Neighborhoods To Know And Go: NYC's Astoria
Of the five boroughs of New York City, Manhattan is obviously the most visited, most well-known, but whether or not tourists realize it, they actually set foot in another borough first. This is Queens, otherwise recognized as the home of both LaGuardia and JFK airports, but it's a whole area simply packed with unique neighborhoods and small, family businesses, all the things that visitors expect from Manhattan but no longer find.
We focus in particular on the Astoria section of Queens, between the East River and LaGuardia, a neighborhood thatlike the typical idea of NYflourishes with immigrant populations ranging from Greek to Arab and everything in between. In addition, it's ever so slowly becoming the new Brooklyn, as more Midtown professionals and creatives make their homes here after being priced out of both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Indeed we find ourselves coming here more and more often, in quest of the best Greek souvlaki and views of the city.
Join us in Astoria, after the jump.

New Niagara Airport Has Free WiFi But No Flights
If Pam and Jim’s wedding on The Office got you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, then a new airport wants to help you experience Niagara Falls for all its worth. The Niagara Falls International Airport is almost ready to go as the finishing touches are being completed on the almost $32 million terminal. The place is more than ready for visitors to arrive as the runway and jet bridge are designed to easily accommodate a Boeing 747—too bad there’s none scheduled to land anytime soon.
The new airport has some of our favorite airport amenities, including free WiFi. However, the best thing going for it is totally free airport parking. You’re welcome to swing your vehicle right up to the front of the airport without the need for any parking ticket, but if you’ve got a big SUV, you will need to use the adjoining lot because you’re just too darn big for the prime parking spots. There’s one problem with the new airport: there won’t be too many daily flights once it officially opens on December 11.

Entering Musical Bohemia With Franco Battiato At NYC's Le Poisson Rouge
More than a music venue and beyond an art space, NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge is a self-proclaimed “creative asylum,” and its historic address (the site of the legendary Village Gate) is an inviting refuge from Bleecker Street’s rowdy, pub-crawling NYU crowd.
This week, we stopped by hereone of our "Best Live New Music Venues"for a performance by Italian musician Franco Battiato. But the experience is so much more than just him; it's the entire venue. You'll see why...

Celebs Want You To Participate in Voluntourism With Them This Week
If you've watched any network TV this week you may have felt the sudden urge to do good. That's because the networks have teamed up with iParticipatean industry-wide initiative aimed at urging viewers to participate in volunteerismto include story lines that spotlight community service. That's also why the photo shoot on last week's Ugly Betty had a Nothing But Net theme and why Kenneth the page is going to try to adopt all of the dogs at a local shelter on Thursday's night's episode of 30 Rock. Not only will your favorite shows have a "do good" theme but the commercials will too. Several A-Listers, like Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew Mcconaughey, have taped ads for iParticpate reminding us that by helping others, we help ourselves.
But the Entertainment Industry Foundation, who is spearheading the initiative, isn't just spreading the message through TV, they have also scheduled several star-studded events this week to encourage people to get involved in their community. For instance, today, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba will donate her time along with more than 50 volunteers for a day of service at the Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas beginning at 10:30 AM.

NYC Will Become Deadhead Mecca In March For Grateful Dead Exhibit
Deadheads, book your New York City vacation now, as the New York Historical Society has announced that in March 2010, they will mount an exhibition of the Grateful Dead Archive. It will be the largest exhibition of its kind ever, and is sure to have fans breaking out their Jerry Garcia-brand ties for the occasion.
According to the official description, "Grateful Dead: Now Playing at The New York Historical Society", as the exhibitions is called, "will chronicle the history of the Grateful Dead, its music, and phenomenal longevity through an array of original art and documents related to the band, its members, performances, and productions." If you've been a hardcore fan for years, be sure to look closely at the piles of fan mail that will be exhibited, just in case you ever wondered why Phil Lesh never responded to your sincere letter asking him to play at your prom.

