Airport Photo Shoot: What? Is There a Plane Here?

June 9, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo look about as discombobulated as we do as they stumbled off a plane in San Diego recently. Jessica's lucky one of this season's in maxidresses is long enough to keep her warm on the coldest plane.

The heat's been off Simpson the Elder since Ashlee was married to Fall Out Boy singer Pete Wentz and announced her "surprise" pregnancy, but she's been re-establishing herself as a country music singer at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee.

No word yet on whether Mr. Romo joined her at the four-day summer fest or even likes country music.

Airport WiFi: Surfing East Coast and West

February 19, 2008 at 3:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

Contribute your airport wireless report by leaving it in comments, uploading your airport photo to Jaunted Flickr Photo Pool, or via email, and we will add it to our U.S. Airport Wireless map.

We'd hate for you to forget about our Airport WiFi Guide, our up-to-date map of spots with free Internet access.

Reader Bruce wrote in to tell us about the situation at Charlotte-Douglas International, which sounds pretty cushy:

Charlotte-Douglas offers *free* wi-fi in all concourses, lounges and restaurants, even on the land side. There are comfy rocking chairs and accessible power outlets everywhere, too. And yes, this is full access, not just a jump to the paid service vendors.

We also hear that San Diego, Virgin America's latest destination, has free internet access. Further north, Sacramento International has a free signal throughout its facilities.

Keep sending in those tips, WiFi fans!

Zoom Airlines Coming to Florida, California

December 19, 2007 at 11:00 AM | by | Comment (1)

Zoom Airlines, which already flies between London and JFK, is expanding its low-cost transatlantic flights to the United States. Service between London Gatwick and Fort Lauderdale begins May 22, 2008, and flights between San Diego and Gatwick start June 20.

While Zoom offers super-low one-way fares like many of the UK's LCCs, the company also has the nasty habit of tacking on vague surcharges. A round trip between Fort Lauderdale and Gatwick, for example, is listed at $398, until "departure taxes, fees and fuel surcharges" bring the price up to $750. Still a good deal, to be sure, but a little transparency in the booking process wouldn't hurt.

The Fort Lauderdale flights are also interesting in that some of them stop over in Bermuda, making the Atlantic island easier to reach for flyers leaving London. We're not sure about traffic the other way, though. Are Floridians really clamoring for a chillier golf environment?

Virgin America Announces San Diego Service

November 7, 2007 at 8:24 AM | by | Comment (1)

Virgin America will fly three flights a day between SFO to San Diego International starting February 12 of next year. That frequency will increase to five flights a day on March 9.

Fares start at $39 each way, and first class starts at $149 one way. Obviously, the aircraft will all be outfitted with VA's standard in-flight entertainment options. (The standard options don't include lingerie models.)

We have to brag a bit that we called this last month. Now that it's official, we can start snooping around to dig up the next new route for VA.
