Seattle's Beer Festival Welcomes Drinkers and Their Dogs
Seattle is famous for their weather and their coffee, but they've slowly been making their way onto the beer scene as well. After all, they aren't too far away from Portland, a city that has more breweries than anywhere else in the country. To celebrate this new beer fame, they’re welcoming one and all to the Seattle International Beer Festival.
On July 3-5, hop heads and beer bellies from around the country will gather at the Seattle Center Mural Amphitheatre to test out the latest and greatest from the world of beer. There will be over 150 varieties on tap and in bottles just waiting for you to sample them. We just hope there aren’t too many coffee-flavored porters hanging around, because those are less than tasty.
Tickets are $20, a price that includes admission, tasting glass, live music and ten beer tickets. Unfortunately unlimited samples aren’t available here, so you’ll need to buy more tickets for $1 each if you’re still thirsty. Also, depending on the “swank factor”—their words not ours—your sample can cost between one and four tickets. For those early risers, there’s a Happy Hour between noon and 1:00 pm where you’ll get five extra beer tickets.
Once you’ve paid for your ticket, you are welcome to visit all three days of the festival; there’s no re-entry fees. So feel free to bring your dog the next daythey’re welcome inside so you have someone to gripe to about your hangover.

When the US Goes Green Tomorrow, Where Will You Be?
Have you fished out your bicycle from underneath the swim noodles in your garage and aired out that old T-shirt with the recycling logo yet? Get a move on, buster, as tomorrow is Earth Day 2009, with green awareness events planned in every major city in the United States. Urbanites are especially encouraged to get out and say "hey" to Mother Nature, and thanks to Treehugger's list of the "10 Best US Cities to be in for Earth Day, they can, without too much thought beyond shouldering a reusable tote bag and heading out.
While the list is full of some surprises (Los Angeles, really?), we mainly think it's a godsend in terms of exhaustive event listings for the big eco players like their top five cities: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Washington DC, and number one New York City. From tours of water treatment plants to green tea parties, there's an eco-event to suit everyone's tastes, so long as that taste leans to the green.
Check out the full "10 Best Cities for Earth Day" list here.

From One Cold Spot to Another, Icelandair to Seattle
If there's one good thing that's come of the bank collapse in Iceland, it's that Icelandair seems to be putting themselves out there and making the rounds in order to seduce frugal travelers to their hurting homeland. First, we noticed the advertisements popping up on the New York subway, reminding those with wanderlust that Iceland is only five hours away, and now Icelandair is letting more of the west coast in on their action.
Freshly announced yesterday, the news that the airline will add fellow cold climate city Seattle to its list of destinations is great for both ends. Flying four times a week direct from Reykjavik's Keflavik Airport to Seattle-Tacoma Airport, Icelandair will launch their first US west coast route on July 22. Although booking doesn't look to be open for the flights yet, we're hoping that these fares feature into the frequent Iceland specials.
For reference's sake, the press release does give a sample direct roundtrip price of $822 plus taxes. If they were to make inclusive of taxes and throw in a few nights' hotel stay, then we may yet be tempted to personally inject some cash into Iceland's economy.

Seattle Gets A Little Naughty During The Moisture Festival

The citizens of Seattle only have a couple more months of clouds and rain left, and to celebrate they’ve devoted an entire festival to moisture. Well, not really, but that is the name of the festival—and it is rainy in Seattle—we’re just trying to keep it clean while discussing a festival that gets a little frisky after dark.
Celebrating its sixth year the Moisture Festival runs from March 11 through April 5, all while putting on quite the show. Organizers call their entertainment offerings Comedy/Varietè, which to us means a little bit of everything.

Most Missed in Seattle

While you'd think that most of Seattle's Craigslist Missed Connections would happen in coffeeshops, apparently you're most likely to be spotted if you're mobile--the majority of missed connections appear to be hotties either riding the bus or driving their cars.
El Camino
607 N. 35th St.
When the weather permits it, enjoy people watching on this 'fancy' Mexican restaurant's patio. The Stranger recommends that you "don't miss the deep-fried plantain chips with guacamole."
Crypt
113 Tenth Ave.
Guys looking for other guys to share an interest in all things leather should linger in this erotica shop to see who is making eyes at who. You might not want to linger and ogle TOO much, though. That's just creepy.
Noc Noc
1516 Second Ave.
This homey bar and dance club is known for friendly waitstaff, cheap drinks and cheery clientele, but you never know who might be too shy to approach you as you do your thang on the dance floor.

The Amazing Race 10 got off to a rip-roaring start last night. A woman with an artificial leg, a climb up the Great Wall, a bunch of hot blondes and two Korean body builders skipped over the Pacific, on the usual quest to win $1 million. So what's new? In-race eliminations and what looks to be a small, yet failed attempt to join the ranks of the "Survivor Ethnic Diversity Edition". The run-down, after the jump.

Booze From Asia is Classier, More Efficient
Belltown is officially the hottest, sexiest neighborhood in Seattle, yet somehow the vibe is that of a college town where every single student is celebrating their 21st birthday. if you've ever been to Santa Barbara on a Thursday night, you can visualize this.
Amid this sea of hormones and smeared makeup, there's an oasis in the form of Umi Sake House, a relatively quiet, elegant lounge. There's a sushi bar and full kitchen, but the emphasis is on the many different types of sake available by the bottle.
The slightly calmer crowd within is probably due to the prices: The cheapest bottle is $35--and the nectar therein is pretty gross. True tastiness comes with a $150 price tag. The space is nice as well, white and bright inside with a more demure "patio" out back. We use that term liberally, as it's a Seattle-style patio: a room, with skylights. There's also a DJ, but he's spinning backgroundy music, not encouraging people to get up on the floor.

Tap Dancing
It's Friday afternoon in springtime, and that can mean only one thing: Beer. And soon. Right now, in fact, if you work from home like we do. Kidding! We actually started hours ago.
As far as beer goes, Seattle bar and restaurant Brouwer's Café on Fremont, is on our list. The café is owned and operated by the same folks as famed Seattle beerporium Bottleworks.
While the bottle selection is impressive at Brouwer's, we're more excited about the massive number of Belgian beers on tap, including several lambics. It's enough to rival even the gone-but-not-forgotten Belgo in New York.
There's Belgian food as well, which is tasty but can be a bit meaty once you venture past the fries. But Delirium Tremens on draft? We'd hoist a glass to that any day.
