Take A Trip On the Pelham 1 2 3, Or Do Everything But
Today marks the nationwide release of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. This remake of the 1970’s classic stars Denzel Washington as a New York City subway dispatcher who finds himself up against a bitter ex-con (John Travolta) that hijacks one of the trains. The movie takes place and was filmed primarily within the NYC subway system, giving the rest of the world a look at the underbelly of New York City. Here’s a guide to getting on the subway and where to go when you get off.
Where to Eat:
One of the film’s most prominent locations is Grand Central Terminal, no big surprise since the movie is about the city's underground transportation. Yet the dining options at Grand Central are quite refined. Grand Central has a huge selection of restaurants and nearly every table offers a perfect view for people watching. From the upscale Cipriani Dolci to an array of delis and coffee shops, there’s also something for every budget.

NYC Bus and Subway Rides Now Cost $2.25 Each Time You Swipe

You better bring a little extra spending dough when you come to New York this summer. After months of speculation, the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority has bumped up the price of a one-way bus and subway fare from $2 to $2.25. This is less than the initial proposal of $2.50 but still crappy all the same.
The new prices go into effect on June 28. And it's not just mass transportation that will be affected. There will also be a taxi surcharge increase of 50 cents.
Fortunately, one hotel is trying to take the sting out of the fare hike. The Wyndham Garden Hotel Manhattan Chelsea, a new property which just opened last fall, is offering guests who stay a minimum of two nights a complimentary one-day MetroCard and customized step-by-step (literally) subway and bus directions from HopStop.com. Although we suggest practicing your passback with your hotel roomie before you hit up the subway turnstiles, just so you aren't in our way when we're coming through.
Rates at the hotel start at $189 a night. Use the promo rate plan "SUBWAY" to book online.

Jack Bauer Will Save NYC in Season Eight
After six days in Los Angeles and a day in D.C., Jack Bauer will be spending Day 8 in the Big Apple. EW broke the news last week that "24"’s eighth season will take place in New York City. Despite the fact that the show will be set in NYC, most of the episodes will still be shot in Los Angeles with a few exterior scenes filmed in New York City beginning next month.
Even though they haven’t started shooting "24" yet, Kiefer Sutherland is already in New York filming “Twelve” with Chace Crawford. The movie is an adaptation of Nick McDonnell’s novel about a Manhattan high school dropout-turned-drug dealer, whose cousin is brutally murdered and his best friend is arrested for the crime. Is anyone else noticing a pattern? It seems Kiefer is drawn to projects that have numbers in the title.

How To Volunteer For The Tribeca Film Festival

Jaunted contributing editor Christine M. Bord has a passion for movies and for volunteer travel. Here's her experience of combining both.
Volunteer vacations don’t have to be about saving wildlife or building houses. Most film festivals also need volunteers to make sure their events go off without a hitch. There are usually pretty good perks too. Like free movie tickets, swag, food and the opportunity to meet people with shared interests.
Two years ago, my boyfriend and I took a weekend getaway to the Big Apple and worked as volunteers for the Tribeca Film Festival. The volunteer coordinator was kind enough to schedule our boyfriend and us for the same shifts in the same theater. We took tickets, answered questions and worked the concessions stand at Tribeca Cinemas, a cool gallery, theater and event space on Varick Street. Our daily shifts only lasted about four hours giving us plenty of time to enjoy everything else the city had to offer.

New York City Wants Tourists to Touch Their Technology
What is New York City to its tourists but a loud, crass and hectic metropolis centered around areas like Times Square and Fifth Avenue, places that only further the frenetic mood. Seeking to counter this as well as bolster their own resources, the tourist board opened the starkly fresh "Official NYC Information Center" in Midtown this January.
Nestled into a storefront on Seventh Avenue between 53rd and 52nd Streets, the friendly space designed by WXY Architecture is packed to the gills with user-friendly technology. It's pretty much a confused tourist's dream, with touch-screen map tables which can help you to create personalized city itineraries, along with the ability to browse free events and NYC Visit's "Just Ask the Locals" feature.

Neo Con New York Opening in Brooklyn
This weekend, New York City street art takes center stage at the 17 Frost Gallery in Williamsburg. The Neo-Con Collective, made up of renown street artists Aakash Nihalani, Ellis G., and Poster Boy, has created an exhibition of collaborative installations for the gallery that will open Saturday.
17 Forest has praised the artists for their innovative and thought provoking work.
The collective consists of artists that utilize ephemeral mediums to create public art, focusing on neo-contextualizing the mundane. Their works, on and off the street, possess urgent relevance to modern societal contradictions and conflagrations, confronting the humanness of discomfort and dissatisfaction with typical, routine, existence.

Canceled 'Mars' Still Filming in NYC

Even though Life on Mars, the ABC series about a detective who is hit by a car and wakes up in 1973, was recently canceled, they are still filming the series’ final episodes in and around NYC. Today, they are at City Island Yacht Club in City Island.
City Island, located just off of the Bronx, is one of New York’s best-kept secrets, a real taste of New England in the middle of the Big Apple. The island has one main street, the aptly named City Island Ave, which stretches its entire length, a whopping 1.5 miles, and is lined with seafood restaurants, antique shops, and corner stores. The primarily residential side streets that jut off of City Island Ave terminate at beaches, most of which are locked and gated.

MoMA's New Lush, Splendid Installation Wants You To Relax
Anyone who's been to a walking-intensive city like New York eventually hits the dreaded late-afternoon slump: You're dying to put your feet up somewhere, but driven to fit in just... one... more... activity. And at this time of year, crashing on a bench in Central Park is not an attractive option! So immerse yourself in MoMA's latest, stunning video installation, Pipilotti Rist: Pour Your Body Out (7354 Meters) (through Feb. 2).
Swiss artist Rist creates bright, almost oversaturated videos often incorporating music -- some of her best known works were created while she was a member of a klezmer-punk band. MoMA's second floor open space (reaching up to the 5th story) has been converted into a "gallery" for "Pour Your Body Out," complete with soft carpeting and a giant donut-shaped couch where visitors are encouraged to kick off their shoes and get comfy. When we visited we saw several parents with little kids completely captivated by the views of fruit, flowers and open water in the video (although, full disclosure, there is some nudity in there too).
You'll feel so rested after 20 minutes watching the walls, you'll want to tackle the rest of the museum. MoMA admission is a bit pricey at $20, though it's free on Friday nights from 4 to 8PM (but expect long lines). If you want to stay in midtown, try the combo MoMA/ Top of the Rock ticket for $30.
