Ten Years of Terrifying Climbing in Sydney

Sydney's Harbour Bridge has been carrying people across the water since 1932 but it's only a decade since the Sydney Bridge Climb allowed brave tourists to stand on top of the city's world famous icon.

To celebrate the ten year anniversary of climbing the bridge, the Bridge Climb people organized a bunch of people to climb with their flags to break the world record for "number of flags flown from a bridge" (damn, we really wanted to break that one ourselves).

Apparently the new world record is 137: A neat number that represents the number of different nationalities of the tourists who've successfully scaled the bridge so far. How very intellectual, Sydney.

Brisbane's Got Soft Adventure All Week Long

In for some so-called soft adventure? Brisbane's version of big brother Sydney's Harbour Bridge Climb is the Story Bridge Adventure Climb, an activity proudly advertised as "soft adventure", presumably to attract pretty much every market.

For a couple of years now you've been able to get a pretty spectacular view of Brisbane from the Story Bridge five days a week, but as of September 1, the climbing hours are going to be extended to seven days a week. There will be day, twilight and night climbs every day, with special dawn climbs being offered on Saturdays and Sundays. So if you want to get on top of Brisbane, this little bit of soft adventure is probably for you.

Touching Rivets in Sydney Harbour

If told to think of Sydney, 5 out of 10 people will tell you the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the city's number one attraction. Fewer of those who've made it Down Under will have actually had the nerve to climb what the locals refer to as "the coathanger," a 1439-step climb to the summit of the bridge, where, incidentally, some 1100 marriage proposals have been made.

It seems that BridgeClimb Sydney is about to get even better. Tickets went on sale today for a new version of the adventure, called the Discovery Climb, which takes visitors through the middle of the bridge's structure rather than across its top. A big bonus highlighted by their website is you'll "be able to touch the raw steel and rivets," but it might be that you need an engineering degree to get your kicks from this. Just the same, you still end up 134 meters above the water (just a touch top far to jump), so pick your route, or splash out on both, if you have the nerve.
