Nicole Kidman Heads to Kosovo

Move over Bono, and step aside Angelina: it looks like newlywed Nicole Kidman is the latest celeb to jump on the "Goodwill Ambassador" bandwagon. Kidman arrived in Kosovo this weekend as an official United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.
She traveled through the region's worst war-torn areas during her visit, stopping in the southwestern town of Djakovica, one of the areas most devastated by the conflict. She was named goodwill ambassador of the U.N. Development Fund for Women in January, and this is her first trip under that title. She told locals, "I'm here...to meet people, hear their stories and educate myself, and I suppose be a voice for you if you need it." Not her most eloquent lines, but hey, have to give the woman credit.
We're taking bets on who's next...top picks: Drew Barrymore, Alicia Silverstone.

Serbian Snake Security

When a Serbian does something, they do it properly: whether it's using a string of taxis to propose marriage or finding a great way to protect their car.
But sometimes it backfires. In Belgrade a penny-pinching man decided leaving a 6-foot snake inside his Merc would be cheaper than buying a car alarm. This seemed to work well--at least, the car wasn't stolen--until the snake found its way out of the car into the engine, and our stingy guy called the police for help. They promptly arrested him for public endangerment.

Asking for Her Hand in Holy Matrimony and a Ride Across Town
This week we have to go as far as Serbia to find the world's most romantic man. His name is Vujadin and he hails from sunny Arandjelovac (famous for a spa and "pleasing hills"), a short drive south-east of Belgrade.
Vujadin had the original idea of paying a bunch of cab drivers to each paint a letter on their vehicle and drive up to his girlfriend's house--in the correct order. The letters spelled udaj se za mene, or "marry me" in Serbian.
These kind of public marriage proposals are all a bit risky--look at what happens to people who propose at Yankee Stadium, where fans are likely to shout "Say no!"--but luckily for this son of Arandjelovac, the gal said yes. And now, all twelve of those Serbian taxis now have an inexplicable letter painted on their side.

Soccer Fans and Explosives: A Winning Combination?
With the World Cup approaching, there will be much discussion in the coming months equating the behavior of fans to their national stereotypes: the English are drunk and belligerent, the Brazilians are drunk and naked, the Italians are drunk and enthusiastic, and so on. While we don't buy into those kind of stereotypes--we went to a school that encouraged sensitivity--there has to be some kernel of truth in them. After all, there's a book about it, called How Soccer Explains the World, written by Franklin Foer, who currently edits the New Republic.
Keeping those things in mind, we present to you this clip of the 1991 European Championships semifinal, played at Red Star Belgrade's home stadium. Americans may think their fans are tough, but all they do is hurl abuse, possibly some beers, or disco records. These fans have organized chants and their own pyrotechnics. Hardly seems in the same category. In a related note, whipping a bunch of Serbs into a frenzy in the early 90s didn't end so well. Maybe keeping soccer fans drunk and happy instead of organized is the way to go after all.
