Jaunted at Sundance: Walking Down Main Street

Where: Main Street [map], Park City, UT, United States, 84060
January 17, 2008 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

We went for a little walk down Main Street yesterday, scouting out the big locations for upcoming Sundance action. By the late afternoon, the sidewalks were already packed with film fest staff and other industry types drastically underdressed for the single digit temperatures. But, hey, they looked like they were having fun!

Along the way, we scoped the WireImage studio, where all the stars are set to get their official Sundance snaps taken. (It'll also be a Delta lounge.) And after a long walk, there's nothing better than a beer. We stopped in the Wasatch Brew Pub, where they serve up Polygamy Porter; we opted for the seasonal Superior Ale instead.

JetBlue Travel: Inside the New Terminal 5

January 10, 2008 at 10:01 AM | by | Comments (3)

Yesterday, we went out to JFK for a sneak preview of the brand new Terminal 5, which JetBlue plans to open in September. With our official JetBlue hardhat and dorky day-glo safety vest on, we ducked through a plywood door and into what looks to be the future of airport terminal design.

The original T5, of course, is architect Eero Saarinen's TWA terminal, famous in its own right and made doubly famous by Catch Me If You Can. The JetBlue building is set behind that, and current plans call for it to be incorporated somehow with the new terminal. (Airline reps say that at minimum there'll be check-in kiosks in the TWA building.)

The full walkthrough, in which everything is massive, after the jump.

Or go straight to our T5 slideshow.

Beer Travel: Hermann's Best Brewery

Where: First St. and Gutenberg St. [map], Hermann, MO, United States, 65041
November 26, 2007 at 1:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

Earlier this fall, we told you about Hermann, Missouri, the little German village in the middle of flyover country. Sure they have a wicked Oktoberfest, but what about beer drinking when festivals aren't in session? That's when Tin Mill Brewing Company has you covered.

When we stopped in, the tasting room had four brews on tap, ranging from easy drinking Maibock to serious teeth-grinding Dopplebock. All of 'em were quite good, and the sampler gets you four tastes for four bucks. If you're ready to commit, they also have beer by the half tankard, full tankard or growler.

Beyond the tasting room, you'll find a self-guided tour of the operation. Signage explains all the tanks and hoses, as well as the brewing process. On our visit, Pilsner was afoot along with another tank of Dopplebock--just in time to replenish the dent we made in the brewery's supply.

On Board Virgin America's First Flight To Vegas

October 11, 2007 at 1:42 PM | by | Comments (0)

The first of Virgin America's three daily flights between San Francisco and Las Vegas took off yesterday morning and Jaunted was on board. Sir Father Richard Branson led the passengers and crew from SFO to LAS even performing a mid-air wedding mid-flight. No joke, he must have become an Internet minister or something. Branson ended the brief ceremony with "bless all that is good".

The flight was quick and smooth, and despite the fact that Carmen Electra, Kyla Ebbert (yup), and some newlyweds were on the plane, we were still able to concentrate and get an update of the Virgin America cabin and in-flight entertainment experience together for you. And yes, once in Vegas we hopped on a bus and headed to Wynn Las Vegas for the bash. More on that later.

Photos and Virgin America flight review update here.

Jaunted Embedded Travel Guides: Getting Out of Osaka

Where: Osaka, Japan
September 28, 2007 at 3:00 PM | by | Comment (1)

Embedded Travel Guides: We are searching the world for folks who can take you on a field trip of their "backyard." When we find these folks, we then stealthy embed them into their local travel scene and ask them to be our eyes and ears out in the field.

We are expecting the same sort of grainy video, choppy sentences and snapshot photos that you are use to seeing from other sorts of embeds. At the end of the day we should be left with a backyard travel guidebook like no other.

Our man in Osaka is AJ McGuire, and, wow, does he have stories to tell.

I dig a mob scene as much as the next guy, probably more. Having spent a good chunk of my upbringing out in the woods and in the decidedly roomy American suburbs, there's a certain surreal element to being wrapped up in an absolutely ludicrous number of bodies. You know, like you find on any Osaka street.

However, there comes a time--usually the morning after a particularly savage assault on the liver--when the energy of that buzzing crowd becomes intolerable, and I've got to get the hell away from people. It's not an easy task on such a densely populated island, but it can be done.
