Skip 'New Year's Eve' in Theaters for the Real Thing in Times Square Instead
The movie New Year's Eve is kind of a bore as it follows a bunch of big name actors through convoluted story lines that all come together around midnight. But for all the plot lacks, it does do a good job of conveying the mood of Times Square on New Year's Eve (or at least what we all fantasize the mood to be).
Capturing New Year's Eve in NYC was no small task for director Garry Marshall. Part of the movie New Year's Eve was actually filmed on location in Times Square on New Year's Eve 2011. Then, in February, they had to recreate the ball drop with thousands of extras to get a few additional shots.

Three Huge State Fairs Happening Over Labor Day Weekend
State Fair season is now upon us, and that means that fried everything is probably only a short ride away from where you call home. Some states have already done their thing while others are still busy planning events for later this year, but there are several states getting ready to go for Labor Day Weekend. If you’re looking to overindulge on rides, foods, and fun here’s a couple spots to do it during the holiday weekend:
· Minnesota State Fair:
The Land of 10,000 Lakes has been holding state fairs since 1859, so it’s pretty clear that Minnesota is good at doing the fair thing. This year’s events start today and run through September 5 in Saint Paul. Tickets to the festivities are usually $12 for adults and $10 for the little ones, but there are a few days where you might be able to save a few bucks on admission.
Interactive guides in the form of the Food Finder and Fun Finder are available to help you plan your visit, so if you’re looking for that special food vendor—there’s over 300—or something fun to do they’ve got you covered. Of course there’s even iPhone and Android apps as well, so you can take your map to go when you hit the fairgrounds. There’s plenty of free entertainment too, but if you want to upgrade to a Grandstand show we’re recommending Weezer on September 3—$35—or Train and Maroon 5 on September 5—$37.

Freedom Tower Finally Towering Over World Trade Center Site

Freedom Tower (left, under construction), as seen from 5th floor of the W Downtown
It's 75 degrees outside right now in New York City, and though it's technically still spring, the summer tourist season is ramping up. As usual, visitors will be making the rounds of the Empire State Building, Macy's Herald Square, Central Park, Apple 5th Avenue and the World Trade Center site, but unlike in recent years, there's actually something to see now at Ground Zero.
That's right; Freedom Tower is making serious headway.

Take a 'Vegcation' at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary This Spring
We've all heard of staycationers or voluntourists, but "vegcationers?" Compassion Over Killing and Green Earth Travel are hoping vegcations become the next hot trend in travel thanks to the vegan-friendly "vegcation" destination weekend they have planned this spring.
The two groups have organized a weekend getaway on May 19-23, 2011 which will begin at the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in upstate New York, where volunteers will spend two days helping to groom, feed, and socialize with the farm's rescued cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats & sheep. They will also be served homemade vegan meals throughout their stay.

Jon Hamm Hits the Slopes with Megan Fox in Upstate New York
Yesterday, Megan Fox and Jon Hamm hit the slopes together at the Mt. Peter Ski Resort in Warwick, New York. The pair wasn't there just for fun however; they were actually filming a scene for their upcoming movie Friends With Kids, which is being directed by Jon's girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt.
Jon and Megan didn't do much actual skiing, but they did appear to be having fun while starting a snowball fight for one scene. Megan looked like a pro on the snowboard too, even if she didn't go very far on it.

Celebs Celebrate Valentine's Day with Flowers, Dinner, and Trips to St. Barts
Stars really are just like us, at least when it comes to Valentine's Day. Most celebs spent yesterday buying candies, cookies, flowers and fancy dinners for their significant others, just like we did.
David Beckham proved he's no cheapskate last night when he treated his wife, Victoria Beckham, to dinner at New York City's Minetta Tavern. The restaurant features signature dishes like Veal "Porterhouse" Chop, Bone-In New York Strip, and Filet Mignon au Roquefort ranging in price from $40 - $52 a plate.

Three of the Best US Cities for Welcoming the Chinese New Year
Despite what the traditional calendar says, the New Year is actually still a few weeks away. So we say put off the resolutions a little longer and prepare for Chinese Lunar New Year on February 3. There’s probably a celebration or parade near your hometown, but if you’re looking for the best, check out our three picks:
· New York City:
Welcome the year of the rabbit in Chinatown's Sara D. Roosevelt Park on February 3 between 11am and around 3:30pm as the locals will set off plenty of firecrackers and other things that go boom and pow to ward off evil spirits. Besides the fireworks there will be plenty of dancers, performers, and other cultural events to get you in the mood to celebrate—and you might even learn a thing or two.
The party continues through the weekend when the parade hits the streets on February 6. Expect crazy awesome floats, marching bands, more fireworks, and plenty of lions and dragons winding their way up and down the city streets. Organizers expect at least 5,000 people to march in the parade, so the spectators are probably way more than that—so get there early!

UK Politicians Threaten Massive Fines Against Airports Because of...um...Bad Weather

If you're looking for further verification of our "wow, the Brits are kind of whiny about air travel aren't they" thesis from last week, you need search no further than the Twitter feed of the Economist's New York bureau chief Matthew Bishop. The largest city in the United States was functionally shut down to air travel for a day and what's the biggest new media travel story about JFK? How much Bishop complained when he got stuck on the tarmac for seven hours.
And while that would drive us insane too, you'd think that there would have been at least one prominent New Yorker who complained more than a random British guy, or someone from that Cathay Pacific flight that was stuck on the tarmac for ten hours. Apparently not.
More evidence: in order to placate the (barely) metaphorical mobs of pitchfork wielding Londoners, the British government is coming down hard on Heathrow and other airports. UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond is threatening massive fines forand we're going to quote the Daily Mail directly, the better to give you a sense of the British mood"inflicting misery on passengers."

Snowpocalypse! East Coast Blizzard Causes Epic Shutdown

We thought Midwest (not to mention UK) air traffic two weeks ago was a total mess, and that things couldn't get much worse. Turns out we called that putt a little too early. If you're reading this right now, you're not suffering power outages like the 60,000 people in Massachusetts or the 16,000 people in New York or the 2,300 people in Rhode Island or the 40,000 people in Canada. So congratulations on that we suppose.
You're also not reading this from a New York airport, since those have been shut since last night. JFK, EWR, and LGA aren't projected to reopen until 4pm EST today, at which point they will have been offline for about about 24 hours each. That shouldn't be a problem, since it's not like a lot of people live in that region or like this was a weekend where lots of people were vacationing.
Ditto for the wave of airport cancellations that hit all three DC airports, plus Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, etc etc. Amtrak between New York and Boston is also shut down, so if you were desperately hoping to get to Logan and take the train into New Yorkwhich you probably couldn't do anywaythat won't work either.
