Everyone Either Loves or Hates Paris' Love Locks

Where: Paris, France
March 31, 2014 at 10:39 AM | by | ()

There are many traditions and tidbits over in Paris, and one of the most famous might just be attaching a padlock to a bridge and throwing the key into the river to symbolize everlasting love. Locking your love in a city known for affection and romance is all fine and dandy, but apparently the act might do a little bit of damage to the bridge and environment. Things are safe for now but there’s a group looking to unlock—if you will—this type of thing, as they aim to protect the Seine and the bridges that span it.

No Love Locks was born to save the bridges, as two women desire to protect and to prolong the city’s beauty—free from locks. At first we kind of thought this was a little unnecessary, but as we read their story—and their description of the locks as a creeping fungus—we kind of see their side of things.

Say No to Jewelry and Yes to Private Pool Villas for Valentine's Day

February 11, 2014 at 5:49 PM | by | ()

Do yourself a favor this Valentine's Day and skip the expensive dinner, skip the diamond engagement ring. Instead, put airline tickets in the hands of your love, and give the gift of an experience. All this week, we'll be sharing a few of our own recommendations for some of the most romantic travel ideas in this world.

Idea #1: A night or two in a private pool villa, for skinny-dipping.

Now, skinny-dipping here and there doesn't make you a nudist, but it does impart some spontaneous edge and prove you're more than a little comfortable in your own skin. Sleep naked, and wake up before coffee by walking straight from bed into the deep end.

Unlike an overwater bungalow, the confines of a private pool ensure there'll be no sharks or jellyfish lurking below. Here's our three favorite hotels with villas whose pools are ultra-private:

How to Join the Mile High Club Without Getting Arrested

Where: Various Locations
July 30, 2013 at 11:29 AM | by | ()

In terms of joining the Mile High Club, some might say that hiding is half the fun. But for those of you who can’t perform under the pressure of looming prosecution, the airline industry has options for you in what amounts to a hilarious display of supply and demand. Yes, that’s right—several "airlines" have emerged across the globe to help passengers cross an in-air romp off their bucket lists.

We told you about Exotic Airlines out of Australia a few years ago, however it seems the company has since dropped out of the game as its website is no longer operational. So what are the options today?

Believe it or not, an answer comes from the Midwest. Cincinnati’s Flamingo Air was “conceived” in the early nineties, and has been offering “romantic airplane rides” ever since. For $425, you and your partner can get an hour-long ride in a small, “curtained” aircraft with champagne and chocolates. Apparently the concept has gone over rather well, as the company said they sometimes do up to eight flights a day.

Three Must-See Filming Locations in Woody Allen's 'To Rome With Love'

Where: Rome , Italy
July 6, 2012 at 1:56 PM | by | ()

With his latest movie, To Rome With Love, Woody Allen is once again proving he's the master of turning a film's location into another character, just as he did with two of the most travel-inspiring movies of the past decade: Midnight in Paris and Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

To Rome With Love follows four different characters—a well-known American architect reliving his youth, an average middle-class Roman who turns into a celebrity, a young married woman drawn into an affair, and an American opera director endeavoring to put a singing mortician on stage—finding their way through Rome.

Check out three of our favorite Eternal City locations prominently featured in To Rome With Love:

Sugar High, Up High: Five Exceptional Airport Candy Shops

February 9, 2012 at 9:30 AM | by | ()

If you’re flying next week, beware the red and pink cheap chocolates of the Hudson News airport outlets. While sending something in advance of Valentine’s Day is probably the best idea, you can always grab something nice for him or her on your way home from the airport, and no we're not talking about flowers from an arrivals hall vending machine. Here’s five airport candy shops that should satisfy any sweetie’s sweet tooth:

Sugar Pop - Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport

Even if you don’t need something for the upcoming Hallmark holiday, it’s worth it to stop in at Sugar Pop within the mall section of Terminal 1-Lindbergh. The place is loaded with different colors and sugary options, and they even have some teddy bears and other cuddly critters to go along with all those calories. This isn’t exactly the place for gourmet confections, but if you’re looking for oversized lollipops or personalized treats, it'll more than do.

Candy Empire – Singapore-Changi Airport

Sitting within the basement level of Terminal 3 is the spot you need to visit for chocolates, cookies, and everything in between. They promise stuff from Australia, Europe, and the United States, so if you can’t find something that fits your needs, you don’t know what you need. A few pieces of foreign candy from Candy Empire should hopefully smooth over any sort of trouble caused by not being home on Valentine's Day.

