Canadian Flight Attendants Pose for a 2012 Calendar

September 22, 2011 at 9:27 AM | by | Comment (1)

And just like that, fall has arrived. And just like that, it's about time to consider buying 2012 calendars. This year, may we suggest skipping the bookstores for something you definitely won't find there: The Turbulence Calendar of Canadian Flight Attendants.

You read right—this calendar is only featuring ladies who end their sentences with "eh?" and like to start the day at Tim Horton's. The calendar shoot recently took place in a cheap motel, to give the ladies that layover-chic look, we guess. There's no preview shots aside from the awkward one above, and the saucy background photo of their website.

The calendar won't hit the e-shelves until November and there's a few promo events where you can meet the models (and get their signatures, of course). Now we only wonder what lucky airline will get to honor of being Miss July.

New Nonstops to Iceland and Japan Are Just Some of This Week's New Routes

September 16, 2011 at 8:54 AM | by | Comment (1)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Icelandair:
The United Kingdom and Ireland aren’t the only island nations in Europe, so don’t forget to give Iceland a chance when thinking about your next trip. To make things easier on you, Icelandair is planning nonstop service between Denver and Reykjavik beginning next May.

The flights do their thing four times a week all year long. Also, if these Icelandair flights are similar to other ones, they’ll even allow you to work in a stopover in Iceland before you head off to somewhere else in Europe. Fares are as low as $489 roundtrip between the two cities, but of course that’s before some of those pesky fees and taxes.

Five Airlines Serving Starbucks Coffee in the Skies

May 25, 2011 at 9:00 AM | by | Comment (1)

There may be a Starbucks around every corner, but that’s not always the case when you’re stuck flying around the globe. Don’t worry—airlines know that you need your caffeine fix, so there’s plenty of airplanes where you can grab a cup of caffeine from the comfort of 12B. Here’s just five airlines where you can get a little bit of Starbucks up in the air:

· United Airlines:
They might be merging into the world’s biggest and baddest airline, but that doesn’t mean that they are forgetting about the small stuff. United has been offering up Starbucks coffee aboard pretty much every one of their flights for a few years now, and we hear that Continental will also be getting the new brew once the whole merger and transition is complete. Unfortunately there’s no lattes or fancy stuff, but when you’re stuck at 35,000-feet above the ground you take what you can get—especially since it’s one of the free beverage options.

· Porter Airlines:
Clearly we haven’t hid our love for Porter Airlines, and their coffee selection is just another reason why we are ready to join their fan club as soon as it includes an official membership card. Both in their free-for-all lounges—at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and Ottawa International Airport—and in the air Starbucks is an option. They just began brewing Starbucks Pike Place Roast up in the skies a few weeks ago, and apparently they’re the only one in the world to do so—no generic Starbucks flavors for these guys.

Hollywood to Hollywood is Just One of This Week's New Routes

May 20, 2011 at 9:02 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· JetBlue:
If you’ve ever wanted to fly from Hollywood to Hollywood now’s the time to do it, as JetBlue has begun flies between the two cities. Well see, technically it’s Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, but both airports are pretty close by to places known as Hollywood. Things started up on May 11 and there were even special guests on hand to welcome the new flights. Lady Gaga and Jane Lynch—or at least their wax museum replicas—were there along with some free tickets to Madame Tussauds is Hollywood (the California one).

· United:
The new United is beefing up its offerings in and out of Houston this week. As the airline starts combining operations and streamlining things with Continental, we can probably expect a few new routes here and there, but also we’re probably going to lose a few that overlap. This week Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Grand Junction, Colorado, and Montreal—you know where that is—all got some new flights to and from Houston. It’s all regional jet service, so don’t expect much—but at least the Montreal route gets some of those kind-of-comfy Embraer E170s.

Toronto's City Airport Might Just Get a $50 Million Pedestrian Tunnel

Where: Toronto, ON, Canada
March 22, 2011 at 12:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

Apparently it’s been an on and off discussion for several years, and now it looks like there’s a development in a different kind of battle for Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This one has nothing to do with other airlines trying to get access to Porter Airlines favorite little airport, but it has everything to do with how passengers get to the airport.

As of now the only way to get to Toronto’s City Airport is thanks to a ferry ride, but some are eager for a more convenient way. There had been talk of a tunnel or bridge in the past, but now it looks like the debate is heating up once again in favor of building a pedestrian tunnel. It’s far from a done deal as of now—mainly because it’s going to cost around 50 million Loonies—but some just can’t wait to stroll to the airport.

Air Canada Begins Flying Their Bombardiers to Toronto City Airport on May 1

March 7, 2011 at 1:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

We’ve been following the ongoing battle at Billy Bishop Airport, and it now looks like Air Canada will finally be landing at Toronto-City. Just to recap, the airline has been trying to bring back its turboprop service to the smaller—yet super convenient—airport right outside the comings and goings of downtown Toronto after stopping service in 2006.

For quite some time, Porter Airlines has been the exclusive commercial airline with access to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, and thanks to the lack of a true competitor, they’ve done pretty well with their service to Canada and the United States.

Porter Airlines Still Gets to Enjoy Some Alone Time at Billy Bishop Airport

Where: Toronto, ON, Canada
February 9, 2011 at 9:18 AM | by | Comments (0)

Everything continues to go well for little Porter Airlines, as some of their most recent news confirms they’ve got more butts in the seats than they did a year ago. There hasn’t really been too much talk about new destinations or new flights, but it seems that those routes to New York and Myrtle Beach have been doing pretty well.

The thing that might be helping them out the most is that they’re still not facing any real competition at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Not too long ago, we suggested that Air Canada might be bringing some smaller planes into the airport as well—clearly eager to cash in on Porter’s market—but it looks like that idea is delayed yet again.

The Battle for Toronto City Airport Begins Between Air Canada and Porter

October 12, 2010 at 10:35 AM | by | Comments (2)

We knew that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has been the happening airport in Toronto for quite some time, and especially since Porter Airlines is proving to the world how successful the little airport can be. Air Canada has been trying to gain access to the airport, and now it looks like we have a date for when there will finally be a little competition at the airport.

Most of the paperwork has been filled out and signed, and it looks like Air Canada—through the help from one of their regional airline buddies—will be heading to and from the airport beginning in February. Their initial flight schedule will be limited to just Montreal, but with 15 nonstop options throughout the day, there’s plenty of availability.

Air Canada and Continental Muscle In on Porter Airlines' Toronto Party

Where: Toronto, ON, Canada
June 30, 2010 at 8:38 AM | by | Comments (2)

We had a feeling that little Porter Airlines was going to have to battle it out with the big boys sooner rather than later. It looks like that time is now, as Air Canada Jazz and Continental Airlines have been given initial approval to do their thing in and out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Center Airport.

The airport authority hired some consultants to figure everything out, and they think 44 spots should go to Porter, 30 of them to Air Canada, and just 16 slots to Continental. Porter hasn’t had any competition at the airport yet, but Air Canada was obviously a little jealous of their success. There’s going to be a full review by judges and other important legal people this July, and hopefully we’ll officially find out who gets what.

Queen Elizabeth II Will Fly Porter Airlines While Hopping Around Canada

Where: Toronto, Canada
May 21, 2010 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (3)

If you ever thought that it wasn't possible for the Queen of England to hop onboard a low-cost carrier for a quickie flight, then your world is about to be turned upside-down. That's right; her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is scheduled to grab a flight on Porter Airlines, to make the jump between Toronto and Waterloo during a 9-day trip to Canada coming up in early July.

This decision by the Queen's people to take a smaller prop plane from Porter is controversial in that it validates Porter and their flying out of Toronto City Airport (YTZ), even though Toronto's mayor and downtown residents positively abhor the airport. Now, it'll obviously be a charter flight because Porter doesn't fly the short distance between Waterloo and Toronto (there's VIARail Canada for that), but if you want to take a similar Porter scheduled route between Toronto and Ottawa in July, one-ways start at $109 CAD.

Air Canada Jazz Makes the First Move in the Fight for Toronto

Where: Toronto, ON, Canada
May 6, 2010 at 12:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

The party might be over for Porter Airlines. For quite some time they have been the only game in town when it comes to flying out of the convenient Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Sure they have awesome service and excellent in-flight amenities, but a lack of competition helps out a bunch with their success. We knew Air Canada and their buddy Jazz were planning something for some time, but it appears that their secret is now out.

Jazz is ordering 15 Q400 turboprop planes from Bombardier for around $450 million. These are pretty much the same planes that Porter Airlines has been using to ferry passengers to and from Toronto, so apparently the suits at Jazz have caught on to what planes are successful on these routes.

Mile High Boozing: The Five Best Airlines For In-Flight Beers

April 20, 2010 at 10:15 AM | by | Comments (2)

In-flight cocktails are always a good choice when you get your in-flight boozing on, but sometimes something with a little carbonization and fermentation is what you really need. That’s why we took some time to see what’s on tap up in the air. In-flight lagers and ales might not be as sweet and tasty as some other beverage options, but they compliment the free peanuts and pretzels better than a margarita, that's for sure. Here’s our list of the best suds in the sky and the airlines where you can find them:

· Alaska Airlines
The airline dedicated to The Last Frontier State flies to way more locations than just Alaska, but their in-flight beverage selection brings a little bit of Alaska elsewhere within the nifty fifty. Besides the typical offerings of Budweiser and Miller Lite the airline also will be happy to pour you a glass of Alaskan Amber. The beer is from the Alaskan Brewing Company, and it’s an alt-style beer brewed with water from glaciers outside of Juneau. If you’re going somewhere a little warmer on Alaska Airlines—like Hawaii—they fill up the beverage cart with Longboard Island Lager from Kona Brewing Company. Either option will set you back $6 and will get you into the proper state of mind en route to a new time zone.

More boastin' and in-flight toastin' after the jump...