New York State Welcomes The World's Longest Pedestrian Bridge
If you need somewhere to take in the sights of autumn this weekend, then you should consider New York’s newest state park. After rotting away for decades above the Hudson River, the Poughkeepsie Bridge has been reborn. Thanks to the time and deep pockets of local businesses, investors, and dedicated volunteers, the old railroad bridge that connects Poughkeepsie with Highland reopened earlier this month to traffic. The bridge has been transformed into a 1.25-mile pedestrian bridge—that’s two and a half miles roundtrip for the mathematically challenged.
The Walkway Over The Hudson is now the longest pedestrian bridge in the world, and it is certainly something for the Hudson Valley to get excited about. The walkway is totally free and visitors are encouraged to check out the view as it crosses the water about 200 feet in the air. Bicyclists, walkers, runners, and even the eight people that still rollerblade are welcome to take a trip across the Hudson. No need to worry about things being too crowded, the bridge is over 30 feet wide as it crosses the river, so you’ll have plenty of room to set up for some photo opportunities.

Pams And Jims Have Been Coming To Niagara Falls For Years
Last week's episode of "The Office" featured two timeless romances: the marriage of Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly (played by John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer), and the long infatuation between tourists and Niagara Falls. Pam mentioned in an earlier episode that she and Jim picked the border city because of its distance from Scranton -- which didn't deter their coworker from attending as she'd hopedbut the city's history as a tourist destination dates back to the 18th century.
Visits to the geological wonder picked up after the Civil War when railroad officials capitalized on it as a destination. Back in the day, couples didn't come to (spoiler!) get married on the Maid of the Mist boat ride; they enjoyed it on their honeymoon. While still several days' journey from many East Coast cities, the falls allowed newlyweds -- from the upper classes first, but later middle and working-class spouses tooto get away and enjoy each other's company, sort of like a latter day Hawaii. Its attractions changed with the times: After World War I, motels sprung up so couples could take their cars on vacation with them.

American Airlines And NYC Cozy Up To Lure Visitors Into Town
Tourism is down all over the globe, but New York City isn’t just going to sit back and take it. They’re fighting to gain back some of the visitors they’ve lost, and to turn around numbers that are down five percent compared to last year. Therefore, teaming up with American Airlines is a good way to start.
NYC and Company has partnered with the airline to offer special deals for its new target markets. Visitors from Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles, among others, all had the chance at special round trip fares through last Friday. Nothing was a crazy deal, but at least they were trying their best by offering fares between about $140 and $220.

Robert Pattinson Takes Manhattan (And Girls Try to Take a Piece of Him)

Robert Pattinson began shooting his latest movie, Remember Me, in New York City this week. His character in the movie, Tyler Roth, is a young man whose family is torn apart by his brother's recent suicide. It's not exactly an uplifting summer blockbuster but it might give him some street cred with critics who were less than impressed with his work in Twilight.
Naturally, he still can't escape the Tween Twilighters and Pattinson caused quite a stir when he filmed exterior shots in Washington Square Park on Monday. Over 200 girls lined the perimeter of the park watching him film and as he emerged onto the street once the shoot was over they descended on him, pulling at his clothes, screaming his name and literally, throwing themselves on him.

Kitsch Factor Better Than Food At Trailer Park Lounge
The tacky bar has been raised. We'd thought we'd seen it all, and then someone asked us if we'd ever been to the Trailer Park Lounge, New York's only (so far as we know) white-trash-themed eatery. Hey, this is the flyover-state mocking establishment with which conservatives claim NYC is rife! The Fox News Channel's heads are going to explode when they discover this place.
Trailer park decor as explored in this Chelsea restaurant includes '70s country music records, lawn chairs, Elvis impersonator headshots and lots of flickering neon. Stocking this place with mismatched chairs and old diner booths must have made some antique hunter weep with outrage as they bypassed items with taste. Like most places in the neighborhood, it's small -- only about 10 tables, plus the tacky tiki bar selling drinks called "Paradise Hawaiian Style" and "Jim Bob's I.Q."

This Post Has Nothing to Do with A Streetcar Named Desire

Are you into rooftop views of New York City while taking in world class art? Us too. That's why now's the time to get to The Met: Frank Stella's sculptures recently took up residence on the museum's roof.
Huge pieces, made from steel and carbon fiber, Stella's sculptures aren't easy to get a handle on, but as long as you're drinking in the skyline, you might as well ponder the meaning of it all. Besides, The Met is branching out with this one--though Stella has long been an established artist, the uptown museum sometimes has trouble dealing with contemporary art. If The Met can do it, so can you.
But if PoMo architectural sculptures aren't your thing, don't despair. Another show might strike your fancy, but you'll need to act fast. Barcelona and Modernity: Gaudi to Dali--featuring tons of furniture and modern and surrealist paintings--closes this Sunday, June 3.
