Teen Unlocks Most Challenging Foursquare Badge Ever at North Pole

Parker Liautaud, a California-born teen who of course attends England's elite Eton school, today became one of the youngest explorers to ever ski to the North Pole. His expedition, which is being sponsored in part by General Electric, is explicitly designed to leverage social media and raise awareness about environmental destruction. He's got the requisite Facebook page and—because this is the world we live in—he intends to check in on Foursquare once he gets to his destination. The accomplishment will net him a vaunted Last Degree badge, which Foursquare probably figured would go unclaimed at least a bit longer.

Three Poles in 365 Days: Polar Explorer Plans Chilly Trip for Global Warming Awareness

A polar explorer named Eric Larsen is about to embark on an ambitious adventure that will bring him to the North Pole, South Pole, and summit of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain, all within 365 days. The Save the Poles Expedition, as he's calling it, is designed to bring awareness to the problem of global warming by traveling to the most notorious frozen places on earth, reporting the latest climate data, and using the platform to advocate strategies for reducing carbon emissions.
