Don't Be That Guy: Angry Drunk Threatens to Stab British Airways Pilot Mid-Flight

August 26, 2011 at 3:26 PM | by | Comment (1)

As a site that tracks the best in-flight cocktails on a monthly basis, we like to think that our credibility on booze travel is pretty good. While we do occasionally post the random teetotaling dispatch, on the whole you're more likely to find Jaunted posts with phases like "Avion Tequila" and "Eucalyptus Liquor". We are not uninclined toward mixing travel with fine spirits, is what we're saying.

That's why it's so frustrating to have to write about people like this douchebag, who got so drunk he threatened to stab a British Airways pilot with a shard of glass after flight attendants cut him off.

Move Over, Sbarro's; Phoenix Airport Gets New Eats

June 30, 2011 at 1:40 PM | by | Comments (0)

Whether it's awesome sandwiches or the latest frozen food fad we're all over airport dining, so we just had to pass along a few updates about the new eats options that are coming to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in the future. The best part of the new options is that it's just not Sbarro and Starbucks, as some local options are sneaking through the security line; however, no need to worry, as there will still be a Starbucks too.

Last week airport officials did their thing to grant approval to a bunch of new spots for the airport's Terminal 4, and everything should arrive both before and after the TSA checkpoint by sometime between now and 2013. There will be some Phoenix specific pizza from La Grande Orange, and Cowboy Ciao from over in Scottsdale will also be making an appearance in the airport. There will also be a few spots from Fox Restaurant Concepts including Sauce, Blanco's Tacos and Tequilia, and Modern Burger.

Four U.S. Airports Will Wrap Your Holiday Gifts for You

December 20, 2010 at 9:43 AM | by | Comments (0)

When you go holiday shopping, it's a drag to have to turn down the services of the fantastic wrappers at the store. You decline because when you lug those perfectly wrapped presents to the airport, the TSA will just tear it to shreds. Here's an incentive to bring your gifts sans festive paper and bows: A number of airports will wrap them for free once you clear security. It doesn't make up for the full-body scanning, but it's a start.

San Diego International Airport kicks off its free wrapping December 21 to 24 in terminals 1 and 2 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The airport will use wrapping paper designed by students in the New Children's Museum's After School Program.

Feel The Love (and Get Free Stuff) Today at Phoenix's Airport

October 5, 2010 at 8:34 AM | by | Comments (0)

We love visiting airports around the globe, but it’s rare that we truly feel appreciated and loved by the airports back. Well Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is looking to change that, as today is the airport’s second annual Customer Appreciation Day. That’s right—the airport is glad you are visiting the area or just passing through on your way to another destination.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the airport has the authority to hand out free flights; however, they do have some stuff that might just make you feel warm and fuzzy all over. Free candy and popcorn are just some of the freebies that airport personnel will be passing out within the terminals. The airport claims it’s America’s friendliest, so we’re sure there will be plenty of service with a smile.

Dogs Finally Have a Place To Conduct Their Business at Airports

January 26, 2010 at 11:30 AM | by | Comment (1)

Jet-setting pups just got some good news, and this time we don't mean Pet Airways. Dog parks are being set up at airports all over the country. A new mandate by the Department of Transportation requires airlines to set up relief areas for Seeing Eye Dogs and other service animals. Since the mandate went into effect last year, airlines have been working to either add or upgrade dog parks at airports across the U.S.

One such airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport recently opened a 1,000-square-foot dog park on the south end of the ground transportation center. While another, JFK in NYC, has a patch of natural grass (complete with its own fire hydrant) that was installed by American Airlines.

Cops Nab Phoenix Airport Baggage Thief; Is Your Missing Luggage In His House?

November 5, 2009 at 10:34 AM | by | Comments (0)

There are baggage thieves, like these petty fellows, and then there are compulsive baggage thieves, like the couple who were just caught after having stolen 1,000+ checked bags from the carousels at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport.

Keith King and Stacy Legg-King lived in squalor amongst towers of stolen luggage strewn about their suburban home, the ill-gotten goods pinched by Keith straight from the baggage claims of arriving flights. He was spotted three weeks ago when an airport officer noticed King parking at the airport, taking a bag from the carousel, and then putting it in his car and leaving. After this incident, the police put surveillance on him and caught him in the act again this past Monday. And that's when the operation blew wide open...

It’s Thursday, and if you haven’t booked that flight to Tampa, you probably should start making plans to watch the game at home. If you’re a Cardinals fan and are based in the Grand Canyon State, we've got your picks on where to head for the big game. Of course, you could always stay at home, but you’ll need someone else to high-five besides your dog.

We've been getting lots of mail on our tipline lately about our Airport WiFi Map. We read it all, and we appreciate it!

Your notes have given us even more places to add to our mashup, which is already stocked with dozens of airports worldwide that have free wireless. (We don't roll with airports that charge!)

Airport WiFi: Phoenix Plays Net Nanny

April 16, 2008 at 2:30 PM | by | Comment (1)

Say it ain't so, PHX! The Phoenix airport, which we listed as one of the best in the US for WiFi, won't let you check out dirty websites while you're waiting for your flight. The airport filters web content in the terminals, a la Denver International.

Says The Rocky Mountain News, it's only one of a couple airports playing nanny for passengers:

A review of policies at two dozen of the nation's busiest airports found that DIA and Phoenix Sky Harbor are the only two that block content on their WiFi systems for travelers using their own laptops, according to [our] research.

As we told the author of the story, it's pretty ridiculous that the web is being censored while you can pick up nudie mags in the airport newsstand. (Though DIA should get some credit for making the WiFi free.) For more airports with free wireless, check out our handy map.

Best US Airports for WiFi

October 24, 2007 at 11:06 AM | by | Comments (8)

Contribute your airport wireless report by leaving it in comments, uploading your airport photo to Jaunted Flickr Photo Pool, or via email, and we will add it to our U.S. Airport Wireless map.

In this summer-turned-fall of airport delays, one thing can help turn a trip from maddening hassle to sufferable necessity: Airport WiFi. If you're going to get stuck in a terminal far from home and far from where you're going, at least you can get online and get some work done (or update your Facebook page). At least, that's our dream.

Some airports claim free WiFi, but it is super tempermental and only exists in one terminal (JFK we are looking at you), some airports hang "We Have WiFi" banners throughout the terminals but in reality they offer a couple hours of access for $9.99, and worst of all, if you are hoping to gain coveted access to a sparse power outlet, they make you sit your ass on the, cold, hard, unforgiving airport floor while you access the web.

Lots of airports still don't even offer WiFi to travelers passing through, and we can't figure out why. In our view, it's another utility that should be provided for free, just like bathrooms and A/C. And more importantly, we find that an airport with reliable, free WiFi gets us planning our trip around such signal-strong airports.

But there's hope. Some large US airports are leading the way, while the real innovation is going on at the country's small airfields. Maybe it's due to less red tape, or maybe they just want to get noticed, but regional and less-used airports usually have the best WiFi.

After the jump we name the Best US airports for WiFi.
