Chicago's Other, Other Airport is About to Get Busy

December 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (2)

It’s not even Friday, and we’re already excited about some new routes. Mokulele Airlines usually does their thing flying back and forth between different Hawaiian Islands, but if all goes well they’ll soon be flying all the way to the greater Chicagoland—and beyond.

Right now the plan kind of hinges on a decision from Uncle Sam and his buddies at the FAA, but the plan would have Mokulele Airlines arrive at Chicago-Rockford International Airport (not O'Hare and not Midway) as early as March. The flights would be operated as a charter through the airlines’ Mokulele Tours group, as some chilly citizens would be whisked all the way to Honolulu through nonstop flights.

You Really Ought To Give Illinois A Try

April 22, 2009 at 2:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

Spring is finally coming to the Midwest, and now former governor Rod Blagojevich will get to enjoy the whole thing: A court officially blocked the allegedly bribe-accepting guv from heading to Costa Rica to appear on the NBC reality show "I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!"

It's too bad Rod will be too busy preparing for trial to hang out with, and we are not making any of these names up, "American Idol"'s Sanjaya Malakar, Dog the Bounty Hunter and (of course) Heidi and Spencer. But maybe he'd like to take a trip closer to home instead. Local reader Robert tipped us off this week that both Chicago Rockford International Airport and Decatur Airport offer free WiFi in the terminals. To quote Blago, WiFi is "a [censored] valuable thing," but you can give it away -- and we love it when you do.

Going from town to town to get our kids out of the pool hall? Don't forget to write us from the airport.

Adventures of Link: Waiting in (Airport) Traffic

December 4, 2007 at 5:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

Chicago Rockford International Airport can't wait to have congestion problems of its own. After years of warming the bench for O'Hare and Midway, airport officials think they're ready for more commercial airlines than they already have. (That'd be a single United route, some Allegiant Air flights and charter service.) With a large traveling population living nearby, Rockford is certainly a destination to watch--if you're Skybus and don't mind an 89-mile drive to downtown Chicago. Hey, at least RFD has free WiFi.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas is on track to host a record number of passengers this year, while New York-area airports are costing business travelers millions of dollars in lost productivity. While the city's comptroller can describe the problem, he sadly doesn't have any brilliant fixes for NYC's airport woes.
