There'll Be Delays At Sydney Airport If They Don't Find Some Air Traffic People
Want to fly in or out of Australia's biggest city, Sydney? It could be tricky, because apparently there aren't quite enough people there to guide your plane in to a safe landing.
On Sunday night, a number of flights out of Sydney were canceled and many incoming planes had to fly around for ages before being cleared for landing, because of a shortage of air traffic controllers. Three of the controllers who should have been working called in saying they couldn't come to work (we don't if they were sick, or just had a really good party to go to) and Air Services Australia, who run the tower at Sydney Airport, couldn't find any replacements.

Sydney Airport is Swingin'
Sydney is heating up as a destination, and those in the know figure that international arrivals to Sydney will double in the next 15 years. (Will tourists be visiting for the nice people?) Whatever the reason, Sydney Airport has to get busy making itself bigger to cope with an extra 10 million passengers a year from overseas.
That's why they've just started a A$500 million ($450 million) makeover. One part of the renovation will provide space for A380s to load and unload passengers, and there will also be a redesign of the departure lounge, new baggage handling systems and of course a few more shops to take our final Aussie dollars before we leave the country.

Get Parkin' At Sydney Airport

We nearly got a massive shopping complex built at Sydney's International Airport, until too many people freaked out at the possibility it could get hit by a plane. Now building enthusiasts are getting ready to start a new A$65 million car park instead.
With 10 million people flying through Sydney International a year, it's a busy place, and that's why they've now got 3000 additional parking places coming. Travelators and lifts will connect the car park directly to the Terminal 1 Departure Lounge. For international visitors who don't really need this car park, it might seem a far cry from the previously proposed shopping mall, but there are still plenty of duty-free shops (complete with grotesque anti-smoking ads) where you can hand over your last Aussie dollars.

Australia's Grotesque Anti-Smoking Ads: Collect 'Em All!

This is the sign that greeted us in the Duty-Free store after we deplaned at Sydney Airport. (FYI, the duty-free pushers on Qantas and at the airport are relentless.)
Australia has been on a Quit Smoking blitz for the past few years, and now they have committed at least $25 million for the next four years to educate teens about the dangers of smoking.
Most of this education relies on graphic pictures of the health effects of smoking, which you can see after the jump.
