Bath's Got More Than Roman Baths; It's Got Princess Diana's Dresses
The town of Bath in Britain may be known best for its "healing waters" beloved of everyone since the Romans, and as a result it's also something of a huge tourist trap. If you find yourself with more than a few days in London, eventually someone will suggest a daytrip to Bathbut finally there's a better reason to go than buying the local water. Bath's Fashion Museum is hosting an exhibition of Princess Diana's dresses, from now until January 9, 2011.
The dresses, all from private collectors and all previously displayed at Kensington Palace, are from the Princess' royal tours of Canada and New Zealand, when every day presented a new formal event for Diana to attend in custom-made gowns made by Catherine Walker, Versace, Donald Campbell, Caroline Charles and Murray Arbeid. They've got a period costume she wore at a picnic, an opera gown and even a very innocent-looking dress she wore at age 18.

Morbid Travel: Princess Diana Death Tour So Very Tacky
We admit, we weren't one of those people glued to our televisions in 1997 when Princess Diana was killed suddenly in a Paris car accident, but we understand why some people marked the 10-year anniversary of her passing this past August. But will that anniversary spark a new wave of tourists to the place where she died?
This week at least one bus load of people without intent to rubberneck followed the path of Diana and her then-boyfriend Dodi al-Fayed: They were British jurors sitting on an inquest by al-Fayed's father into whether the royal family had any connection to the accident. Still, paparazzi hounded the jurors to the point that their bus actually hit a post and got a flat tire en route to the Ritz where Diana and Dodi ate their last meal.
Will Britain's $20 million investigation yield new results? Probably not, but that won't stem the tide of the tours that have been going on since 1998. As one French official told a Time Magazine reporter:
People can't get enough of Diana, so they keep coming back to her through the crash... Come see me in another 10 years, and I'll bet something similar to this will still be going on.

Ten Years Later: UK Remembers Diana, the Original Super World Traveler

This week residents of New Orleans marked the Second Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. But there's another memorial happening today on the other side of the pond: The tenth anniversary of the death of Princess Diana. She was just 36.
The People's Princess was known for her humanitarian efforts, and she traveled more extensively than any royalty we can remember. Diana brought attention to landmines that were left buried and unmarked after civil war, she raised awareness of famine and helped lift the stigma of AIDS. She was the original super world traveler, and we're guessing, where Angelina Jolie got the idea in the fist place.
