Trespasser Travel: Visit the Bohemian Club, If You Dare!
If Richard Nixon hated it, it must be fun: A Vanity Fair reporter was arrested trying to sneak into the Bohemian Grove, a secret camp for the rich and powerful outside San Francisco.
There are a lot of institutions out there keeping the white man down these days, so politicians like Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon would retreat to this summer camp for grown-ups, which was founded in 1872. There's reportedly a 20-year wait to become a member. Dick Cheney, Alan Greenspan and Newt Gingrich have stopped by to rub shoulders with Francis Ford Coppola and Merv Griffin. It has thankfully never been confirmed that members run around naked for two weeks while on camp territory.
But VF's Alex Shoumatoff wasn't the first person to contemplate breaking in: A filmmaker was not only able to infiltrate the gathering, but videotape one of their secret ceremonies, in which a figure representing "Care" is stuck in a boat on the property's lake and set ablaze. Really, they get away from everyone and that's what they do?
