The Most Improved Airport of 2011 Is...

December 29, 2011 at 12:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2011 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2012, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2011 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Plenty of new airport restaurants arrived in terminals and concourses this year, and some airports are even getting brand new television shows once 2012 rolls around. However, there’s one airport that stands above the rest as the most improved. It’s not Minneapolis-St. Paul—although we do love us some MSP—nor is it Reagan National Airport despite its addition of a nine-foot tall statue of its namesake.

We’re picking San Francisco International Airport as the most improved airport of 2011.

[Note: we've only seen the ladies room]

The cleaning lady thought we were crazy taking pictures inside a restroom, but the public restrooms at Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport are actually something to write home about.

Flattering lighting, stools in the makeup room and—boy oh boy—Dyson Airblade hand dryers? Be still our frequent flying hearts!

A First Look Inside SFO's New Terminal 2, On the Brink of Its Debut

February 11, 2011 at 12:11 PM | by | Comment (1)

How excited should you be for the projected Spring opening of the new Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport? So excited! It's actually renovation, but a $400 million dollar one, complete with unique new features like "hydration stations," mood lighting, SFO-focused slow food restaurants (as in the slow food movement, not slow service) and modern airport standards like free WiFi and outlets everywhere.

Virgin America and American Airlines will be taking over the majority of the 14 gates, and the terminal work is finally giving VX the chance to really make the space theirs. They're so thrilled, in fact, that they've been keeping their flyers aware of the coming upgrades via Facebook, and their most recent gallery proves that the place is nearing completion.

San Francisco Airport Reveals a New Collection of Tap Water Machines

January 31, 2011 at 9:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

Ever since liquids were banned through the TSA security line years ago, our airport spending budget has gone up by a few bucks. One of our first stops after putting our shoes back on is scoring a bottle of water—OK, and a gossip magazine—we just need to see who wore it best. Anyway, a little liquid refreshment is just a couple bucks, but it certainly adds up over time.

We try to bring our own empty bottles in order to steal some water out of the water fountain, but sometimes we forget to bring a bottle and sometimes it can seem a little weird. But at last an airport has heard out prayers; San Francisco Airport is installing tap water stations.

San Francisco's Super Innovative Terminal 2 Looking Good for Spring 2011

Where: San Francisco International Airport [map], San Francisco, CA, United States
November 30, 2010 at 3:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

As if the news about Lufthansa's long-haul in-flight WiFi wasn't enough to get you excited for the future of air travel today, then surely this will be: The renovated Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport is shaping up beautifully, with a goal to open in Spring 2011. That means the west coast will finally have an awesomly innovative terminal to rival JetBlue's east coast T5 at JFK (both coincidentally done by the same architecture firm—Gensler).

The main airlines moving into the renovated T2 will be Virgin America and American Airlines, each claiming half of T2's 14 gates. The $400 million+ renovation is being completed with Virgin's design sensibilities, so you can bet on a decidedly modern aesthetic coupled with start-of-the-art technology, dining and shopping.
