Jaunted-Approved Hostels in Berlin, Singapore and Mendoza

May 18, 2012 at 1:18 PM | by | Comments (0)

If you're older than 24 and you're still staying in hostels, that's a big shhh no-no. At least that's what society would have you think, however; we'd like to officially come out and say that we're older than 24 and still. staying. in. hostels.

Deep breath. Though the reason for our hostel stays has evolved—they're now backups for when we blow all our budget early on in trips, with 5-star hotels—we're never ashamed.

Having done the whole backpack-around-Europe thing during college, we have a solid past dotted with hostel stays of all sorts. Dirty hostels? Don't get us started on Budapest. Party hostels? Ugh, Barcelona. Plain scary hostels? Look no further than London. Still we haven't given up on them, and we've discovered some real diamonds in the rough, places we'd happily return to (and soon). Oh yeah, and ALL WITH EXCELLENT, FREE WIFI INTERNET AND BREAKFAST. Here's three we've recently stayed at, and personally approve of:

All-Business-Class Flights to Singapore May Become a Thing of the Past

Where: Singapore
April 3, 2012 at 10:19 AM | by | Comments (0)

The allure and glamor of flying between 18 and 19 hours, non-stop, in a super wide business class seat, surrounded by, and nothing but, other plush business class seats may be a story we tell our grandchildren. Singapore Airlines has been considering reverting their all-premium aircraft back to a 2-class cabin with premium-economy class seating.

The sky-rocketing cost of jet-fuel, a turbulent airline industry and low load factors are causing the airline to toss around the idea of adding seats to pack in the passengers a bit more and, ultimately, increase revenue.

Singapore's Scoot Airline Launches with $88, 8-Hour Flights to Australia

Where: Singapore
March 21, 2012 at 10:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Scootitude is getting even more and more intense with the newest (not-so) litte budget carrier of Singapore Airlines. We have already created a lot of hype over the airline, its uniforms, launch cities, and on-board offering. Yesterday, in Singapore, the website opened for business, but not without a little lot of hoopla.

If you have been following the happenings of big yellow Boeing 777s, you will know that there has been much lead up to the introductory pricing of the inaugural flights. In unique fashion, the Facebook page tempted visitors to sign-up for more info. The carrier then challenged it's fans to get as many registrations as possible and with every registration, initial fares would decrease. The more sign-ups, the lower the fares.

Foreign Grocery Friday: The BBQ Stingray of Singapore

Where: Singapore
March 16, 2012 at 6:18 PM | by | Comments (0)

When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we'd never find anywhere else. So we're trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we'll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!

Singapore is a melting pot. It's a melting pot of cultures, a melting pot of architecture styles and, most awesomely, a melting pot of FOOD. When you talk about dishes that are distinctly Singaporean however, you must talk about BBQ Stingray in sambal sauce. Sure, Singapore loves to BBQ other meats and seafood as well, but cooked stingray over charcoal served up slathered in the spicy chili paste—that's often the goal of evening food quests at infamous hawker centres.

'FlyBagEat' and More Funky Terms from Singapore's New 'Scoot' Airline

Where: Singapore
March 8, 2012 at 10:17 AM | by | Comments (0)

Yesterday on the other side of the world, the newest little low-cost airline made a huge step toward actually taking to the skies. Singapore Airlines' budget off-shoot, Scoot, announced how they will be providing low fares to the region. The LCC has come up with creative ways of appealing to many customers while maintaining affordable fares for both short and long haul with several classes of travel.

Since "Scoot-itude" is the focus of their campaigning thus far, we can only expect the naming of other things in their service to be just as wacky. Here is a simple explanation of each of the travel classes:

Hanging Out at Singapore's Changi Airport: Terminal 3's SilverKris Lounge

Where: Singapore-Changi International, Singapore
February 10, 2012 at 6:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

There's a reason Singapore-Changi International Airport consistently wins awards; it's because the place is ah-may-zing. After spending much time at the three main terminals earlier this week, we're sharing with you our favorite, can't-miss bits of this massive travel hub.

Today: The Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge in Terminal 3

Champagne at the ready, showers for the sweaty, hot food for light meals and stylish chairs for resting our heels. These are a few of our favorite things...when it comes to airline lounges and, of course, the Terminal 3 Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge at Changi Airport has it all in spades. In fact, they even have some pretty tasty chicken tikka and if that doesn't prove the quality of the place, then we don't know what does.

Hanging Out at Singapore's Changi Airport: So Many Gardens

February 7, 2012 at 10:24 AM | by | Comments (0)

There's a reason Singapore-Changi International Airport consistently wins awards; it's because the place is ah-may-zing. After spending much time at the three main terminals earlier this week, we're sharing with you our favorite, can't-miss bits of this massive travel hub.

Today: The variety of indoor and outdoor gardens in Terminals 1 and 2

So a weird thing happened while we were at Changi. Well, we were chilling in a cactus garden watching a Qantas 747 taxi around the tarmac when it suddenly began raining in a soaking downpour that nearly ruined our passport. What's odd about this isn't the raining on the cacti, but the fact that all this was happening in an airport.