Mile High Club or Not, You Could Have Valentine's Dinner on the Concorde

February 8, 2012 at 1:25 PM | by | ()

The Concorde may technically be dead, but airline romance isn’t, if British Airways’ Valentine’s deal is anything to go by.

A couple of years ago, the UK airline did a neat Valentine’s Day party kinda thing on flights between London and New York; this year, the celebration is on a more personal scale, though still rather spectacular: dinner for two on the Concorde.

The bad news? You’ll have to pay for it. The good? It’s for charity! Just bid for it in a blind email auction, and you’ll win dinner for two on board BA’s flagship Concorde G-BOAC at Manchester Airport, in the Runway Visitor Park.

Cake for Everybody! Virgin Atlantic Celebrates the Royal Wedding in the Sky

April 21, 2011 at 10:03 AM | by | ()

We're so over The Royal Wedding, to the end that we're rolling our eyes every time we read or see something on TV about it. We should sure Buckingham Palace for bruised eye sockets, if such a thing exists. We've even giving up on caring who's designing Kate's dress; luckily we're in the USA and not in the UK, so the news saturation is much less and we can escape from The Royal Wedding hubbub if we want. But you know who really can't? Virgin Atlantic passengers flying on April 29.

The 29th is next Friday, and it's the wedding date (duh). It's also the date that all Virgin Atlantic flights departing the UK for the USA or Caribbean will celebrate the nuptials in-flight with a "traditional UK street party." Whoa—so there'll be drunkards singing and angry teens holding "No Cuts" picket signs? Haha no that was last month's UK street parties. This month it's all about tea and cake and wedding regalia. Here's what passengers will get:

Next Year, Just Forget About Everything Else and Go to Italy in February

Where: Italy
February 15, 2011 at 3:31 PM | by | ()

Did you have a good Valentine's Day? We hope you did, and we hope you have somebody you love and who loves you back, but if you don't, just think that there'll always be Italy. She's a country that welcomes solo travelers with wide open arms, arms strong from making pasta by hand, so a hug from Italy is one you never forget. Dispensing with the awkward metaphor, just know tha if you've never been to Italy, the month of February is a perfect time to go, and you can start planning for a trip there next year now.

Your first step should be to start saving; maybe when you deposit paychecks set aside a small percentage in an Italy fund. Start talking about going; make your coworkers well aware that you plan to take vacation at this time of the year, next year, and that this trip means a lot to you. Venture into the historical fiction section of the bookstore and pull some titles for pleasure reading, and pick up a well-illustrated guidebook to Italy while there. We suggest the DK series for all these photos and easy reading layout.

'How Much Do You Heart Me?' Asks Adioso's Travel Deal-Booking Flight Attendant

February 11, 2011 at 10:49 AM | by | ()

For those of you scrambling this weekend for a perfect Valentine's Day gift, and for those of you who just want to book some affordable travel deals quickly and easily, we've just discovered an awesome tool on Adioso, the travel booking site flavor of the month. They have a mini-site called "How Much Do You Heart Me?," starring an adorable cartoon flight attendant, who asks you how much, on a sliding scale, are you willing to pay for a flight and hotel vacation for two. Adioso then searches for package matches within your budget for upcoming weekends.

The deals can originate from most US cities, but we tested it out with New York of course, and began by setting it low, at $610 total for two people. How Much Do You Heart Me came back with a weekend trip to Arlington, Virginia (because Virginia is for lovers?) with a grand total of $552, including roundtrip airfare and two nights at a Hyatt for two people. Not too shabby, but what can the big spenders get?

How to Spot Prince William and Kate Middleton On Their Wedding Day for Free

January 5, 2011 at 10:39 AM | by | ()

Although it's already been news that many Britons are looking forward to the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29 not for the historical or romantic aspects, but for the long weekend it's created and the opportunity for vacation, there's still a pretty great chance that everyone will sit down in front of a TV to watch the spectacle.

For those planning to really get in the spirit and travel to London, there will luckily be opportunities to spy the couple on their wedding day without having to beg, borrow and steal for a ticket to the Westminster Abbey ceremony—Kate and Wills will take a carriage ride past many of London's biggest tourist attractions on their way from their wedding to the post-nuptials reception at Buckingham Palace, hosted by Wills' father Prince Charles.

The AP has the details on the projected path:
