Music Travel: Pitchfork's Cool Kids in Hot Chicago

June 5, 2008 at 2:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

When we attended the inaugural Pitchfork Music Festival, we had our doubts that the massively Conversed, pale hipster kids which populated the crowd would support a yearly event involving summer heat and big, acoustically challenged stages. Now in its fourth year, though, the cooler-than-thou website has established itself as a Third Coast must-visit.

The fest is bringing back last year's experiment of having bands play their seminal albums in full in a concert setting. This year brings original post-punkers Mission of Burma and rap godfathers Public Enemy. And with single tickets at $30 a day (for 10-15 bands), you can see awesome acts like The Hold Steady and Spoon and still have money left over for dinner at the Billy Goat Tavern.

Summer Music Festivals: Pitchfork '07

Where: 1501 W. Wandolph St. [map], Chicago, il, United States, 60607

We admit it. We like Yoko. She's a feisty broad with an unapologetically terrible voice. Plus, she's got a seriously hot body for a septuagenarian. Saturday, she takes the stage -- not because of John's insistence -- and plans to sing in front of an allegedly willing audience at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

The event kicks off Friday in Union Park and goes until Sunday. Other acts include Iron and Wine, the Sea and Cake, Sonic Youth, and The New Pornographers. About 30 additional performers round out the show. The event's organizer, Pitchfork, is one of those online music magazines that informs semi-hipsters on trends after the cooler hipsters are done with them (we know, it just sounds exhausting).
