Woody Allen's new movie "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," shot in Spain last year, got the red-carpet treatment at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, with star Penelope Cruz braving the flashbulbs.
But where was American beauty (and recent Allen muse) Scarlett Johansson? Rumor has it the recently engaged actress's demands caused the studio to reject her travel arrangements including an expensive make-up assistant and a posh suite at a particular hotel.
To play devil's advocate, maybe Johansson wanted to spend the week with her new fiance Ryan Reynolds. But why not take him to southern France? We hear it's very romantic! Even without her, though, the movie reportedly got a ten-minute standing ovation at a public screening.
While it appears fewer people are flying in and out of LAX these days, there were still plenty of photographers on hand to greet Scarlett Johansson and her boyfriend Ryan Reynolds when the pair landed at the beleaguered airport yesterday.
The Lost in Translation star showed off here travel attire, which consisted of a giant bag, a chapeau, a pair of white sunglasses, and what looked to be a pair of incredibly uncomfortable, unflattering pants. While travel attire is definitely a personal decision, past airport photo shoot participants have scored much higher on the travel fashion scale.
You likely read the book way back when, this weekend go check out Scarlett Johansson in the movie. The Nanny Diaries opens today and tells the tale of the NY nanny/NYU student who's forced to take charge of a Park Avenue brat under the eye of his spoiled mom.
This one's full of stars, like Laura Linney as "Mrs. X" and Alicia Keys as the nanny's BFF, Paul Giamatti as "Mr. X". We hear it's not as good as the book--big surprise--but should provide some fun summer entertainment.
The movie's set in NY and was actually shot there, so this week we offer you some fun things to check out in Gotham:
Where To Stay:Inn at Irving Place -- Forgo the city's giant hotels and head to Gramercy Park where you can make like you own your own brownstone. Check into the Inn at Irving Place and snuggle up in the Frette linens or curl up by the fire - just like the other half lives. Bring your black Amex: rooms start at $415. It might be worth it to shack up in a place built in 1834 that once housed a speakeasy.
Where To Eat:Loft -- Billing itself as "the true NYers alternative to the trendy norm," Loft offers a chic, calm space with an in-house movie screen where you can watch a classic while eating French bistro/steakhouse fare.
What to Do:Cooking Classes at I.C.E. -- Make like the Park Avenue moms and sign up for a cooking class at the city's premiere culinary institute. You can learn how to make everything from chocolate desserts to perfect martinis. Classes run a bit steep, but knowing how to whip up a perfect creme brulee is worth it.
The 2007 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, the giant Indio California music festival featuring everyone from Rage Against the Machine to Willie Nelson, went off with plenty of hitches this past weekend.
While Scarlett Johansson (who joined the Jesus and Mary Chain to badly sing the chorus of "Just Like Honey"--according to reports), Drew Barrymore, and Lindsay Lohan were all spotted amongst campers and concert-goers this past weekend, the real question for those considering road tripping to this festival in the future is where are the bottlenecks?
After listening to tipsters and surfing the message boards here are our quick and dirty post-Coachella tips:
· Take half the 200 or so daytime parking staff workers and have them direct exit traffic. This was the worst thing ever. Yes, worse than the Silversun Pickups' set and mid song banter. After two hours of bedlam, an attendee finally showed up to direct traffic.
· Double the number of Female pat down/bag check lines--this should not be a hard job to fill.
· Will Call is a mess. Avoid it at all costs.
· If you are considering going to the festival alone, go for it. There is a popular Onsite-Camping-All-Alone-Club, which starts up on the Coachella message boards months before the festival.
· Those looking for a camping alternative should try Palm Spring hotels like the Desert Moon Resort, where rooms were available as late as last Friday night.
Parking and traffic issues are going to happen when an estimated 180,000 people attended a music festival. In general, police reported few problems, and most festival attendees felt the weekend was extremely well organized, aside from the parking issues.
For most people, a Super Bowl party means nachos, beer and shouting at the television. But for a celebrity, there doesn't even need to be a game going on -- just the knowledge that it's going to happen is enough to get the party started. Here's how some celebrities marked Super Bowl XLI this weekend:
Jennifer Lopezperformed before a crowd of 25,000 on Miami Beach for Ocean Drive Magazine's Bowl bash, where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hung out with Andy Roddick and Josh Duhamel before vamoosing to Club Mokai for the afterparty.
Scarlett Johanssonwon a free one-year lease on a condo at the Flamingo South Beach -- a great place to chill with on-again, off-again love Josh Hartnett, no? Amenities at the Flamingo include designer kitchens, a health club, and complimentary off-site happy hours.
Over at Maxim's "Hotel de Maxim" Super Bowl party at the Sagamore, Black Eyed Pea Fergieperformed for guests like WWE and "Dancing With The Stars" competitor Stacy Keibler and celebrity child Brooke Hogan. There was also a party on the roof at Townhouse, where Perez Hilton spotted and/or accosted Mandy Moore.
The Miami area is pretty much a paradise for private jet travel, but its main commercial airport (MIA, of course) should nonetheless be packed with B-listers today.
Scarlett Johansson and Selma Blair spent the weekend raging in Vegas, catching up with each other over sushi, hitting the clubs, and then risking it all at a private craps table early Sunday morning.
The two headed to Treasure Island and shared sushi and sake at Social House, afterwards catching Cirque de Soleil's Mystere show. Before hitting the tables in the early hours, they also reportedly made the scene at PURE at Caesar's Palace, both Friday and Saturday nights.
Sounds like some good old-fashioned girlfriend fun to us!
Scarlett Johansson was a nervous wreck before she had her first Brazilian waxing at the Oasis Day Spa and, according to insiders at DaTommaso restaurant, the waxing crew couldn't stop admiring her body.
Now we aren't going to pretend to know anything about waxing, we are just here to sift the travel advice out of Scarlet's adventure.

Bulgaria, or Sofia anyway is a city that at one time was a real jewel of Eastern Europe, but it has been trampled on so much throughout every war. It's been bombed. It's been taken over. It's been given up. I mean, it's really been just harassed and of course, seeing remnants of the communist regime there, it's interesting the kind of buildings that they have there. It's like you're almost in a time warp or a kind of broken city somehow.
What's interesting also about it is that the youth there, they have a lot of very promising sort of creative outlets there. There is music and dance and art. There are a lot of young people there who are very enthusiastic about life, and some of them are wanting to join the EU. Others are very much against it. There is a real kind of passion there right now and so in some ways it feels very sort of forward thinking and then in other ways it's like being in a time warp.
There are a lot of strange things like if you go to the markets there, there is all this Nazi paraphernalia that you can buy. It's really interesting. It's very strange, very strange.
