What Did You Think Of The 'Confessions Of A Travel Writer' Premiere?

Where: 125 West 45th Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10036

Did you catch us on TV last night? The pilot episode of the show "Confessions Of A Travel Writer" aired at 9pm EST yesterday on the Travel Channel, and our Shira Lazar is the sole representative of new media among the five travel journalists starring.

We took in the show from the pool lobby at the Grace Hotel in midtown New York City, where we drank Pisco Sours and patiently waited for them to fix the audio. Alas, they never did and so you at home had a better seat for the show than we did, although we did catch the 11pm re-run.

Find Out What Happens When 5 Travel Writers Get In Front of The Camera

August 10, 2009 at 6:50 PM | by | Comments (11)

Was it really as much fun as it looked?

It's a Monday night during the summer and you've probably got nothing to watch on your DVR except "Weeds" if you're fortunate to have Showtime and those old reruns of "Mama's Family." (Don't lie, you know you watch it.) But there's something a little different coming to your tube today from the Travel Channel, Confessions of a Travel Writer.

This Monday, August 10, at 9 E/P, join Charles Runette and 4 other travel writers on a 7-day trip to Chile. See what happens when personal agendas get in the way of what seems like a dream job.

Full disclosure: Here's why we're interested in this show. Our very own Shira Lazar is actually one of those four other travel writers and we were able to get her reports back from Chile as they were happening. But we never heard anything about those "personal agendas." Maybe tonight's episode will reveal all! For a more in-depth look at the show, check out this interview with Charles Runnette on WorldHum.com.

Jaunted will actually be attending a screening of the show tonight and we will bring you back the full report. But if you manage to catch the show yourself, tell us what you thought in comments below.

The Day in the Cloud Challenge Was Um...Challenging

June 24, 2009 at 5:28 PM | by | Comments (0)

We were able to fly on Virgin America from LAX to SFO this morning for the airline's inaugural Day in the Cloud Challenge--the first-ever online puzzle challenge that can be played in the air and on the ground. We competed against another Virgin America flight using the GoGo in-flight WiFi (which was complimentary to all guests on VA flights today.)

GoGo's WiFi network was understandably overstressed this morning but once we were able to play the game, things did not get easier. These games are actually quite hard! And there was a very cool prize at stake. The two flights were vying to win a free netbook for everyone on the plane.

So how did it end up? Well, we were on the winning flight but we're still not sure how this game works.

Trust us. A juicy burger with teriyaki sauce, swiss cheese and pineapple is delicious (and it's called The Local Boy.) You can find it at Ono's Char Burger on the North Shore. Watch the video to see it up close and learn what ale we washed that tasty burger down with.

Coastin' It Up!

Finally, I get to talk about one of my all-time favorite escapes in Hawaii: Kauai.

This is my fourth time on the island and it never fails to make me zen out and escape reality completely. If you’re looking for the idyllic Hawaii that you may imagine or see in movies and pictures, then look no further.

While we know the North Shore like the back of our hand (not to boast or anything), we did experience one first on this trip: a boat ride along the Na pali Coast, courtesy of Kauai Sea Tours. We had heard this was a must-see and do. The coast is known for its beauty and history, but is also pretty much inaccessible except by kayak, boat or helicopter.

Honolulu Me Please!

We were put up in Honolulu for two nights staying at The Royal Hawaiian, the 3rd oldest hotel in the city. How would we describe the area? Lets just say that when you step out of the hotel and feel like you may be in Beverly Hills with Coach and Gucci stores scattering the streets.

What we found amazing though is that the moment you enter any of the hotels or beaches, you immediately remember that you are indeed in Hawaii and feel isolated from it all. Through our on-land search and with the help of our super twitter community, we discovered some more authentic and local spots you should check out:

Jaunted Featured on The Early Show

June 1, 2009 at 9:44 AM | by | Comment (1)

Watch CBS Videos Online

Jaunted's own Shira Lazar was featured on the The Early Show's travel segment this morning. Shira expertly walked Harry Smith through how social media travel is changing travel experiences -- from real time advice to new channels of customer service.

As with most stories involving travel deals these days, Twitter was the first thing Harry and Shira talked about. While Harry was a little skeptical about tweeting for real time travel info, Shira assured him that on a recent trip to Hawaii, local Twitterers came through with excellent advice for things to do and places to go. Same thing goes for tweeting about where to stay. Hotels are on Twitter and are reaching out to folks with hotel discounts.

Shira then ran through three Jaunted-approved travel websites--TripIt.com, Dopplr.com and CouchSurfing.com. Not quite sure we can see Harry Smith hitting up someone's couch in the future but at least he knows that's an option out there.

Aloha Means Everything

Big news -- made it through an airport check in without having to do the crouch of shame. Sadly, Hawaiian airlines still charged me $15 for me to check my bag, despite the bags near weightlessness.

We are smack dab in the middle of our Hawaiian adventure, trying to figure out how Hawaii and their tourism machine are handling the "weakonomy". Hawaii is a tourist mainstay, and it isn't going anywhere, but are the beaches emptier? Activities cheaper? The hotels willing to deal more? The surfers gone? Hey, it isn't like they can send Mike Wallace to get the answers to these questions, right?

Oahu and Kauai will be scouted for as many beaches, eats, and Hawaiian activities we can fit into two days, so stay tuned.

Richard Branson Kisses Jaunted

April 30, 2009 at 11:55 AM | by | Comments (2)

Yesterday, we attend yet another Virgin America new route launch party. Keep going VA! This time Sir Richard Branson and Co. have begun offering five-times-daily flights flights out of The Real Orange County (John Wayne Airport) to San Francisco.

The inaugural event began yesterday after take off in San Francisco with Branson twittering in-flight using the fleet-wide WiFi at 35,000 feet. Upon landing in the OC, Branson was greeted by the cast of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and Red Bull athletes. And for those guests lucky enough to be on the inaugural flight? They received Bare Escentuals makeovers and Sunset Tan spray.

The party continued over to the Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach but before all that, we managed to chase Sir Richard Branson down for an interview, in his car.
