New Salvador Dali Museum to Open in Florida on 1-11-11
Art lovers are pumped for 1/11/11 and not because of superstition. The day marks the opening of the new Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. To make the day extra lucky, the museum will open at 11:11 a.m.
The museum offers the largest collection of Dalí's work outside of Spain, with 2,140 pieces of the artist's work on display. The waterfront building pays homage to the surrealist master with a glass sculpture whose more than 900 unique panels snake around the concrete facade.

Go Mad At Salvador Dali's Theater-Museum
The Teatre-Museu Dalí, a Surrealist palace designed by the mustachioed man himself, is an easy day trip from Barcelona. Dalí grew up nearby and, while he spent a significant amount of time in exile, he considered his childhood there to be a major factor in his decision to become an artist. For art lovers, it's a must-see, but short-haul sightseers might want to skip it.
An €11 ($15) ticket gets you into every room of the former opera house, which is full of Dalí's work, along with special appearances by his friends' paintings. Of particular interest is the Mae West room, built specifically so the artist could paint it for his quirky portrait of the notorious actress.
It's a great place to take pictures, but a bit of a jog for people trying to do Barcelona in only a few days. If you can, take an express train (RENFE, €10.30, or $14) to shave half an hour off the trip, although you're still looking at about 90 minutes on a train whose announcements are never made in English. Still, it's a pleasant breather from the crowds of the Plaça de Catalunya and a relaxed way to see the Catalan countryside.
