Hot breakfast sandwiches. Free WiFi. A power outlet for each comfy chair. A slick bar stocking all the good stuff for complimentary cocktails. Cheese plates. Private restrooms with showers. Macbooks.
Hello, this is airport heaven.
Though it kinda sounds like we've been describing an ultra-premium airline lounge for elite flyers at some exotic international airport, all this is in fact coming to a new lounge within Terminal 5 at New York-JFK, aka the home of JetBlue. It's to be called Airspace, and travelers will find it come May 2013 after security, near Gate 24.

Okay, travelers. Put on your dancing shoes because supermodel Coco Rocha has just introduced a little dance we're going to call the Airside Slide. Earlier today, Coco announced the airing of the video accompanying her work on the Spring/Summer 2013 campaign for french luxury fashion house Longchamp, and it's in this video that she and another model (Liisa Winkler) boogie down under the roof of the old Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Terminal at JFK Airport.
The premise is simple: Coco's running to catch a flight. She passes through security but keeps beeping. The TSA agent steps out to frisk her, at which point the music starts Coco spontaneously dancing, joined in the moves by Liisa.

During the construction of the TWA Terminal 5 at New York-JFK Airport, architect Eero Saarinen said:
TWA is beginning to look marvelous. If anything happened and they had to stop work right now and just leave it in this state, I think it would make a beautiful ruin, like the Baths of Caracalla.
Of course the lovely irony of that statement is that, though the building was completed and served its full purpose as a bustling airline terminal for decades, the end of TWA and a need for larger, more technologically advanced terminals has turned the structure into exactly what Saarinen had both hoped an fearedthat of a beautiful ruin.
While redevelopment rumors come and go, there's no doubt that the TWA Terminal is an ideal place for movie shootsCatch Me If You Can famously filmed hereas well as fashion spreads.

It might not be as polished and clean as some of those overly planned "flashmobs" at the airport, but when it comes to holiday greetings—JetBlue knows what they doing.
The airline's most festive crew penned a little set of lyrics to the tune of Jingle Bells, and they made it all about what to do at the airport to keep your holiday stress-free. Initially it was just words on paper, but after a request over on Twitter it was time for JetBlue employees to put on their Santa hats and sing for the masses.

Much has been made lately of the newest tech-y addition to airport arrivals halls, those hologram helpers, but up until this weekend we hadn't seen one for ourselves. The entire machine, a sizeable thing, can be found at the transportation help centers, where you may go to ask a question about taxi fares or how to get a bus versus a taxi.
Hologram girl's purpose is to answer the most basic of questions so you no longer have to wait to speak with a human. Except she's not exactly a hologram. A hologram projects an image into open space, a la Princess Leia's "help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope" message beamed out of R2-D2 in Star Wars. Instead, airport hologram girl is a projection onto a person-shaped piece of plexi, which stands a respectable distance out into the baggage claim area as if she is indeed able to help and answer questions.

Off limits. That's sadly how we know the TWA Flight Center at New York's JFK Airport today. No flights fly from it, no passengers check in beneath its departures board, and no cocktails are pushed across the bar of the Lisbon Lounge...any longer.
Unless you're renting out the entire space for a big-budget event or photoshoot (as Banana Republic recently did for their fall/winter 2012 ads), there's no way inside...with the exception of one day when the Flight Center is opened, for free, to the public during the openhousenewyork (OHNY) festival.
This last weekend may have been the 10th anniversary of OHNY, but it's only the second year the TWA Flight Center has participated. The first year obviously went well enough as they extended the hours for 2012, which nicely thinned the crowd to make for ideal photography and a mood that approached conviviality. To put it simply, it just seemed like everyone was truly enjoying being there.

Two vintage uniforms with the current one (at right)
"Today we united the two best cities in the countryNew York and Honolulu. We'll have you on the beach, Mai Tai in hand, on the same day."
These words come from Mr. Mark Dunkerley, CEO of Hawaiian Airlines and the smilingest person last night at the party to celebrate the start of the airline's first flight between JFK and HNL. Of course he'd say this, since it's not only his airline, but his party and his Airbus A330-220 widebody that'll be zipping tropics-minded passengers on the long 10-hour flight.
Still, the start of this route marks a historic occasion for the airline and JFK airport, since Hawaiian has been around since 1929 and never before pulled their purple tail in a gate in the Big Apple. Now you'll be able to find the purple tail sticking out from the field of blue at JetBlue's T5 at JFK.

The recent demolition of Terminal 6
Remember when Terminal 6 at JFKthat's the old I.M. Pei-designer building for National Airlinescame tumbling down last October? The structure had been abandoned for years, since JetBlue moved from T6 over to their newly built Terminal 5 in 2008, so it's not like JFK was impacted by the bulldozing of it.
In fact, the plot of land between Temrinals 5 and 7 is a blank slate, prime airport property for the taking...and JetBlue has already snatched it up with approval to build another terminal: T5i. What's that extra "i" stand for? Oh, just "international," as JetBlue's international routes will be based out of this future terminal.

Alright. What's the one thing you've been waiting forever for from JetBlue? Duh, in-flight WiFi...besides that. Yes, a freaking iPhone app!
Well, late last night while thoughts of Terra Blue Chips and direct flights to Santo Domingo danced through your heads, the airline's very first iPhone app quietly snuck out into the iTunes app store. It's free of course, and blue and orange, but is it any good?
To keep our opinions short and sweet, yesit's sooooo good. Like, spread-the-word good. Even if you've never flown JetBlue and don't have any upcoming flights booked, we'd say get the thing for its well-designed flight search and booking (wanderlust fodder right there) and cute little extras, like the ability to use your iPhone photos to create funky postcards, shared straight from the app.

This may seems like the jankiest holiday gift shopping suggestion ever, but trust us for a moment; airport vending machines are a viable option for Christmas and Chanukah presents. We know because we've seen quite a variety of vending machines in our travels, and felt the pressure to buy last-minute hostess gifts just before jumping on planes.
No terminal has a better variety of random vending machines than JetBlue's Terminal 5 at JFK, but SFO's T2 and Tokyo-Narita are up there as well. What you want to look for are variety machines like the "U*Tique" machine pictured above. It's got everything from Jonathan Adler ceramic salt & pepper shakers to kits from The Art of Shaving, to those sparkly Lady Gaga bud headphones. Some super easy stocking stuffers in there.
A step up is obviously the Best Buy machine, with its iPods, Bluetooth headsets, GPS and gadget cases.

Our favorite Upper East Siders are trading in the streets of Manhattan for the baggage claim at JFK today.
That's right, the cast of Gossip Girl is expected to shoot several scenes around the Terminal 5 baggage claim at JFK International Airport later this afternoon.

On the ground at LIR. Yep, that's actually the name of the plane.
So you want to go to somewhere warm this winter but you're not sure where? Get out a map right now and put your finger on the city of Liberia, Costa Rica because it just happens to be JetBlue's newest route and also is on special at $119 each way if you book before December 1 and travel before February 16, 2012. Not bad...not bad at all.
To understand why this town near the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is so hot, we tagged along on the inaugural flight last week. As usual, JetBlue likes to make a big deal out of their new routes, and so the whole flight was one big party; passengers heading down for birthdays, bachelorette parties or just for a relaxing weekend were treated to breakfast and cupcakes at the gate at JFK, complimentary Costa Rican Imperial beer onboard, in-flight trivia with entire vacation packages as prizes, andperhaps the best perk of flying on an inauguralplenty of space to stretch out.