Changi is a massive airport of four terminals, but only three are worth talking about (the fourth is a tiny terminal for budget, regional airlines). The main three are packed with all kinds of shops, all kinds of eateries, a flume slide, a pool and lovely, lovely gardens:

Foreign Grocery Friday: The Kaya Toast of Singapore

February 3, 2012 at 5:07 PM | by | Comments (0)

When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we'd never find anywhere else. So we're trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we'll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!

It can be tempting while traveling, especially for more than a week or two, to revert back to ordering the comfort foods with which you grew up. This maybe means eggs and bacon for breakfast or something similarly boring. Of course we urge you to overcome the temptation and, instead, take even more to the local menus. In Singapore, this means Kaya Toast for breakfast.

Kaya jam, which can be bought in jars in the grocery store, is a mix of eggs, sugar, coconut milk and pandan leaf. It's spread between two thin, toasted piece of bread and cut to neat rectangles. Adding butter is optional, depending on how decadent you feel.

Yes, it's green, but once you get over that and just bite in, you'll immediately forget the color for the flavor.

Hanging Out at Singapore's Changi Airport: The Outdoor Pool. Yes, a Pool.

Where: Singapore-Changi International, Singapore, Singapore
February 2, 2012 at 5:38 PM | by | Comments (0)

There's a reason Singapore-Changi International Airport consistently wins awards; it's because the place is ah-may-zing. After spending much time at the three main terminals earlier this week, we're sharing with you our favorite, can't-miss bits of this massive travel hub.

Today: The famous pool atop Changi Airport's Terminal 1

Look, you have to believe us when we say that one of the terminals at Changi Airport has a swimming pool. Why? Because, crazily enough, it's true. You'll find the clear blue waters of the outdoor pool above Terminal 1, just follow the "swimming pool" signs and an escalator to reach it.

Technically, this pool (and whirlpool) is part of a hotel in the terminal—the Ambassador Transit Hotel—but it's actually situated across a landing from the hotel reception and, thus, quite easy to check out on your own before paying the $13.91 SGD ($11.15 USD) to actually use the facilities and take a dip.

Hanging Out at Singapore's Changi Airport: Riding the 4-Story Slide

Where: Singapore-Changi International, Singapore, Singapore
January 31, 2012 at 12:56 PM | by | Comments (2)

There's a reason Singapore-Changi International Airport consistently wins awards; it's because the place is ah-may-zing. After spending much time at the three main terminals earlier this week, we're sharing with you our favorite, can't-miss bits of this massive travel hub.

Today: The 4-story flume slide in Terminal 3

The line is full of kids shrieking with joy, their parents looking on with cameraphones at the ready. At first glance, a traveler could think that the slides (yes, there are two slides) at Terminal 3 are for children only, but they're not. They're so not.

In September 2010, Changi Airport debuted the twirly, stainless steel fun tubes, one only as high as a single story and free, the other four stories and requiring a ticket which can be obtained for every $10 SGD spent at an airport store. We stocked up on cheap accessories at one such store and headed to an Information desk to collect our ride—2 rides, since we had spent $20-ish.

Onboard the Singapore Airlines A380: The Little Things

January 26, 2012 at 3:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Jaunted Singapore A380 Series:

1. The Grand Tour
2. The Singapore Girls
3. Eating (and drinking) all the way to Singapore
4. Everything you ever wanted to know about Business Class
5. Design details

Reaching the end of our series on flying the Singapore Airlines A380, it's time to look back and well...just look closer.

Paying attention to the design details means that the airlines will have to pay attention to them as well. And, let's face it, when recounting a particularly great flight, you'll utter a sentence something like this: "Oh, it was so nice...I slept and ate well and they had [detail], [detail] and [detail]!" Personally for us—on the SQ A380—we'd fill those spots with "Givenchy linens," "the cutest stackable salt & pepper shakers," and "an onboard sommelier."

McDonald's Contribution to Chinese New Year: The 'Prosperity Burger'

Where: Singapore
January 26, 2012 at 11:58 AM | by | Comments (2)

Singapore may be like 22 hours of travel away from the US, but that doesn't mean they haven't got 24-hour McDonalds here and there. One we passed today—just off the Esplanade near the Fullerton Bay Hotel—was sporting some flashy banners for limited-time-only eats. Curious, we got closer. Holy shnickeys, they're trying to make a buck off of Chinese New Year with the introduction of four special items: Beef Prosperity Burger, Chicken Prosperity Burger, Twister fries and a Prosperity McFizz.

According to the banners, these babies are only around until January 31. According to the internet, this isn't the first McDs has been cooking "Prosperity Burgers." And just exactly how prosperous are these sammies? Well, the patties are dipped in black pepper sauce, topped with onions and finished with a sesame seed bun. Sounds okay, but none of those ingredients were in the traditional Prosperity Salad. The only thing we can tell is that the twister fries can resemble 8, an auspicious number.
