While most of the the US is still shivering and donning scarves, it's the height of summer in Australia and Qantas will not let us forget it. In fact, they've set up the ultimate sand castle display right in Sydney's Circular Quay.
The 'Flying Kangaroo' recently (re)launched flights from Sydney to Gold Coast and wanted to draw some unique attention to it. Since the "glitter strip" is well-known for its beach culture we're talking about the Surfers Paradise what better way to turn some heads with a sculpture meticulously carved into the shape of a plane full of passengers heading to soak up the sun.
If you think you can build a pretty good sandcastle, you might want to think again.
On July 23 & 24, the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition brought the world's best sandcastle artists to Imperial Beach, CA where they had only a few hours to build their masterpiece before the tide washed it away.
A total of 32 teams competed in both amateur and masters categories including the team I.B. Posse which won first place in the masters division for its tribute to American Troops. The group won last year too for their sand-centric view of the BP oil spill.

This year Disneyland Paris is going on a little bit of a beach vacation, and they’re encouraging one and all to swing by to take in a little of the sun and sand. As part of this year’s Sand Sculpture Festival in Blankenberge—that’s in Belgium—piles and piles of sand are being transformed into a version of France’s most famous theme park.
It’s not just princesses and castles either, as the whole park has been recreated. The only downer is that this is a look but don’t touch situation, as sand Space Mountain wouldn’t hold up too well to throngs of tourists.
As we noted a few weeks ago--there is nothing quite like building a sand castle at the beach, well for about five minutes, and then letting someone else take over while you hit the snack bar.
It's the prime season for sandcastle building, and today's NY Times highlights a slew of annual nationwide festivals taking place-esp the the biggest and baddest-the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in Imperial Bch, CA.
They dish out more than $21,000 in cash prizes. You might want to rethink that trip to the snack bar and get digging...Last year's winner is pictured above--so you can size up the competition.
