Before You Check In Your Luggage, Pack for a Purpose

There are trips where you overpack and simply can't stuff a single other sock inside your bag, and then there are those trips where it seems like you could smuggle a dog in your luggage with all the extra space. In both instances, indeed before every trip you take, click over to Pack for a Purpose and check if your destination could use your help in delivering items needed by local schools and orphanages.

If you're lucky, you'll be staying at a hotel that actively participates in the Pack for a Purpose program and will make the distribution of anything you manage to bring easy. For example, all Sandals resorts participate as part of their Sandals Foundation, and our booking confirmation even included a small note. Before zipping our luggage closed the night before our flight, we took a trip to Target and access the Pack for a Purpose website on our iPhone, while strolling the aisles. There, we simply clicked on the Caribbean region, found our destination country (Grenada), clicked on our hotel (Sandals LaSource Grenada), viewed the schools the hotel supports and their wish lists, and started shopping.

Before Your Next Trip, Learn to 'Pack for a Purpose'

If you're planning a trip abroad and want to help the community you're visiting without making a binding commitment, Pack for a Purpose has some pointers.

According to the organization's website, sacrificing a small amount of space in your luggage can have a big impact on the communities you visit. For example: with only five pounds' space you can transport 400 pencils, a stethoscope, a blood pressure cuff and 500 band-aids, or 5 deflated soccer balls and an inflation device.
