Costa Rica

November 17, 2011 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Good morning from New York's JFK Airport! It's not the prettiest day here—46 degrees and gloomy/rainy as it is—but we'll soon be trading it for sun and 76 degrees down south...way down south. You see, today JetBlue celebrates the inaugural direct flight to their 70th destination: Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Costa Rica, and we're hitching a ride.

Why Liberia, Costa Rica? Why the heck not?! JetBlue already serves the country's capital, San Jose, via direct flights from Orlando, but Liberia is closer to the surfing, tubing, beaches and volcanoes of the Pacific coast. Flying into Liberia instead of San Jose means cutting out a 4-5 hour drive to reach these, not to mention that JetBlue will have the only flights from New York-JFK to here. Oh, and today those flights are on sale for $119 each way.

One more thing: Liberia's Airport is having a celebration of its own with the opening of a brand spanking new terminal.

Inside the Historic TWA Flight Center at New York's JFK Airport

Where: JFK International Airport [map], New York, NY, United States
October 17, 2011 at 12:24 PM | by | Comments (3)

For years, the old TWA Flight Center at New York's JFK International Airport has taunted us. Situated right in front of the new-ish JetBlue Terminal 5, the Eero Saarinen-designed masterpiece was so close and yet, so far.

Opened in 1962 and closed in 2001 after TWA went bust and was taken into American Airlines, Terminal 5 is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and undergoing slow renovations (that's what happens when you've got asbestos and close proximity to functioning flights). It's not been open to the public since, save for a few short months in 2004 for an art exhibition. This weekend, however, the Open House New York event flung open the doors for four hours and half the city showed up to check out this historical gem.

Three Excellent French Brasseries Found Inside Airports

June 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Cafe Rouge at LHR T4.

What food do you reach for before hopping on a plane? For many, it's hearty (burgers, pizza, pasta), snacky (chips, candy, chocolate) or healthy (sushi, salads, granola), but what about Frenchy? Don't walk through your next airport terminal so quickly, or else you may miss some of the most interesting airport cuisine out there. Yep—we're talking about French Brasseries.

It's rare to find them, but when you do, we recommend stopping in for some Moulet et Frites, frogs legs, or just a simple Café au lait. Here's three great French Brasseries found at major airports:

· Cafe Rouge at London-Heathrow Terminal 4
Reminiscent of the classic Orient Express trains, Cafe Rouge at T4 is lengthy but thin, with clean lines and subtle art deco touches. Like a proper brasserie, its position makes it ideal for people watching, a sport made all the more intriguing by the fact that you're still before security. Someone awaiting your arrival could always pop up here for a Croque Monsieur and eavesdropping on tearful farewells. Plus, it's open from 5am clear until 10pm. Honorary mention: Chez Gerard in Heathrow's Terminal 3.

A Video Ode to MUJI, Now Through June 12 at JFK's Terminal 5

June 6, 2011 at 3:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

When it comes to modern travel products and—well—any lifestyle products, we're massively enamored with the Japanese brand MUJI. So far, MUJI has only expanded into the US as far as New York City, opening four stores in the last couple years. One of the lucky spots to get a MUJI was JetBlue's Terminal 5 at JFK Airport, and for a few weeks only this month, MUJI is celebrating this location in particular.

From now through June 12, the MUJI To Go shop at T5 will have this video installation located just outside of it, in the terminal food court area. The installation, entitled "FLOW" and crafted by Luftwerk, subtly showcases MUJI's most iconic products, like their raincoat, daily planner journal and colorful pens. We kinda wish this video was available on YouTube as a seamless feature with a calming soundtrack, but we suppose this will do.

If you're flying out of Terminal 5 at JFK on JetBlue in the next couple weeks, keep an eye out for it! And then, yes, join us in the love of MUJI.

'Even More Legroom' on JetBlue Will Also Mean Even Faster Through Airport Security

April 25, 2011 at 10:57 AM | by | Comments (0)

Have you ever flown JetBlue out of T5 at JFK on a Friday or Sunday morning? As spacious and new as that terminal is, all of the passengers departing to vacation destination points unknown quickly clog up the security lanes, dumping their floral-print beach bags on the X-ray scanners and forgetting to take off their flip-flops. It can be so frustrating, especially if you're a business travelers or used to sailing through security here.

Blessedly, JetBlue is about to resolve this problem by using fast track security lanes. According to USA Today, passengers who buy the "Even More Legroom" seats—which can range from $20 to $50 extra each way—will be able to either switch lanes to the fast-track one (at airports that have them) or jump to the front of the line (at airports that don't have the fast track lanes). Here's hoping T5 opens a fast lane of its very own.

JetBlue Will Throw an Irish Celebration This Week at T5 at JFK

March 14, 2011 at 1:28 PM | by | Comments (0)

Live music is back this week at JFK thanks to JetBlue, but this time the music at Terminal 5 will be celebrating the holiday. As always you’ll need to be traveling to get access to the free concert, but you might also want to remember to wear a little bit of green.

Irish recording artist Julie Feeney is hitting the T5 stage live this Thursday—that’s St. Patrick’s Day—in the in the middle of the airport terminal. Aer Lingus and the tourism board of Ireland are partnering with JetBlue to bring passengers this week’s concert, so maybe they’ll even be passing out a few travel coupons or even some prizes like airfare to Dublin—maybe, just maybe?

A Hotel for JFK's Iconic TWA Terminal Would Be Great, but Likely Won't Happen

February 7, 2011 at 11:37 AM | by | Comments (0)

What's the big news on the airport front this morning? Oh, just that New York-JFK could be getting a new hotel...inside of the old, landmark-protected TWA Terminal 5. The building, designed by Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962, is an architectural and design gem of the Mad Men-era, one that has outlasted (and outshined) other similar fancy airport buildings (ah hem Pan Am Worldport).

Anyways, the TWA Flight Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and thus has been able to escape the wrecking ball. JetBlue even went and built their giant, shiny T5 at JFK behind it, but left enough buffer space between the two buildings for contractors to envision a hotel. There's no takers on the project just yet, which would ideally be a high-end, boutique hotel set just behind the Terminal, utilizing the iconic original structure as a sort of juiced-up hotel lobby, and we don't think there ever will be. Here's why:

What a Lovely Day to Fly Over a Cloudless New York City

Where: New York- JFK International Airport [map], New York, NY, United States
December 23, 2010 at 5:49 PM | by | Comment (1)

While most of the country is either covered in snow and ice or heavy rainclouds, good ol' New York City is experiencing something of a rare nice winter weather spell. Usually we'd say that all of those tourists who headed to the city for the holidays will have tough luck enjoying it, but this year our mind is changed by the blue skies, charmingly blustery winds and also a little bit of the knowledge that other parts of the country are suffering under their snowfalls.

And now, in a hypocritical turn, we've jetted out of New York City for the holidays ourselves, taking this lovely picture looking back over our shoulder, down onto the city, the harbor, and the Verrazano Bridge. It's not often that our flight path so perfectly provides such a picture, and it's often just our luck to sit on the wrong side of the plane whenever it does. Alas, yesterday all our stars aligned and we got the snapshot above: the city, pre-holiday, without snow and without clouds. Magical.
